Common bean is a staple food of great economic and social importance and breeding programs are being carried out in different institutions in Brazil and abroad. Aiming to determine how many new cultivars were presented in the journal CBAB - Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology and which breeding methods were used to develop the new genotypes, a historical survey of CBAB from 2001 to 2008 was carried out. During this period, 23 new common bean cultivars were described in CBAB, of which all but two that were bred at universities had been developed by public research institutes. The most commonly used breeding method was the pedigree, followed by bulk and the single pod descent (SPD) method. Since the preference of Brazilian consumers for carioca and black grain beans is noticeable, most bean breeders in the country have focused their research on these two bean types.

Cyanobacteria can function as solar-driven biofactories thanks to their ability to perform photosynthesis and the ease with which they are genetically modified. In this review, we discuss transcriptional parts and promoters available for engineering cyanobacteria. First, we go through special cyanobacterial characteristics that may impact engineering, including the unusual cyanobacterial RNA polymerase, sigma factors and promoter types, mRNA stability, circadian rhythm, and gene dosage effects. Then, we continue with discussing component characteristics that are desirable for synthetic biology approaches, including decoupling, modularity, and orthogonality. We then summarize and discuss the latest promoters for use in cyanobacteria regarding characteristics such as regulation, strength, and dynamic range and suggest potential uses. Finally, we provide an outlook and suggest future developments that would advance the field and accelerate the use of cyanobacteria for renewable biotechnology.

The first part of this thesis studied the capacity of amino acids and enzymes to catalyze the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane and phenyltrimethoxysilane. Selected amino acids were shown to accelerate the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane under ambient temperature, pressure and at neutral pH (pH 7±0.02). The nature of the side chain of the amino acid was important in promoting hydrolysis and condensation. Several proteases were shown to have a capacity to hydrolyze tri- and tet-ra- alkoxysilanes under the same mild reaction conditions. The second part of this thesis employed an immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (Novozym-435, N435) to produce siloxane-containing polyesters, polyamides, and polyester amides under solvent-free conditions. Enzymatic activity was shown to be temperature dependent, increasing until enzyme denaturation became the dominant pro-cess, which typically occurred between 120-130ᵒC. The residual activity of N435 was, on average, greater than 90%, when used in the synthesis of disiloxane-containing polyesters, regardless of the polymerization temperature except at the very highest temperatures, 140-150ᵒC. The business model (BM) concept is a relatively new subject of academic research, though the term has been used extensively by practitioners. Even with the rapid growth of publications in this area, there remains a vague boundary around the topic and no universally accepted classification. Large scale empirical research on the relative effectiveness of different models is at the infancy stage. This study follows the integrative theoretical approach suggested by Amit and Zott [1] and the empirical approach adopted in Zott and Amit [2] and Malone et al [3]. We replicate [2] and extend it to Australian biotechnology IPOs in 1999-2004, testing the fit between BM design and product market strategies, and their effect on business performance. Endosperm transfer cells (ETC) are one of four main types of cells in endosperm. A characteristic feature of ETC is the presence of cell wall in-growths that create an enlarged plasma membrane surface area. This specialized cell structure is important for the specific function of ETC, which is to transfer nutrients from maternal vascular tissue to endosperm. ETC-specific genes are of particular interest to plant biotechnologists, who use genetic engineering to improve grain quality and yield characteristics of important field crops. The success of molecular biology-based approaches to manipulating ETC function is dependent on a thorough understanding of the functions of ETC-specific genes and ETC-specific promoters. The aim of this review is to summarize the existing data on structure and function of ETC-specific genes and their products. That potential is being heavily compromised, however, because the European Union and some other countries have implemented strict regulatory systems to govern their production and consumption of genetically modified (GM) food and feed crops, and to prevent imports of foods and feedstuffs that do not meet these strict standards. This paper analyses empirically the potential economic effects of adopting transgenic crops in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. It does so using a multi-country, multi-product model of the global economy. The results suggest the economic welfare gains from crop biotechnology adoption are potentially very large, and that those benefits are diminished only very slightly by the presence of the European Union's restriction on imports of GM foods. That is, if developing countries retain bans on GM crop production in an attempt to maintain access to EU markets for non-GM products, the loss to their food consumers as well as to farmers in those developing countries is huge relative to the slight loss that could be incurred from not retaining EU market access.; Kym Anderson

Student awareness levels are frequently used to evaluate the effectiveness of educational policies to promote scientific literacy. Over the last years several studies have been developed to assess students' perceptions towards science and technology, which usually rely on quantitative methods to achieve broad characterizations, and obtain quantifiable and comparable data. Although the usefulness of this information depends on its validity and reliability, validation is frequently neglected by researchers with limited background in statistics. In this context, we propose a guideline to implement a statistical approach to questionnaire validation, combining exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis. The work focuses on the psychometric analysis of data provided by a questionnaire assessing 1196 elementary and high school students' perceptions about biotechnology. Procedural guidelines to enhance the efficiency of quantitative inquiry surveys are given, by discussing essential methodological aspects and relevant criteria to integrate theory into practice.

DINÂMIA'CET, Junho de 2011.; This paper addresses the network building strategies followed by Portuguese biotechnology start-ups, as well as their implications for the configuration of firms’ networks. Results show that firms combine the use of entrepreneurs’ social capital with an effort to build up new relationships, thus allowing the resource search space to be expanded. The network building strategy is influenced by the team’s characteristics and the nature of the resources searched (knowledge, complementary assets, credibility), which generate different network structures. Results also highlight context-related specificities, such as the central role of research organizations in accessing non-technological resources and the relevance of international relationships.

Many of them have been approached from diverse academic perspectives with long-standing traditions and a great number of them have also benefited from the assumption of new conceptual perspectives. In this respect, history, sociology, and philosophy of technology constitute paradigmatic examples. An analysis of the evolution of these various academic paradigms in recent years is carried out, although succinctly, in the first part of this Working Paper. A biotecnologia pode desempenhar um papel importante para atingir as metas da sustentabilidade. No presente trabalho, são descritos diferentes exemplos bem-sucedidos de micro-organismos especialmente desenhados para otimizar a produção de etanol, a produção de plásticos biodegradáveis a partir de recursos renováveis e a biorremediação de metais tóxicos. Esses processos biotecnológicos contribuem significantemente para promover o desenvolvimento sustentável, embora possam, por enquanto, não ser ainda competitivos em relação às tecnologias convencionais.; Biotechnology can play an important role to reach the goals of sustainability. In the present work, we describe successful examples of microorganisms especially designed for optimizing ethanol production, biodegradable plastics production from renewable resources, and toxic metals bioremediation. These biotechnological processes significantly contribute to promote sustainable development, although they may, at present, not be competitive with the conventional technologies.

As vacinas representam a estratégia de intervenção com a melhor relação custo-benefício até hoje aplicada em saúde pública. Avanços biotecnológicos em diversas áreas de pesquisa têm contribuído para o desenvolvimento de formulações mais seguras e eficazes. Além disso, a aplicação de ferramentas biotecnológicas no desenvolvimento de vacinas tem provocado mudanças na maneira como pensamos e produzimos esses reagentes tanto para uso em humanos como em animais. Essas tecnologias trazem perspectivas de que, em futuro próximo, vacinas para o controle de doenças infecciosas e degenerativas ainda não passíveis de prevenção possam estar disponíveis. This paper addresses "Cooperative Research Networks (CRN)" consisting of a public policy developed by the state government of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in order to encourage and promote scientific research and technological innovation. Primarily, the principal objective of the study is to identify, describe and evaluate the contribution and results of said Cooperative Research Networks related to the biotechnology of Minas Gerais. To achieve this objective, we carried out an analysis of eight accredited research networks in the "Support Program for Research Networks" from a funding agency in Minas Gerais. Data was collected in two phases: firstly, a brief literature review on Cooperative Networks; subsequently, secondary information was raised based on the premise that networks intrinsically integrate important features for both scientific and technological breakthroughs in Minas Gerais so as to fully optimize the use of available resources in the development of Science and Technology (S&T) in strategic sectors. The results confirmed that, when developing a network, the exchange between the institutions involved and the interaction between researchers is encouraged, in addition to promoting understanding, thereby intensifying the expertise of groups of excellence. Chemical imaging is a technique for the simultaneous measurement of spectra (chemical information) and images or pictures (spatial information)^1,2^. The technique is most often applied to either solid or gel samples, and has applications in chemistry, biology^3-8^, medicine^9,10^, pharmacy^11^ (see also for example: Chemical Imaging Without Dyeing), food science, Food Physical Chemistry, Biotechnology^12,13^, Agriculture and industry. NIR, IR and Raman chemical imaging is also referred to as hyperspectral, spectroscopic, spectral or multi-spectral imaging (also see micro-spectroscopy). However, other ultra-sensitive and selective, chemical imaging techniques are also in use that involve either UV-visible or fluorescence microspectroscopy.
