We report the synthesis of single-phase, crystalline CdSiO3 nanostructures at 580ºC; to the best of our knowledge, this is the lowest temperature at which this material is reported to form. The desired phase does not form below 580ºC, since the diffraction peaks are shifted to lower angles in the material treated at 570ºC when compared to JDPDS Card No. 85-0310. The source of silicon has strong influence on the product morphology: Na2SiO3 yields single-phase CdSiO3 in needle-shaped nanostructures, while high surface area mesostructured SiO2 yields coralloid-shaped particles. Low angle X-ray diffractometry reveals that the mesostructured nature of the silica precursor is not maintained in the resulting CdSiO3. Scanning electron microscopy suggests that in this case a transition occurs between the spherical morphology of the precursor and the needle-shape morphology of the material prepared from Na2SiO3. The surface area of the silica precursor has a strong influence in the reaction, since the use of commercial silica with a lower surface area does not yield the desired product.; Descreve-se a síntese de nanoestruturas de CdSiO3 cristalino como fase única a 580ºC; ao que sabemos, esta é a mais baixa temperatura de formação observada até o presente para este composto.

A determinação U-Pb...

Estes efeitos demonstram a capacidade de LASSBio-581 em modular o sistema serotonérgico in vivo e in vitro.

Mice infected with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei brucei and treated subcuratively with the trypanocidal drug diminazene aceturate develop an acute inflammatory meningoencephalitis with associated astrocytic proliferation. This reaction is very similar to that seen in the fatal posttreatment reactive encephalopathies that can occur in human African trypanosomiasis. The 11-amino acid neuropeptide substance P (SP) has recently been identified as a mediator in many inflammatory responses, and the development of potent, highly specific, nonpeptide SP antagonists has provided a new opportunity to investigate the possible involvement of SP in a variety of pathological conditions. We therefore postulated that SP may play a role in the development of the posttreatment inflammatory encephalopathy found in this experimental mouse model of African trypanosomiasis. In the present study RP-67,580, a SP antagonist that binds specifically to NK-1 receptors, was given intraperitoneally at a dose of 2 mg/kg twice daily to mice in which a severe meningoencephalitis had been produced. A significant reduction in both the severity of the inflammatory response (P = 0.0001) as well as the degree of astrocyte activation (P < 0.001) was found in the brains of these animals as compared with control mice that had not received RP-67...

A review of 580 hospital case notes of patients with motor neuron disease (MND) revealed 20 families in which more than one case had been reported. For 27 of the cases in these families full medical records were available, and a history of a further 37 affected family members were obtained. The cases in these 20 families are termed familial and the remainder sporadic. Parent to child transmission occurred in 16 of the 20 families of the familial cases, suggesting autosomal dominant inheritance. In three families there was involvement of siblings only, and in one family two cousins were affected. The sex ratio for the documented familial case records seen was 0.8:1 (M/F = 12:15), for the total (documented and historical) it was 1.06:1 (33:31), but in sporadic cases it was 1.6:1 (341:212) and more frequent occurrence of sensory features at presentation was reported in the familial cases (15% in the familial cases and 5% in the sporadic cases). However, none of these differences reached statistical significance. Familial cases also differed from sporadic cases in having a younger age of onset (a mean of 52 years in the familial cases compared with 56 years in the sporadic) and in the shorter median reported duration of illness (1.1 year in the familial cases; 2.6 years in the sporadic). However...

It was reported that chicken gizzard smooth-muscle caldesmon Cys-580 can be disulphide-cross-linked to the C-terminal pen-ultimate residue (Cys-374) of actin, indicating that these residues are close in the protein complex [Graceffa, P. and Jancso, A. (1991) J. Biol. Chem. 266, 20305-20310]. Since the possibility that the cross-link involves a cysteine residue other than actin Cys-374 was not absolutely excluded, more direct evidence was sought for the identify of the cysteine residues involved in the cross-link. We show here that caldesmon could not be disulphide-cross-linked to actin which had Cys-374 removed by carboxypeptidase A digestion, providing direct support for the participation of actin Cys-374 in the cross-link to caldesmon. In order to assign the caldesmon cysteine residue involved in the cross-link, use was made of caldesmon from porcine stomach muscle, which is shown to contain one cysteine residue close to, or at, position 580, in contrast with chicken gizzard caldesmon, which has an additional cysteine residue at position 153. The porcine stomach caldesmon also formed a disulphide-cross-link to actin, further supporting the original conclusion that Cys-580 of the chicken gizzard caldesmon had been cross-linked to actin. Disulphide-cross-linking with similar yield was also observed in native chicken gizzard muscle thin filaments...

We have observed, by low-temperature picosecond spectroscopy, a photo-induced transient at 580 nm in light-adapted bacteriorhodopsin. The transient was characterized by bleaching in the 550-585-nm regions within 6 ps and recovery in approximately 20 ps. The spectral intensity of the transient is found to be enhanced at lower temperatures, and the lifetime slightly elongated.

1. The effects on micturition of RP 67,580, a selective NK1 receptor antagonist, and SR 48,968, a highly, potent antagonist at NK2 receptor sites, given intrathecally (i.t.) or intra-arterially (i.a.) near the bladder, were investigated in unanaesthetized rats with and without bladder outlet obstruction. 2. In normal rats, RP 67,580, given i.t. in doses of 2 and 20 nmol per rat, decreased micturition pressure, but did not change other cystometric parameters. After 20 nmol of RP 67,580, dribbling incontinence due to retention was observed in 1 out of 7 animals. This effect was reversible. I.t. RP 67,580 in a dose of 2 nmol, had no effect on hyperactivity induced by intravesically instilled capsaicin. 3. In animals with bladder hypertrophy secondary to outflow obstruction, RP 67,580, given i.t. in a dose of 2 nmol per rat, decreased the micturition pressure, but had no effect on other cystometric parameters. After 20 nmol, dribbling incontinence due to retention was observed in 5 out of 7 animals. 4. RP 67,580, given i.a. in a dose of 4 nmol, had little effect on the cystometric parameters investigated, both in normal animals and rats with bladder hypertrophy. 5. Lamivudine concentration-time courses were described for a very large range of ages to study the effects of body weight and maturation on lamivudine pharmacokinetics and to check the consistency of dosing recommendations. Lamivudine concentrations were monitored on a routine basis to produce concentrations similar to the known values in adults. Concentrations were measured in 580 children from 2 days to 18 years old. A total of 2,106 plasma lamivudine concentrations were measured, and a population pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using the stochastic approximation expectation maximization algorithm implemented in MONOLIX 3.1 software. A two-compartment model adequately described the data. After standardization for a mean standard body weight by using an allometric model, age also had a significant effect on clearance maturation. Typical population estimates (percent interindividual variability) standardized for 70 kg of the apparent clearance, including central and peripheral volumes of distribution, intercompartmental clearance, and absorption rate constant, were 31 liters·h−1 (32%), 76.4 liters (77%), 129 liters, 5.83 liters·h−1, and 0.432 h−1, respectively. According to the model, elimination clearance (liters/h/70 kg) increases gradually during the first years of life. Theoretical doses needed to reach the range of 24 h of exposure observed in adults were calculated: to be closer to adult exposure...

Background. In our preliminary experiments we found that composite skin grafts consisting of allogeneic acellular dermis and thin epidermal autologous grafts applied to the excised burn wound in one stage led to better results in terms of viscoelastic properties than autologous split-thickness skin grafts. Patients and methods. In ten burn patients we applied composite skin grafts consisting of allogeneic acellular dermis and thin epidermal autologous grafts and followed the quality of the reconstructed skin cover with a special device, Cutometer MPA 580, over a period of four years. Results. The cutometric curves demonstrated better viscoelastic properties in composite skin grafts than in conventional split-thickness skin grafts after four years. We found Cutometer MPA 580 to be an advantageous device for the objectification of improved quality of reconstructed skin cover. Discussion. Among the various methods the cutometer showed the advantage of being a non-invasive, precise, and objective method of measuring skin’s viscoelastic properties. The Vancouver Scar Score is a subjective evaluation of skin viscoelasticity. Conclusion. Our prospective clinical study clearly demonstrated that cutometric measurement produced objective results in contrast to clinical evaluation...

This paper provides an overview of the baseline data collected in the nationwide Danish Centre for Strategic Research in Type 2 Diabetes (DD2) project. The paper presents descriptive data from the first 580 patients enrolled in the DD2. The DD2 database will contain detailed interview data, clinical examination data, and urine and blood samples from up to 10,000 patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes each year, collected from general practitioners and hospital outpatient clinics in all of Denmark. Of the first DD2 patients enrolled, blood and urine samples have been obtained from 97%. The median age of the first 580 patients was 59 years and 322 (56%) were men. Median weight gain from age 20 to maximum lifetime weight was 29 kg for men and 31 kg for women, and 364 patients (63%) did not currently participate in regular sports activities. Two hundred and ninety two patients (50%) had a known family history of diabetes. Two hundred fifty (43%) of the 580 DD2 patients have also been enrolled in the Danish Diabetes Database for Adults from which additional clinical data can be obtained. Among these 250 patients (154 of whom were men, 96 women), 75 (49%) men were currently obese, and 63 (41%) were overweight, whereas 62 (65%) women were obese...

College student volunteers (n = 142) completed a 580 km road march for 21 consecutive days. Each volunteer carried a backpack that weighed 14.1 ± 1.4 kg on the average. We investigated the incidence and location of blisters associated with the road march using a foot map along with other injuries. Overall, 95.1% of the subjects (135 of 142) sustained one or more injuries. All injured subjects had foot blisters, and 18% had other foot injuries. The most common locations of blister development were the right 5th toe (61%) and the left 5th toe (57%). The little toes seem to have been subjected to the greatest friction and shearing forces. March-related injuries, excluding foot injuries, were ankle pain (12.7%), knee pain (12.7%) and Achilles tendon pain (7.7%). Six subjects (4.2%) needed extra medical treatment for more than 2 weeks prior to returning to their daily lives after completion of the march due to associated injuries. The present study observed a very high incidence rate of injuries (95.1%) associated with the 580 km university students grand road march. These injuries posed an obstacle against completion of the road march and against returning to daily life. Active preventive interventions such as physical therapy and customized reinforced shoes and education program are recommended for reducing incidence rate and severity of injuries.

Efficient liposome disruption inside the cells is a key for success with any type of drug delivery system. The efficacy of drug delivery is currently evaluated by direct visualization of labeled liposomes internalized by cells, not addressing objectively the release and distribution of the drug. Here, we propose a novel method to easily assess liposome disruption and drug release into the cytoplasm. We propose the encapsulation of the cationic dye Hoechst 34,580 to detect an increase in blue fluorescence due to its specific binding to negatively charged DNA. For that, the dye needs to be released inside the cell and translocated to the nucleus. The present approach correlates the intensity of detected fluorescent dye with liposome disruption and consequently assesses drug delivery within the cells.; Eugénia Nogueira (SFRH/BD/81269/2011), Célia F. We have performed a new model independent amplitude analysis of reaction $\pi^- p \to \pi^- \pi^+ n$ measured at CERN at 17.2 GeV/c on polarized target. The analysis extends the range of dipion mass from 600--880 MeV used in the previous study to 580--1080 MeV. Our purpose is to study the role of $f_0(980)$ interference and to better determine the resonance parameters of $\sigma(750)$ resonance from fits to both S-wave amplitudes $|\bar S|^2\Sigma$ and $|S|^2\Sigma$ with recoil nucleon transversities ``up'' and ``down'', respectively. This work is the first attempt to determine resonance parameters of a resonance from Breit-Wigner fits to production amplitudes of opposite transversity. We used several fitting procedures to understand the resonant structure of the S-wave amplitudes in this mass range. The simultaneous fit to $|\bar S|^2\Sigma$ and $|S|^2\Sigma$ with two common $\sigma$ poles yields an excellent fit with a lower $\chi^2/dpt$ than the separate fits. All amplitudes are dominated by a $\sigma$ state with $m_\sigma = 786 \pm 24$ MeV and $\Gamma_\sigma = 130\pm 47$ MeV. All amplitudes receive a weaker contribution from a narrower $\sigma'$ state with $m_{\sigma'} = 670 \pm 30$ MeV and $\Gamma_{\sigma'} = 59 \pm 58$ MeV. We propose to identify $\sigma'(670)$ and $\sigma(786)$ with colour-electric and colour-magnetic modes of lowest mass scalar gluonium $0^{++} (gg)$.; Comment: 47 pages...
