This thesis focuses on analyses of the long distance telecom service industry in US market by a system dynamics model to analyze bubble effects. The bubble effects have not been fully analyzed from the structural perspectives, although a lot of articles and papers partially explain the bubble effect. In this thesis, the system dynamics model of capacity expansion process, pricing, demand, cost, and decision making for new fiber installation is constructed by investigating the industrial structure. The model was analyzed, key factors for the bubble were identified, and their impact on the dynamics was captured. Through the analysis, I found that the fiber glut occurred by the fact that a temporal demand soar induced by the emergence of the Internet technologies leaded the telecom service providers to estimate the future demand wrongly, and the error was amplified by the long planning horizon which is economically plausible policy for each provider. I also found that the revenue reduced in the late stage of the bubble since the competitiveness in the industry stimulated price war.; by Rintaro Kurebayashi.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 94-95).

Knowledge networks have received a significant amount of attention in the past few decades as people look beyond corporate governance and resource-based approaches to uncover sources of competitive advantage. While this area of research is useful for organizations in general, it is especially pertinent to R&D organizations where knowledge flow is the critical enabler for breakthrough innovation. The proposed thesis will examine the drivers of knowledge flow and how it impacts the performance of Functional Centers and its subunits. The core of this research focuses on a medium-sized R&D firm in Singapore. This work is divided into the following steps: Develop a structured interview for gathering ideas from senior managers, Create and execute a survey to assess the knowledge network, Process and analyze the results This thesis will investigate the following questions: What are the various approaches people use to form their working networks and which approaches generate the most contacts and which methods generate the most useful contacts. Does strong intra-center/subunit connectivity negatively impact inter-center/subunit connectivity with people from other groups? How does the presence of people with strong networks within the centers affect the performance of the group? Do the managers of these people recognize their value/contribution and how does it affect the usefulness of these connectors? How does the duration of a bond between two people affect the quality of its social and work-related interactions? How does the willingness to build cross-level bonds (managers and junior engineers) impact the performance and efficacy of managers hence their workgroups?; by Liew Kou-Yew.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

The tanker industry covers all business related with trading tankers in which there are many participants: vessel owners, charterers, shipbuilders, scrappers, consultants, capitalists, brokers, insurers, surveyors, agents, repairing shops, manning companies, and vendors etc. The industry exhibits the characteristics of commoditization driven by price. As the industry is significantly affected by the chartering market, I will herein focus on the chartering market and its movements, in order to better understand the industry. The structure of the market creates recurring cycles and instability. Also, the key elements affecting this market are highly interrelated. Characteristically, long delays of these key elements make the market more uncertain and more volatile. The purpose of this thesis is to study the dynamic of the oil tanker industry, in particular chartering market, using system dynamics methodology. A simulation model will illuminate the following:* Driving forces on the commoditized industry, Nature of the dynamics and structural behaviorsm, Effects of key elements on freight rates; by TaeSoo Lee.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 112-113).

This thesis explores the factors contributing to the successes and failures of internal corporate ventures. There are many large companies today using internal corporate ventures as a way to develop new businesses and products while creating potential growth for the parent company. Large companies believe that they can create these new businesses by combining the agility of a small startup with the corporate resources of the large firm. However, economic pressures, corporate bureaucracy, and lack of entrepreneurial experience can significantly affect the performance of these ventures. By creating an internal venture organization the corporation hopes to protect the new startup ideas from corporate interference. By reviewing past research and interviewing individuals from companies currently having some success in internal corporate venturing, this thesis hopes to show what factors positively and negatively affect the success of internal ventures. Additionally, differences between the literature and the interviews will be identified as potential future research topics. By understanding what factors can affect an internal venture; companies may be able to help prevent venture failure in the future.; by Simon Dodd.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

Banking channel management has become a crucial component in the drive for improved efficiency. Since the channel is the interlocutor between customers and products, banks are leveraging their knowledge of channels to efficiently address perfect product portfolio through the most cost-effective and profitable channel. This thesis describes some ideas currently influencing banking channel management strategy and how banks can manage and take advantage of these factors through focusing on efficiency, customer segmentation and channel interaction versus cost structure. It first provides a global perspective of the banking industry through a survey of four regions and countries, and then reviews current trends and strategies applied by banks and consulting firms. On this foundation, it makes recommendations as to how the industry can best adapt to changes in banking channel management in order to remain competitive and efficient.; by Renato Teixeira Catalan.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 112-115).

With the dawning of the digital era, many home electronic products are emerging. One of the fastest growing and most wide-spread products in the market is the DVD player. Few digital products have achieved as fast a market penetration, and with as rapid a price drop, as the DVD player. This thesis touches on the product development strategy for my company, LG Electronics, in terms of short-range and mid (long)-range plan, specifically on means to sustain and keep the profit margin reasonable in spite of the current competitive market situation. The system dynamics tool is used as a method of analysis and assessment on the current DVD player market situation. Based on the results of the analysis, I propose the following strategies, in terms of products and technologies, for LG Electronics to maintain sustainable growth in the industry. Firstly, in terms of mid-range plan, the company should broaden its DVD product scope and make profit by adding value. Secondly, in terms of long-range plan, the company should draw a big picture for further growth by taking into account the development of new disruptive technologies and products in the industry.; by Sung Hwan Kim.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management...

With the increase in strategic alliances and acquisitions, the firm needs to be studied in the context of the network of relationships in which it is embedded. This network not only extends the capabilities of the firm by establishing channels to access additional resources but it also creates additional constraints that have to be accounted for. This fundamental view is the backdrop of this research on the dynamics of the diagnostic medical imaging industry. This thesis explores a variety of network-based approaches to characterize the dynamics of the medical imaging industry. After reviewing the literature on the subject of alliances and inter-organizational networks, we describe the medical imaging industry in the United States. For our analysis, we have compiled a list of alliances and acquisitions launched in the last 15 years and used that list to create an overall network for the industry where each node is an industry subgroup. Along with the visual representation, we have compiled a number of network-based statistics such as distribution of sub-industry membership and centrality. We have examined the trends of those metrics in three time periods, 1980-1989, 1990-1999, and 2000-2003 and related those trends to the information gathered through several interviews with industry experts. Those trends are consistent with the consolidation that has taken place in the industry in the last 10 years. However they also show the emergence of new centers of activity such as the medical services industry segment. Overall...

In order to survive, the steel industry has undergone traumatic changes in the last years. A thirty years old overcapacity combined with a slow growing market led to a steadily eroding profitability of steel companies, particularly in developed economies. These factors determined an industry profile delineated by a relentless quest for cost cutting and efficient operations. Regarding innovation, the approach of the steel industry has been reactive, basically following market requirements. The industry has historically found itself far from its customers businesses and has struggled to find innovative products and services that could meet an unperceived or unarticulated need so as to propose higher value and grow its market. Two important customers of the steel industry are the oil and gas and the automotive industries, two mature businesses as well. Even when changes in these two steel users have also been relatively slow, the more recent technological trends analyzed in this work suggest an upcoming faster pace of change. This thesis examines these recent technological trends in the oil and gas and automotive industries with regards to the potential impact in the steel industry. Some of the technological gaps that might be encountered in those trends are visited...

High-performance teams can be used to achieve strategic high pay-offs for an organization. The aim of this paper is to study fundamentals key to the success of high performance teams and to examine the application of these fundamentals in an inherently multicultural international organization, such as the United Nations. The approach is to first review and to discuss relevant articles of work on high performance teams. As far as is possible, the most updated papers and books with a strong focus on both theory-driven approach and research, and which make good use of case studies with ample examples and illustrations are used. The output is the derivation of perspectives and frameworks which will then be used as guides to understanding the case for the United Nations. Following an overview of the United Nations history and current operations, a series of interviews with its key individuals is then conducted, with the aim to learning and making credible hypotheses and meaningful analysis. Towards this end, a good representation across the UN agencies is sought to ensure the necessary depth and breadth. The paper then considers what lies in the way ahead and finally concludes with recommendations for the United Nations and relevant key lessons learnt for the Civil Service of Singapore.; by Tan Wee Beng.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

For firms entering new markets there are numerous variables impacting the focus and the scope of the new venture. For foreign companies entering the US biotech space this is even more so. Getting early relevant data is critical towards mission critical decisions and tactics. The firm in focus, Axis Shield, is launching a new point of care device to attract practitioners all over the US. They have been meticulous in getting secondhand data from various surveys and research reports. The focus of this thesis is to assist them in their primary data gathering testing assumptions and dimensions carved out to be instrumental for commercial success. Thus, the main thesis focus is concerned with the identification, structuring, collecting and analysis of these primary data. The company will eventually use both the second hand and the primary data to complete their overall market analysis. Hence, the market survey will give the firm valuable data on which to base their US launch in 2004. Finally, the thesis will give personal insights regarding the complexity of planning and carrying out a marketing study for novel products in an inaccessible market.; by Jone Smedsvig.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management...

The banking industry is known to have certainty only about uncertainty, change is only constant in adopting the technologies for developing innovative products and services, and yet the opportunities of arbitrage are everywhere including in economical settings and business strategies. The retail banking industry will be analyzed to understand why some banks make sustainable profits while others are less successful. We will analyze what business strategies would best work for such dynamic industry even as banking appears to be a commodity business. A systematic study will be set out to model the dynamics of different positioning of Delta Model and the effect of the underlying interactions. We will walk through the analysis of why the innovation along with the customer targeting and the operational effectiveness are crucial to implement the right business strategies. We also study banking case studies relevant to the business strategies. Finally, we present the conclusions with some recommendations in order for banks to thrive in the industry for years to come during both war times and peace times.; by Harry Reddy.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program...

The costs to produce and utilize hydrogen are extremely high per unit of energy when compared to fossil fuel energy sources such as natural gas or gasoline. The cheapest hydrogen production approaches today are also the most polluting, as they use fossil fuels in even more inefficient ways than cars do. Renewable approaches to hydrogen production are- at best- three times more expensive per unit energy than the cost to produce the same amount of natural gas. The production of hydrogen through biological systems is one area of particularly promising research. There are countless biological systems that produce energy from sunlight, and countless others that produce energy from the metabolism of organic molecules such as glucose. Many microbial organisms produce hydrogen under certain conditions. Optimizing their innate ability to produce hydrogen and developing biohydrogen plants whose economics compete with current commercial plants are key hurdles that must be overcome. Economic models for the production of hydrogen through biological systems are examined in detail in this thesis. The key technical hurdles which drive the capital and production costs are identified. Fruitful areas of potential research are suggested to bring biological hydrogen production to commercial scale as rapidly as possible.; by Richard J. Databases and analysis tools currently being used to study carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) options are managed by diverse organizations and are heterogeneous in format. Tools to study the various components of a CCS system have been developed in several fields including chemistry, geology, and economics. Data being used to run analyses are being obtained from an equally diverse set of organizations, from data collected for environmental assessments to data on oil and gas exploration. These variations in tools and data cause complications in systems-level analyses, resulting in additional effort expended in data collection and opportunities for human error. A geographic information system has been implemented to automate and support robust studies of both component and system options. Context management and information integration techniques have been designed into the system. The system improves the availability and quality of information by automatically managing the distributed and heterogeneous data sources. The resulting information is being used to advance research and development of CCS systems through efforts such as the NETL sponsored Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships. This paper will present an overview of the system and initial results of its application to CCS-related data.; by David Su-Kai Cheng.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...
