The objective of this thesis is to analyze the dynamics of the mobile industry and propose tools that will help create robust strategies to establish competitive advantage. In the mobile industry, competition is so keen that it is extremely difficult for mobile operators to maintain their competitive advantage for a long time. Therefore mobile operators need a clear view of the industry in order to develop strategies that will help them survive the keen competition. The tools proposed in this thesis should provide insights into the dynamics of the mobile industry. First, two concepts, "Double clockspeed" and "Three phases within system generation," are introduced. Not only must mobile operators improve their current systems but they must also keep in mind the need to migrate to the next-generation system. Therefore these companies should take into consideration double clockspeed as it relates to the clockspeed of system generation, and the clockspeed of service. On the other hand, an analysis of the mobile industry shows that there are three phases, "Initial Phase", "Differentiation Phase", and "Commodity Phase," within the system generation, and the dynamics of the mobile industry change according to the length and timing of these phases. These two concepts are extremely important for understanding the dynamics of the mobile industry. Then...

In this study, I identify and discuss innovation strategies for the Japanese banking industry, with special focus on the R&D process through which banks are seeking to create new e-business opportunities. Traditionally, it was thought to be difficult to undertake well-organized R&D activities in a service industry because the intangible nature of banking services made it difficult to conduct R&D in a typical laboratory setting. Therefore, many service firms did not organize formal R&D activities. Furthermore, Japanese banks faced environmental obstacles to innovation, including government regulations, non-performing loans, and legacy assets that were difficult to abandon, such as the backbone banking system supported by major mainframe architecture. Today, emerging Internet technologies are at last triggering R&D activities among Japanese banks, and they are achieving some success in this field. This thesis identifies empirical R&D methods that have become more commonly used by Japanese banks, as well as the problems encountered in the effort to generate creative and effective ideas, screen them, perform trial-and-error iterations, and manage tests on real-life situations to gain customer input. I identify four factors that can help banks achieve innovation: managing institutional matters...

This thesis presents research about the potential business impacts of the Semantic Web. The concept of the Semantic Web is an expansion of the Web for computers, enabling them to comprehend the meaning of information. In addition, Semantic Web Services (SWS), the emerging convergence of Web Services with the Semantic Web, is the next major generation of the Web (and of the Internet), in which e-services and business communication become more knowledge-based and agent-based. The study arose out of a technology review of the Semantic Web and its current adoption. Following further analysis and research into business cases involving Semantic Web applications, the author focused specifically on the system integration business in an effort to understand the potential business impacts of the Semantic Web for system integration. In the system integration field, there are various trends for companies thinking about adopting the Semantic Web into the real business world. In this thesis, I offer answers to two questions: Why do system integrators need the Semantic Web, and how they should go about adopting it?; by Akio Saita.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program...

This thesis assesses the problem of adverse environmental impacts due to the use of Portland cement and structural steel in the construction industry. The thesis outlines three technology and policy strategies to mitigate these impacts: 1. Reduce consumption; 2. Select materials to minimize impacts; and 3. Explore alternative new materials that have lesser impacts. The main findings and recommendations in each of these areas are as follows: Reduce Consumption: While absolute consumption of materials will grow with a growing population, recycling and reuse of structural members can reduce use of virgin material. Since recycling is already widely practiced, reuse of structural members is the primary means of further reducing consumption. Barriers to reuse can be eliminated by establishing design standards and regulations for reuse of structural sections, and creating functioning markets for re-useable sections. Select materials to minimize impacts: While designers are keen to select materials with minimum impacts, they do not have appropriate education or tools for the purpose. Standardization and simplification of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools, and education of designers are identified as the main areas for improvement. The main recommendations are: i) standardize LCA tools; reduce the number of impact categories...

Web wrapping technologies were developed in the 90s in the middle of the dot com boom to facilitate the extraction of web data. In recent years, the underlying architecture of web wrapping technologies is also been used for other applications such as information integration between legacy systems in large enterprises. Despite the relatively widespread use of this technology, there is currently no uniform way of characterizing web wrapping toolkits, unlike say, a digital camera which can be described in terms of the size of its sensor or storage capacity. The focus of this thesis therefore is to develop a taxonomy or classification scheme that can be used to effectively describe a web wrapping toolkit in terms of its retrieval, extraction and conversion features. For this purpose, some 20 toolkits are studied and of which, verification tests were performed on 9 of these toolkits where evaluation copies are available. The last part of the thesis discusses two policy Acts that are closely related to data extraction. They are the EU Database Directive and the HR3261 Database and Collection of Information Misappropriation Act. A comparative analysis between the two Acts was performed and their respective implications on the database producing industry were examined.; by Shin Wee Chuang.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

This thesis anticipates the need for structural change within public transportation systems and the need for clear goals and indicators relating to structural reform to provide real time course correction and periodic evaluation of goal achievement. The research is applied to the Chicago public transportation system because this system is currently experiencing problems and structural reform may be considered in the (near) future. Also, because structural change should deal with problems experienced in a particular system, performance should be evaluated primarily within that system over time and, physical and socioeconomic differences among regions make it difficult to compare systems across metropolitan areas. Literature review indicates that the focus of transit agencies is shifting from design standards to indicators that include a customer perspective. Main stakeholders to be represented in the performance indicators are discussed and the concept of triple sustainability is introduced in the need for indicators that reflect long-term changes in system usage or condition. Also, issues are listed that should be considered when narrowing down and refining potential indicators into a reasonable number of readily measured indicators. The electric utility sector is introduced to find potential lessons of what has worked...

(cont.) In the process, this thesis intervenes in social theoretical debates not simply around the nature and production of knowledge and value, but also around the place of larger belief-systems - relating to religion, nation and ethics - in such productive enterprises. It simultaneously intervenes in conceptual debates within cultural anthropology regarding methodological questions that surround the undertaking of comparative ethnographic projects of powerful sites of knowledge production and value generation in a globalized world.; This thesis is concerned with tracking and theorizing the co-production of an emergent technoscientific regime - that of biotechnology in the context of drug development - with an emergent political economic regime that sees the increased prevalence of such research in corporate locales, with corporate agendas and practices. Hence biocapital, which asks questions of the implications for life sciences when performed in corporations, and for capitalism, when biotechnology becomes a key source of market value. The methodology followed in this dissertation is multi-sited ethnography. I study a range of actors - including academic and industrial scientists, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and policy makers - in two distinct national environments...

The military aircraft industry is a cornerstone of national security and of the economic health of the United States. The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program was sold as a solution to a host of needs, from advancing the capabilities of each Service, modernizing an aging fleet, countering sophisticated threats, enhancing inter-service cooperation, and implementing acquisition reform, all in a revolutionarily cost-effective way. Because of this tantalizing promise, the early JSF program was able to navigate through budgetary pressures while other aircraft programs were cancelled. This thesis argues that the JSF program is a manifestation of a collective action problem, wherein stakeholders, who should be providing a check on each other, are cooperating, even as the stakeholder who should be participating, remains uninvolved. Consequently, the acquisition policies brought in with the JSF program are not improving acquisition policy, but are exacerbating the inefficiencies to which the U.S military acquisition system has historically been prone. This analysis provides insight into how to improve the technology policies governing military aircraft acquisition, and the supply of aircraft to other nations. This analysis is geared for senior policy makers in both government and industry...

The electricity sector is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global climate change. Over the past decade wind energy has steadily emerged as a potential source for large-scale, low carbon energy. As wind power generation increases around the world, there is increasing interest in the impacts of adding intermittent power to the electricity grid and the potential costs of compensating for the intermittency. The goal of this thesis research is to assess the costs and potential of wind power as a greenhouse gas abatement option for electricity generation. Qualitative and quantitative analysis methods are used to evaluate the challenges involved in integrating intermittent generation into the electricity sector. A computable generation equilibrium model was developed to explicitly account for the impacts of increasing wind penetration on the capacity value given to wind. The model also accounts for the impacts of wind quality and geographic diversity on electricity generation, and the impacts of learning-by-doing on the total cost of production. We notice that the rising costs associated of intermittency will limit the ability of wind to take a large share of the electricity market. As wind penetration increases...

(cont.) We describe the ethical debate and political climate that led to the decision. An examination of the publication data shows that researchers in the United States have in fact remained leaders in the field until this point, in part because U.S. federal funding has also been available to early mover international groups who appear to have abided by the restrictions.; Restoring damaged or diseased tissue in the body may involve the use of biomaterial scaffolds that provide a responsive environment for cell proliferation. Such scaffolds may be used for in situ cell regeneration, where an implanted scaffold incites cell growth in the body, as well as for growing artificial tissue in vitro by seeding cells in a scaffold that will be implanted at a later stage of development or used for physiological tissue models. The research outlined in this thesis describes two methods of characterizing the stiffness of a biomaterial scaffold. It is well known that cell growth in vitro is affected by the moduli of the surrounding scaffold. Stiffness is also cited as a major factor affecting angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels. We describe a new rheometric method to examine the bulk mechanical properties of a self-assembling peptide biomaterial that spontaneously forms a filament network in a physiological salt solution and supports cell attachment and differentiation. This method has two major advantages: first...

The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments require the U.S. EPA to control mercury emission outputs from coal-burning power plants through implementation of MACT, Maximum Achievable Control Technology, standards. However, in 2003 the Bush Administration revealed an alternative and controversial regulatory strategy for mercury, developing a cap and trade emissions credit trading program under the Clear Skies Initiative. Although emissions trading was proven to be a successful regulatory strategy for sulfur dioxide through the 1992 Acid Rain Program, the uniquely dangerous properties of mercury make this market-based regulation risky for certain vulnerable segments of the population. Since its unveiling, the Clear Skies cap and trade approach has been criticized for being too industry-friendly and inadequately setting limits on mercury emissions. Current challenges to the Clear Skies approach to the regulation of mercury claim that not only is it illegal under the Clear Air Act, but that it inhibits innovation and undermines an international strategy to reduce anthropogenic mercury emissions. This thesis evaluates the critiques of Clear Skies and the reasoning given by the EPA in defense of the regulation.; (cont.) Recent academic studies and a comparison case study with the Acid Rain Program are used to discuss the probable effects of Clear Skies on mercury reduction. The main questions addressed in the thesis are: 1) what is the motivation for Clear Skies? 2) what is the legal basis for the Initiative? 3) what are the potential failures of Clear Skies in protecting against mercury exposure? 4) what will be the resulting impact of Clear Skies on technological innovation? and 5) how does Clear Skies compare with international mercury reduction strategies?; by Meghan Sweeney.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

In 2005, a start-up social business called Pure Home Water (PHW) was begun in Ghana to promote and sell household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) technologies. The original aim of the company was to offer a variety of products, allowing customers to choose the technology which best fit their individual needs. This differed from the typical implementation of HWTS promoters to date, in which an organization often distributes a single technology for the population to use. Instead, Pure Home Water wanted to give users a choice. PHW is also unique because they are attempting to sell their products without any subsidy. The goal is to create a sustainable business that will both bring better quality water to the population and be financially self-supporting. Because the company is new, a need existed to gather data on the demographic, health, and water and sanitation infrastructure within the region. Due to the geographic nature of the project, it was decided that a Geographic Information System (GIS) would be the best tool to store, analyze and represent the data.; (cont.) The system could be used to help plan relevant business strategies, and maps could be created to visually communicate important information among the Pure Home Water team and other interested parties. The final database did achieve the goal of collecting and bringing together important regional information in a form hopefully useful to PHW...

September 11th, 2001 marks the worst terrorist action to occur on United States soil and opens a new period in history in which indiscriminate terrorist acts are possible, if not probable. Many of these possible acts, as well as the actions to prevent and recover, will have an impact on the supply chain and services in ways that we cannot yet understand. Previous research has focused on theft prevention and the disruptions such thefts might cause, and very little research on the supply chain impacts of September 11th exist. What is clear, however, is that as government agencies include the creation of public-private partnerships as well as the introduction of new technology, increasing inventory, and building system resilience, among others. Limited examples of public-private partnerships for security exist, however, there are several examples of partnerships for emergency response. Since both emergency response partnerships and security collaboratives share the same objective - to protect and secure the personnel, facilities, and supply chain - this thesis investigates emergency response, early detection, and propose new policies and regulations and the threat of international terrorism continues, corporate America needs to find a method for securing their operations. These methods may post-September 11th security examples to determine the key factors in establishing successful public-private partnerships. The learnings indicate collaborative partnerships and emergency response cooperatives are the most commonly used for promoting security and that motivation...
