Probable consequences of the mitigation of citrus canker eradication methodology in Sao Paulo state Recently the Sao Paulo state government mitigated its citrus canker eradication methodology adopted since 1999. In April 2009 at least 99.8% of commercial sweet orange orchards were free of citrus canker in Sao Paulo state. Consequently the mitigation of the eradication methodology reduced the high level of safety and the competitiveness of the citrus production sector in Sao Paulo state, Brazil. Therefore we suggest the re-adoption of the same eradication methodology of citrus canker adopted in Sao Paulo from 1999 to 2009, or the adoption of a new methodology, effective for citrus canker suppression, because in new sample surveys citrus canker was detected in >0.36% of affected orchards. This incidence threshold was calculated by using the Duncan test (P <= 0.05) to compare the yearly sample surveys conducted in Sao Paulo state to estimate citrus canker incidence between 1999 and 2009. The calculated minimum significant level was 0.28% among sample surveys and the lowest citrus canker incidence in Sao Paulo state was 0.08%, occurring in 2001. Thus, as an alternative, we suggest the adoption of a new eradication methodology for citrus canker suppression when a new sample survey detected >0.36% of affected orchards in Sao Paulo state...

The study of urban dispersion on a local scale requires the adoption of operational concepts. This research uses the notion of "Base Land Unit" (BLU), which represents a functional and experiential reality. The current paper presents an explanation of this concept and a methodology to distinguish BLU of dispersed occupation from other types of Units (concentrated, unbuilt…). The developed methodology comprises three different methods: - Identification of Building Ensembles by Digital Method; - Calculation of the Disaggregation Index of Continuous Building Ensembles; - Criterion for Identifying BLU of Dispersed Occupation. A detailed description of each phase is presented, as well as the results of its application in the case studies of the Research Project (Évora and Aveiro-Ílhavo).

Mestrado em Marketing; How Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is regarded has been changing over time, and is currently a phenomenon with considerable importance, not only for big organizations but also for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), due to the competitiveness that presently exists. After the literature review about the theme, the research questions emerged were: Why do SMEs need to implement CRM? How is CRM implemented in SMEs? In this, we proposed a methodology for the adoption of CRM by SMEs. A multiple case study, with an exploratory approach, was conducted. Data was collected throught semi-structured interviews in 6 organizations, with a total of 19 interviews. These organizations needed to be SMEs and to have a CRM strategy implemented in it already. Although, there are many SMEs that do not have the necessary resources to implement an adequate combined CRM strategy as well as CRM software, many result in using other programs that are more accessible, but not without limitations. This study proposes a suggestion for CRM adoption in SMEs, taking into consideration the analysis of the current CRM strategies employed by 6 different Portuguese SMEs, their characteristics, qualities and limitations, as well as their current experience. In our sample we were alble to observe that most processes corroborated what was presented in the literature. However...

Agricultural development efforts quite frequently involve programs designed to extend knowledge to farm people through various kinds of extension programs. Yet, the basic methodology for evaluating such programs is not very well developed. The typical approach is to evaluate the impact of the extension service on various measures of physical productivity, or on other characteristics of technical change. This may involve the calculation of indices of partia1 and total productivity, andlor the collection of data on rates of adoption of new modern inputs or the use of new farm practices. One objective of the present paper is to suggest the application of a methodology which appears to have promise as a means of evaluating the impact of extension programs on a broader base. In addition the results of applying the methodology in a limited evaluation of the extension program of (ACAR), the extension agency for the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil, are also presented, as is a discussion of the implications of the results obtained.; 1984

The concept that a model of the methodology of technology transfer and utilization has two major subdivisions, formal vs informal communications, is discussed briefly. Some literature support for the informal communications aspect of the model of the methodology of technology transfer and utilization are presented. An in depth analysis is made of one of the informal elements of the model, 'linker-stabilizer behavior.' The analysis is based on two studies of technically trained personnel; one, Naval Officers, and the Second, Government Service Employees. The thrust of the analysis and the conclusion seem to indicate strongly that the commonality of the technical training is more dominant than the decision to be a Naval Officer or a Government Service Employee. This conclusion thus supports the belief that the distribution of linker-stabilizer behavior characteristics has a general base in terms of technically trained personnel and is not unique to a select population; Prepared for: Naval Facilities Engineering Command Alexandria, Virginia; http://archive.org/details/technologytransf00joll

BACKGROUND: Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs) have gained significant popularity among software engineering (SE) researchers since 2004. Several researchers have also been working on improving the scientific and technological support for SLRs in SE. We argue that there is also an essential need for evidence-based body of knowledge about different aspects of the adoption of SLRs in SE. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this research is to empirically investigate the adoption and use of SLRs in SE research from various perspectives. METHOD: We used multi-method approach as it is based on a combination of complementary research methods which are expected to compensate each others' limitations. RESULTS: A large majority of the participants are convinced of the value of using a rigorous and systematic methodology for literature reviews. However, there are concerns about the required time and resources for SLRs. One of the most important motivators for performing SLRs is new findings and inception of innovative ideas for further research. The reported SLRs are more influential compared to the traditional literature reviews in terms of number of citations. One of the main challenges of conducting SLRs is drawing a balance between rigor and required effort. CONCLUSIONS: SLR has become a popular research methodology for conducting literature review and evidence aggregation in SE. There is an overall positive perception about this methodology. The findings provide interesting insights into different aspects of SLRs. We expect that the findings can provide valuable information to readers on what can be expected from conducting SLRs and the potential impact of such reviews.; He Zhang...

PURPOSE – Given the increased importance of inter-organizational networks in fostering innovation, the purpose of this paper is to isolate drivers of the adoption of inter-organizational systems (IOS) that support innovation processes. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – Based on qualitative research incorporating a focus group and in-depth interviews, a network framework is provided for understanding key drivers concerning IOS adoption. FINDINGS – The research uncovers factors for facilitating coordination and communication efficiencies and outlines the roles that trust and commitment can play in managing innovation within networks through IOS use. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS – To enhance our understanding of innovations that are entrenched in networks of heterogeneous actors, this research contributes by employing an interdisciplinary approach as it applies network and relationships marketing literatures to the IOS adoption in innovation settings. ORIGINALITY/VALUE – The paper advances theory development on innovation management and technology adoption by offering a network framework, a shift from extant literature's predominant focus on individual and organizational levels.; Giselle Rampersad, Indrit Troshani and Carolin Plewa

Purpose – Despite the growing prominence of innovation, limited studies examine the adoption of applications that support innovation processes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the adoption of innovation management applications (IMAs). Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on qualitative and quantitative evidence sourced from innovation development and commercialization functions including R&D, marketing, and administration at a university and technology transfer office. Findings – The paper contributes to literature by isolating determinants that affect the adoption of IMAs and their link to innovation process performance, confirming the importance of perceived usefulness and compatibility of IMAs to user's work styles. Originality/value – There is paucity of research concerning the adoption of IMAs which present unique challenges due to their idiosyncrasies. This study contributes by proposing an adoption model and validating it. It also links IMA adoption to innovation process performance, thereby filling a gap in extant technology adoption research.; Carolin Plewa, Indrit Troshani, Anthony Francis, Giselle Rampersad

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have become an everyday part of life. Communication networks within Australia link financial, educational, government and non-government services to Australian households. Both the 2001 and 2006 Australian Census data demonstrate that Indigenous Australians are 69% less likely to access the Internet at home than the rest of the Australian population. This study examines the factors affecting the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies in Australian Indigenous households and provides a plausible explanation as to why this gap exists. This study uses a multiple case study approach and draws on the Glaserian Grounded Theory Methodology to examine Indigenous household ICT adoption in a rural Indigenous community, an urban Indigenous community and a remote Indigenous community, to identify differences and commonalities of ICT adoption and non-adoption in diverse cultural and geographical locations across Australia. The theoretical lens draws on Pierre Bourdieu's theory of habitus to develop a practice perspective of household ICT adoption established through the habitus concepts of structures and agency or society and individual. The research establishes the existence of the Indigenous substantive field and postulates that new practices are formed with the intersection of the Indigenous field and external fields. Through the development of substantive fields this thesis develops a theoretical framework of Indigenous household ICT adoption. The findings suggest that a single model of ICT adoption can be applied to all Indigenous communities across Australia. The results could have considerable practical and policy significance.; Supervisor - Associate Professor Walter Fernandez; Yes

Within the context of international adoption, previous research has focused on parentchild attachment relationships and various aspects of the adoption process. However, less is known about other aspects of parent-child relationships (e.g., cohesion, conflict) within internationally adoptive families. Additionally, there is a need for research that explores both parent and child perceptions of the process of adoption - including pre- and post-adoptive factors - and its connection to the quality of parent-child relationships. This research utilized a qualitatively-oriented methodology to conduct separate, in-depth interviews with 10 adoptive Canadian mothers and their adopted Chinese children (aged 9 to 11 years). Results highlight parent and child reports of mainly strong, positive relationships. Several pre-adoption experiences are examined, including institutionalization, age at the time of adoption, and parental stress/expectations. A key finding concerns the link that adoptive parents perceive between the quality of their child's pre-adoptive care (i.e., mainly early institutionalized care) and the quality of their relationship. Interestingly, this link is perceived in two different ways - either as a challenge for the parent-child relationship or as a means to strengthen it. Post-adoption experiences are also explored...

The rise of socially targeted marketing suggests that decisions made by consumers can be predicted not only from their personal tastes and characteristics, but also from the decisions of people who are close to them in their networks. One obstacle to consider is that there may be several different measures for "closeness" that are appropriate, either through different types of friendships, or different functions of distance on one kind of friendship, where only a subset of these networks may actually be relevant. Another is that these decisions are often binary and more difficult to model with conventional approaches, both conceptually and computationally. To address these issues, we present a hierarchical model for individual binary outcomes that uses and extends the machinery of the auto-probit method for binary data. We demonstrate the behavior of the parameters estimated by the multiple network-regime auto-probit model (m-NAP) under various sensitivity conditions, such as the impact of the prior distribution and the nature of the structure of the network, and demonstrate on several examples of correlated binary data in networks of interest to Information Systems, including the adoption of Caller Ring-Back Tones, whose use is governed by direct connection but explained by additional network topologies.

On the frontier of biodiversity-rich tropical forests, how land is used has an important role in buffering the primary ecosystem. Unsustainable small-scale cattle farming endangers soil quality and degrades the landscape. Silvopasture is a type of agroforestry that provides both ecological and livelihood benefits. A number of projects have been implemented across the tropics to encourage silvopasture adoption, with varying success. This dissertation questions the reasons for variable outcomes among participants within these projects: what motivates smallholders to adopt innovative land-use practices, and what form of incentives may help to overcome obstacles and catalyse adoption. This dissertation contributes to the ongoing debate on payments for ecosystem services, specifically about their suitability and effectiveness. To understand what influences decisions to adopt sustainable land-use practices, I review systematically and quantitatively the literature on adoption predictors, and I empirically analyse participation and short-term adoption in a pilot project for planting fodder trees in the border of a protected forest in Chiapas, Mexico, using primary and secondary data. I focus on subjective perspectives and livelihood strategies of actual and potential participants as explanatory variables...

PURPOSE: The ubiquitous pace of innovation is spawning a multitude of information and communications technology (ICT) products that are both redefining the manner in which organisations operate and have the potential to engender organisations with strategic advantage through the adoption of these products. However, the challenges that this presents to organisations include developing agile strategies that cater for market instabilities, determining what technology to adopt and ensuring that the appropriate technology is adopted. Thus, the purpose of this article is to perform a critical analysis of ICT adoption in an attempt to determine the influence that the pace of technology has on organisations in their endeavour to stay abreast of their market environment and to develop a comprehensive ICT adoption framework. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This is exploratory research that concentrates on ICT adoption studied through the strategy-as-practice lens. Through critical analysis, the scientific literature was analysed to determine ICT adoption factors and to gain a better understanding of ICT adoption in the modern context. The principles of grounded theory were applied where repetitive reading of selected articles made it possible to identify factors that are associated with ICT adoption. FINDINGS: The study identified three key factors of ICT adoption...
