Weaning mix was developed using extrudates of plain and malted pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) and barley (Hordeum vulgare) flour. Central composite rotatable design (CCRD) with four independent variables PME (pearl millet extrudates), PMME (pearl millet malt extrudates), BE (barley extrudates), BME (barley malt extrudates) at five level and five dependent variables, i.e. lightness, peak viscosity (PV), water solubility index (WSI), water absorption index (WAI) and overall acceptability (OAA) scores, were used to conduct the experiments. Highly acceptable weaning mix was obtained by combining optimized ingredients with constant level of skim milk powder (SMP) 25%, WPC-70 5%, sugar 6% and refined vegetable oil 4 ml 100 g-1 mix. The optimized level of ingredients was PME 20.77%, PMME 7.39%, BE 20.99%, BME 6.53% with 81.3% desirability. The nutrient content of optimized weaning mix was in accordance with the standards specified by PFA, 2004.

Next-generation molecular force fields deliver accurate descriptions of non-covalent interactions by employing more elaborate functional forms than their predecessors. Much work has been dedicated to improving the description of the electrostatic potential (ESP) generated by these force fields. A common approach to improving the ESP is by augmenting the point charges on each center with higher-order multipole moments. The resulting anisotropy greatly improves the directionality of the non-covalent bonding, with a concomitant increase in computational cost. In this work, we develop an efficient strategy for enumerating multipole interactions, by casting an efficient spherical harmonic based approach within a particle mesh Ewald (PME) framework. Although the derivation involves lengthy algebra, the final expressions are relatively compact, yielding an approach that can efficiently handle both finite and periodic systems without imposing any approximations beyond PME. Forces and torques are readily obtained, making our method well suited to modern molecular dynamics simulations.

A spontaneous late-ripening mutant of ‘Jincheng’ (C. sinensis L. Osbeck) sweet orange exhibited a delay of fruit pigmentation and harvesting. In this work, we studied the processes of orange fruit ripening through the comparative analysis between the Jincheng mutant and its wild type. This study revealed that the fruit quality began to differ on 166th days after anthesis. At this stage, fruits were subjected to transcriptome analysis by RNA sequencing. 13,412 differentially expressed unigenes (DEGs) were found. Of these unigenes, 75.8% were down-regulated in the wild type, suggesting that the transcription level of wild type was lower than that of the mutant during this stage. These DEGs were mainly clustered into five pathways: metabolic pathways, plant-pathogen interaction, spliceosome, biosynthesis of plant hormones and biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids. Therefore, the expression profiles of the genes that are involved in abscisic acid, sucrose, and jasmonic acid metabolism and signal transduction pathways were analyzed during the six fruit ripening stages. The results revealed the regulation mechanism of sweet orange fruit ripening metabolism in the following four aspects: First, the more mature orange fruits were, the lower the transcription levels were. Second...

The current study is an analysis of public service announcements (PSAs) from an effective safer sex campaign that utilized a sensation-seeking targeting (SENTAR) approach. Two random samples of heterosexually active young adults (sample one N = 1,463, sample two N = 895) viewed different sets of safer sex PSAs on a laptop computer and answered questions about their perceived sensation value and perceived effectiveness. Multiple regression analyses examined the impact of (a) demographic, (b) individual difference, (c) sexual context, and (d) message variables including perceived message sensation value (PMSV) on the perceived message effectiveness (PME) of the PSAs. Results indicated that females, African Americans, condom users, and those with less education viewed the PSAs as slightly more effective than males, Caucasians, non-condom users, and those with more education. PMSV and personal utility emerged as the strongest predictors of PME, even after controlling for all of the aforementioned variables. Implications for further research on PMSV and perceived and actual effectiveness of PSAs are offered.

We studied the transcriptional and translational expression of a group of genes associated with cell wall metabolism (Cob, GLS, GalT, CCR, PL, PG, PME, β-Gal, β- Man, α-Ara, Exp1, Exp2, Exp3 and Exp4), endomembrane transport (SFT2, Vap27-2, ADL1A, ROC7, Rab5, Vamp, Kin, Cla, Syn, ERD2 and Rab11), expression of HSPs (HSP40-1er, HSP70er, HSP40-2er, HSPCNX1, HSPCRT2 , HSP70ch, HSP17.8ch, HSP60mi, HSP26.5mi and HSP60-3Bmi) and ethylene synthesis (ACCO) in peaches treated and not treated with gibberellic acid (GA3), monitoring the evolution of ripening and the changes occurred after cold storage (CS) and controlled atmosphere (CA). As variables for characterization of ripening fruit evaluated the production of ethylene, firmness, total acidity (TA), soluble solids (SS), SS / TA ratio and background color of the skin. Initially molecular changes were evaluated in fruit at different maturation stages. Later, the effect of different storage conditions on woolliness development was studied, and finally, the effect of GA3 in delaying maturation and preventing woolliness was evaluated. It was verified that peach ripening is dependent on genes encoding proteins involved in synthesis and degradation of cell wall and proteins involved in the endomembrane transport. Analyzing different forms of storage was observed that the use of controlled atmosphere conditions reduced woolliness...

Includes bibliography; Abstract This paper attempted to measure the evolution of income distribution and its determinants during the period of economic reforms. The paper was divided in two parts: in the first and main part of the paper, long-run relations between reforms and income distribution were explored. The second part of the paper explored relations between movements of distributive variables, on the one hand, and economic reforms and macroeconomic fluctuations, on the other. First, we attempted to study the impact of the economic reforms on the riches. First, we assessed absolute income changes in the top 10% of the income distribution assessing how the composition of this group changed during the reform period. We also assessed how much of the changes in inequality observed between pre-reform and post-reform periods comes from changes at the 10% richest. While the absolute contribution of the 10% richest to total inequality is extremely high in Brazil, there is not much evidence to suggest that it has increased over the period of the reforms. In the 1990-93 period this contribution in the case of the economically active population has risen from 79.5 to 83.5 then fall to 81.7 in 1997. It is interesting to note that the peak of the series was found in 1976. The second channel analyzed here is the skill-differential between the high school group and the rest of the labor force. One of the reasons why this breakdown is of interest is the evidence that growth is increasingly skill-intensive. The analysis of the profile of the 10% richest stresses the importance of general human capital explanatory power: 7.83% of the population has 12 or more years of education while the share of this group among the rich corresponds to 44% and 61% when one take into account the extension of the rich group income. This last statistic was 53% in 1990 which indicates a sharp effect of the reforms on the composition of the riches towards highly educated groups. In the period of reforms 1990-97...

The low oxidative demand and muscular adaptations accompanying eccentric exercise hold benefits for both healthy and clinical populations. Compression garments have been suggested to reduce muscle damage and maintain muscle function. This study investigated whether compression garments could benefit metabolic recovery from eccentric exercise. Following 30-min of downhill walking participants wore compression garments on one leg (COMP), the other leg was used as an internal, untreated control (CONT). The muscle metabolites phosphomonoester (PME), phosphodiester (PDE), phosphocreatine (PCr), inorganic phosphate (Pi) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were evaluated at baseline, 1-h and 48-h after eccentric exercise using 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Subjective reports of muscle soreness were recorded at all time points. The pressure of the garment against the thigh was assessed at 1-h and 48-h following exercise. There was a significant increase in perceived muscle soreness from baseline in both the control (CONT) and compression (COMP) leg at 1-h and 48-h following eccentric exercise (p < 0.05). Relative to baseline, both CONT and COMP showed reduced pH at 1-h (p < 0.05). There was no difference between CONT and COMP pH at 1-h. COMP legs exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) elevated skeletal muscle PDE 1-h following exercise. There was no significant change in PCr/Pi...

Several authors have reported greater muscle tension in Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) patients than in non-anxious controls, and muscle relaxation therapy (MRT) is as clinically effective in the treatment of GAD as Cognitive-Behavior Therapy. MRT assumes that GAD patients lack the ability to relax, but can learn this in therapy. We tested these assumptions by recruiting 49 GAD patients and randomizing them to individualized 12-week Applied Relaxation (AR) treatment (Öst, 1987) or to a waiting list control (WLC) condition. Before, during, and after treatment participants underwent a Relaxation Test, in which for 5 min, in randomized order, they (a) just sat quietly (QS) and (b) sat quietly and tried to relax (R). The tests were preceded by a 2 min speaking period. Before treatment, GAD patients were more anxious and worried during the laboratory assessment than non-anxious controls (n = 21), had higher heart rates and lower end-tidal pCO2, but did not differ in multi-channel electromyographic recordings. QS and R did not differ in most psychological and physiological measures: Thus, before training the intention to relax did not speed relaxation. AR patients showed greater improvement than the WLC group at the end of treatment (Cohen’s d = 0.24 - 1.13)...

Naval Special Warfare does not currently have a designated career path for an officer that requires professional military education (PME) for SEAL junior officers after the rank of Ensign (O-1) and before the rank of Lieutenant Commander (O-4). There currently is interest in this subject matter at the Naval Special Warfare Command and Center. SEAL officers increasingly hold key leadership positions and influence critical decisions in the execution of national strategy. This growing responsibility calls for a progressive and sequential education program to prepare junior officers for battle, staff, and command. Additionally, the Naval Special Warfare Officer corps will continue to grow in the coming years, adding more junior officers to the community. SEAL junior officers would benefit from structured PME throughout their careers. Through research analysis and a survey of Naval Special Warfare officers this thesis attempts to determine what education is critical for a SEAL junior officer. Additionally, this thesis attempts to determine the most efficient way to address education shortfalls and the frequency in which education should be experienced. Finally, the Naval Special Warfare junior officer community will benefit from education opportunities inserted into the officer career path to address nineteen specific subjects indicated in this research.

Conference Proceedings. 15 - 16 January 1998, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. Reported by Shelly A Jones and Judy A. Daniel. Compiled by Barbara Honegger. Cover design by LT Craig Anderson. Edite by CDR Michael D. Palatas.; The Naval Postgraduate School and Office of Naval Research were pleased to host the Professional Military Education for the 21st Century Warrior Conference in January 1998. An impressive group of top-ranking legislators, academicians, historians, and military education community leaders came together at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey to present and discuss the history, current status, and future of professional military education (PME). The conference presentations and panel discussions, transcripts of which are included in this proceedings book, raised and proposed solutions to some of the challenges that face those in the military education community. The overall tone of conference participants indicated that, while PME has improved significantly as a result of Goldwater-Nichols legislation and the Skelton Panel recommendations, there is still work to be done.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; The United States Special Operations Command does not have an intermediate-level professional military education program for its officers. Current service-provided PME programs are not adequately meeting the educational goals for officers as required by USSOCOM. Through the Joint Special Operations University, SOCOM could establish its own PME program for officers of all services who are assigned to USSOCOM. Through the review of formal documents and interviews with senior officers in USSOCOM, an education gap was identified and analyzed. Three courses of action are presented as to how USSOCOM can overcome this education gap and meet Admiral William H. McRavens intent to have the best educated force in the United States military.
