A modified UNIFAC group contribution model for the prediction of activity coefficients in associating solutions (A-UNIFAC) is applied to calculate phase equilibria in binary and ternary mixtures of associating and non-associating species, including alcohols, water, carboxylic acids, esters, alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons and alkyl chlorides. Self- and cross-association in these mixtures is adequately described by the definition of a single hydrogen-bonding group. The new model is able to give good predictions of vapor-liquid equilibria, liquid-liquid equilibria and infinite dilution activity coefficients, using a single set of group-interaction parameters.

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NS CL/P) is a complex disease in which heritability estimates vary widely depending on the population studied. To evaluate the importance of genetic contribution to NS CL/P in the Brazilian population, we conducted a study with 1,042 families from five different locations (Santarem, Fortaleza, Barbalha, Maceio, and Rio de Janeiro). We also evaluated the role of consanguinity and ethnic background. The proportion of familial cases varied significantly across locations, with the highest values found in Santarem (44%) and the lowest in Maceio (23%). Heritability estimates showed a higher genetic contribution to NS CL/P in Barbalha (85%), followed by Santarem (71%), Rio de Janeiro (70%), Fortaleza (64%), and Maceio (45%). Ancestry was not correlated with the occurrence of NS CL/P or with the variability in heritability. Only in Rio de Janeiro was the coefficient of inbreeding significantly larger in NS CL/P families than in the local population. Recurrence risk for the total sample was approximately 1.5-1.6%, varying according to the location studied (0.6-0.7% in Maceio to 2.2-2.8% in Barbalha). Our findings show that the degree of genetic contribution to NS CL/P varies according to the geographic region studied...

A shear connector, developed to be applied to a composite beam whose steel profile is a thin-walled box profile, displayed much greater flexibility than the conventional welded shear connector, leading to particular issues in the composite beam behaviour. One of these issues is the role played by friction at the interface between the steel profile and the slab which, under particular circumstances, may be relevant for serviceability limit states and also for ultimate limit states. The Brazilian and American Standards do not yet recognize the friction contribution in the behaviour of composite beams, though they recognize this contribution in composite slabs. This paper presents the experimental tests carried out with and without friction contribution on simple supported composite beams with flexible connectors and the numerical models developed to simulate the behaviour of the tested beams. The experimental tests revealed significant increases in strength and stiffness of the composite beam due to friction contribution and the comparisons between numerical and experimental results displayed good correlations.

Based on steel strains recorded during shake table tests of six wall specimens, the effect and contribution of steel reinforcement to peak shear strength and displacement capacity of low-rise concrete walls is assessed and discussed. The experimental program included four variables such as wall geometry, concrete type, web steel ratio and type of web reinforcement. Wall response was assessed through effective steel strains in vertical reinforcement, efficiency factors of wall reinforcement, contribution of web horizontal reinforcement to wall shear strength, and the effect of type of web reinforcement to wall displacement.

Several research has shown that caffeine ingestion (1, 2, 7 trimethylxanthine) increases performance. Due to these findings and their removal from the list of banned substances in 2004 by the international anti doping agency, athletes of various sports have widely used caffeine in order to increase performance during competitions. Studies have shown an increase in performance in high-intensity exercise after caffeine ingestion. The increase in performance with the use of caffeine in this type of performance, seems to be related to increasing the anaerobic contribution . On the other hand, depletion of glycogen stores appear to reduce performance during high intensity exercise. This reduction according studies appears to be due to a reduction of the anaerobic contribution. More recently, research has been conducted in order to investigate whether supplementation of carbohydrate with the addition of caffeine provides the additional effect on performance. Thus, the goal of this dissertation was: 1) review the main findings about the effects on performance in time trial and what the mechanisms involved in the combined supplementation of caffeine and carbohydrate (review article). 2) verify if intake of caffeine can reverse the impairment in performance and anaerobic contribution caused by depletion of muscle glycogen during 4000m cycling time trial (results article). In the studies reviewed in the review article found that most studies with combined ingestion of caffeine and carbohydrate showed a further increase in performance. However...

Notional accounts are designed to mimic a defined contribution plan, where the pension depends on contributions and investment returns. (For this reason, they are sometimes called notional, defined-contribution schemes). Pension contributions are tracked in accounts which earn a rate of return. However, in notional accounts, the return that contributions earn is a notional one, set by the government, not the product of investment returns in the markets.

The concept of nonfinancial (notional) defined contribution (NDC) was born in the early 1990s and implemented from the mid-1990s in a number of countries. This innovative unfunded individual account scheme emerged and created high hopes at a time when the world seemed to have been locked into a stalemate between making piecemeal reforms of ailing traditional pay- as-you-go defined benefit schemes and introducing prefunded financial account schemes. Nonfinancial (notional) defined contribution (NDC) plans are designed to eliminate the work disincentives and nontransparent redistributions of defined benefit (DB) social security schemes without the transition costs and risk shifting that occurs in the context of a switch to a funded defined contribution (DC) scheme. To a large extent, they sweep away the special privileges that, intentionally or inadvertently, accrue to various groups in traditional schemes and pay everyone in accordance with his or her own contributions. However, not surprisingly, these new provisions will have different effects on diverse population subgroups...

The main goal of any pension system is to ensure that members receive an adequate pension income when they retire. Whilst traditional defined benefit (DB) pension plans set out what that pension income will be in advance and then strive to deliver it, the growing number of defined contribution (DC) plans accumulates a sum of assets which can then be turned into a pension income on retirement. However, the amount of this retirement income is not set in advance. In the absence of a proper regulatory framework, feature n DC plans leads to a focus by not only pension providers, but also regulators and pension plan members themselves on the short-term accumulation of pension assets rather than the longer-term goal of securing an adequate retirement income. The paper is organized as follows: chapter two discusses the origins of risks based supervision and discusses the role of capital in the alignment of incentives in financial institutions. Chapter three discusses the concept of risk based supervision for pension funds...

Defined contribution pension systems have faced criticism in the wake of the financial and economic crisis for not delivering adequate and sustainable pension incomes at retirement. Much of the problem has centered around the misalignment of pension fund management companies and the interests of pension fund members, with the focus on short-term volatility rather than delivering adequate pension income over the long term. Although pension fund supervisors in emerging economies have attempted to correct for these market failures, they have not focused sufficiently on the ultimate long-term pension income objective. The paper suggests that in order to have a meaningful impact on future pensions, the supervision of defined contribution pension systems needs to take a more proactive role in minimizing pension risk. This objective would require ensuring that investment risks are aligned with the probability of achieving a target pension at retirement age. The paper also suggests that a proper institutional design of the pension fund industry and intensive use of market surveillance are efficient tools for dealing with most of the operational risks of funded pension fund schemes in emerging economies.

Aromatic plants have been used worldwide in human diet to improve the flavor and taste of meals or as herbal infusions. Beyond the culinary purposes, these plants are also used for their medicinal purposes, as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic and anti-carcinogenic, among others. In the present study, 39 species of condiments and/or herbal infusions were assessed in order to provide scientific information concerning their nutritional value and energetic contribution; furthermore, the fatty acids composition was also evaluated. Carbohydrates were the most abundant compounds in the condiments that also revealed a varied range of sugars with fructose, glucose, sucrose and trehalose detected in all the condiments. In respect to fatty acids, PUFA were prevalent with the great contribution of linoleic and α-linolenic acids among the different 32 detected fatty acids. The herbal infusions revealed low quantities of sugars with most of the plants revealing fructose, glucose and sucrose. In a general way, the energetic value of the condiments and herbal infusions was very low and these plants revealed good nutritional properties that make them suitable for a balanced and diversified low caloric diet. The results obtained in the present systematization study will allow the readers to perform easy and quick comparisons among these different aromatic plants regarding nutritional purposes.

Despite the purported surge in internal migration following the 2004 enlargement of the European Union, data from the 2006 European Union Survey of Income and Living Conditions show that internal migrants are a relatively small share of the European Union's population. Depending on the exact definition used, only about 1 to 2 percent of the population of European Union-13 countries (members prior to the 2004 enlargement, not including Germany and Luxembourg) were born in other European Union countries, while the corresponding share for European Union-4 countries (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia) is even lower. By contrast, about 6 percent of the population of European Union-13 countries was born outside the European Union. On examining the demographic and socio-economic background of the migrant population (both from within as well as outside the European Union), this paper finds that migrants tend to include a concentration of both low as well as highly educated workers. Both sets of migrants uniformly contribute to raising the working-age population of receiving countries. Using data on average incomes and taxes paid and benefits received by migrant and non-migrant households...

Pensions and social insurance programs are an integral part of any social protection system. Their dual objectives are to prevent a sharp decline in income and protect against poverty resulting from old age, disability, or death. The critical role of pensions for protection, prevention, and promotion was reiterated and expanded in the new World Bank 2012-2022 social protection strategy. This new strategy reviews the success and challenges of the past decade or more, during which time the World Bank became a main player in the area of pensions. But more importantly, the strategy takes the three key objectives for pensions under the World Bank's conceptual framework coverage, adequacy, and sustainability and asks how these objectives and the inevitable difficult balance between them can best be achieved. The ongoing focus on closing the coverage gap with social pensions and the new outreach to explore the role of matching contributions to address coverage and/or adequacy is part of this strategy. This comprehensive anthology on nonfinancial defined contribution (NDC) pension schemes is part and parcel of the effort to explore and document the working of this new system or reform option and its ability to balance these three key objectives. This innovative...

The previous decade has been one of pension reform throughout the world. In high income countries, the driving force has been the threat that current systems will become unaffordable in coming decades, with demographic developments presenting a major risk. In another setting, countries in the process of transition from a command, to a market economy are confronted with the challenge of introducing a public pension system that will provide social security in old age, but that also supports the fundamentals of a market economy. In the latter sense, it is important to examine carefully the experiences of developed market economies. Even in these countries, the driving force behind reform is demographic change and affordability. In a third setting, middle and lower-middle income countries are faced with the question of what system will best serve the interests of their specific country goals for the future. In all of these settings "NDC"-non-financial defined contribution-pension schemes have been on the agenda in discussions of possible options. Sweden is one of the few countries to have implemented an NDC scheme in the 1990s...

The recent financial crisis is challenging the reform approach to mandated pension a scheme that has emerged over recent decades across the world. This reform approach is characterized by a move toward multi-pillar pension systems and includes the creation or extension of a mandatory funded pillar with defined contribution design. The rationale and viability of such a pillar is contingent on an enabling environment and the delivery of high risk-adjusted net rates of return that beat the natural benchmark, which is the internal rate of return that an unfunded mandated scheme is able to achieve. Two key aspects of mandated and funded defined contribution schemes have been under discussion and investigation since dedicated pension funds were created: (a) the high fees levied by privately organized pension funds and the consequence for the net rate of return; and (b) the investment products of these funds and their capability to address the investment risks and to deliver the expected retirement income in a life-cycle context. To this end...

This paper studies the effect of experience, the inter-temporal strategy and the group size as the possible explanations to the highest levels of contribution to equilibrium in a game of public goods. All these variables together allow capturing the effect of the group membership; keeping in mind that the more information collected about its members' behavior, the greater the levels of contribution. Therefore, treatment was implemented in which subjects interact in a group with permanent members (partners), and other treatment where the group changes randomly in each round (strangers). In addition, crossed treatments were carried out, in which first stage partners or strangers??? status is surprisingly changed in the second stage of the experiment. Groups of four or five members were considered to analyze the effect of the group size. Results show that the average contribution is positive and gradually converges to the Nash equilibrium as repetitions increase. Although there is evidence in favor of the intertemporal strategy, it critically depends on the stability of the group's composition. This paper studies common intraday jumps and relative contribution of these common jumps in realized correlation between individual stocks and market index, using high-frequency price data. In introducing stochastic models for stock price returns, we show that discrete time model (binomial tree) converges to geometric brownian motion in continuous time. We find that the common jumps significantly contribute in realized correlation at different threshold cut-offs and both common jumps and realized correlation are relatively consistent across time period including financial crisis. However, we observe a statistically significant difference in realized correlation and suggestive difference in contribution of common jumps between financial and food industry. In addition, we find a weak, positive relationship between relative contribution of common jumps and realized correlation, when we further sample high-frequency data into a year. We also observe that the volatility index and market index reveal the strongest relationship.; Honors thesis

The IPCC (2013) gives simplified formulas to compute the radiative forcing (RF) resulting from the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gases (AGG): carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and halocarbons. These formulas allow to compute the global RF of these gases relative to their pre-industrial (1750 A.D.) concentrations, and are used in this work to estimate the contribution of Mexico to the global RF by its emissions of CO2 (the most significant of the AGG), CH4 and N2O during the period 1990-2011, which are reported in the Inventario Nacional de Emisiones de Gases de Efecto Invernadero (National Inventory of Greenhouse Gases Emissions, INEGEI) (INECC, 2013). In comparison, by 2010 the national emissions per capita of Argentina, Spain and the United States were 108.8, 110.8 and 327.0% of the Mexican emissions, respectively, in units of equivalent CO2. Mexico's CO2 emissions retained in the atmosphere during 1990-2011 amount to 4 624 457 Gg; they are higher than those of Spain and Argentina together, and represent 1/12 of the USA contribution. Mexico's contribution is 1.47% of the global RF due to C0(2), with a similar proportion than Spain and Argentina, but a smaller fraction compared to that of the USA (1/15). The main uncertainties of our computations for Mexico's contribution to the global RF come from national emissions; the INEGEI indicates that the emissions considered for the calculation of uncertainties represent 89% of the total emissions of the inventory...
