Pós-graduação em Ciência da Informação - FFC; The research presents as its central theme the study of the bibliographic record conversion process. The object of study is framed by an understanding of analogic bibliographic record conversion to the Bibliograhpic MARC21 format, based on a syntactic and semantic analysis of records described according to descriptive metadata structure standards and content standards. The thesis in this research is that the syntactic and semantic principles of bibliographic records, defined by description and visualization cataloguing schemes, present in the descriptive metadata structure standards and content standards, determine the bibliographic record conversion process to the MARC21 Bibliographic Format. In the light of this, the purpose of this research is to develop a theoretical study of the syntax and semantics of bibliographic records, grounded in Linguistic theories of Saussure and Hjelmslev, which can underlie analogic bibliographic record conversion to the MARC21 Bibliographic Format using a computational interpreter. To this end, the general aim was to develop a theoretical-conceptual model of the syntax and semantics of bibliographic records, based on saussurean and hjelmslevian linguistic studies of human language manifestations...

The processing system used in the UCLA Biomedical Library is modest in size and still under development. Its origins date back to a batch mode serials control system begun in the mid-1960s. This was converted to an on-line system which currently has modules for check-in, updating and retrieval, claims, bindery preparation, and invoice information. Titles can be retrieved at the terminal by search of any word in the title, by subject heading, language, country of publication, and type of publication. The system is adaptable to network use and at present is shared with one other library. To the serials system has been added a computer-assisted cataloging and card production system. The latter utilizes serials nucleus software as well as design for data input and data storage. In-house listings and coding procedures overlap in a general way. Work is under way on further integration of the two processing subsystems and a feasibility study has been completed for addition of a subsystem for acquisitions which will combine and adapt features of the other two; for example, information retrieval characteristics from both, catalog coding and programs for acceptance of data, serials programs for claims, and other output programs. Cost benefits of the subsystems are described and discussed.

This present work is a proposal for cataloging the collection of photographs of the Escola Municipal Professor Moacir Monclar Brandão, in Goiania - GO. Therefore we realized a literature review and it was necessary to resort to various authors who deal about the topic to the themes: history of photography, cataloging, image, description, image, audiovisual document; thematic and conceptual analysis of photographic images, treatment and technical concepts of conservation, preservation and restoration. For preparation of the card catalog was adopted the Code of AACR2 cataloging (2002), which rules the standardization of cataloging the international aid data processing in conjunction with models of catalog cards surveyed in cultural institutions (museums and center documentation), that we visited to verify the methodology used to create this model of the card catalog of photographs. Based on this catalog card, the aim is it corresponds to the needs of recovery. This work is a case study and is classified as exploratory and applied with a qualitative approach.; O presente trabalho trata de uma proposta de catalogação da coleção de fotografias da Escola Municipal Professor Moacir Monclar Brandão de Goiânia – GO. Yield mapping is increasingly used in agricultural management. The distributions produced from the majority of these datasets are non-normal and can be misleading if used in the decision making process. Numerous studies over the last 25 years, published in various formats, have highlighted the sources of errors that contribute to this non-normality and have proposed a variety of post-processing methods to reduce their effect. A comprehensive cataloging of the types of errors present and methods used to remove them as well as the approaches to and effects of post-processing error removal is needed. This review identifies four types of yield mapping measurement errors: issues associated with harvesting dynamics of the combine harvester, the continuous measurement of moisture and yield, the accuracy of positional data and errors caused by the harvester operator. Methods to remove errors range from simple thresholds to complex routines that incorporate harvest position and local yield variation. The benefits of applying filters have focused on the removal of erroneous yield variation based on simple descriptive statistics, the creation of yield distributions that show greater normality and the decrease of the nugget-variance relationship and prediction variance estimated in yield map interpolation. Publication of these parameters should accompany the interpolated yield map for both unprocessed and post-processed datasets to provide an insight into the reliability of the collected measurements and the effectiveness of the routines implemented. Examples from commercial growers in Western Australia are used to reinforce the review’s findings and highlight the potential for extensions to current methods to remove errors associated with harvester speed...

After ten years of experimentation in computer-assisted cataloging, the Washington University School of Medicine Library has decided to join the Ohio College Library Center network. The history of the library's work preceding this decision is reviewed. The data processing equipment and computers that have permitted librarians to explore different ways of presenting cataloging information are discussed. Certain cataloging processes are facilitated by computer manipulation and printouts, but the intellectual cataloging processes such as descriptive and subject cataloging are not. Networks and shared bibliographic data bases show promise of eliminating the intellectual cataloging for one book by more than one cataloger. It is in this area that future developments can be expected.

Studying coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in coronagraph data can be challenging due to their diffuse structure and transient nature, compounded by the variations in their dynamics, morphology, and frequency of occurrence. The large amounts of data available from missions like the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) make manual cataloging of CMEs tedious and prone to human error, and so a robust method of detection and analysis is required and often preferred. A new coronal image processing catalog called CORIMP has been developed in an effort to achieve this, through the implementation of a dynamic background separation technique and multiscale edge detection. These algorithms together isolate and characterise CME structure in the field-of-view of the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) onboard SOHO. CORIMP also applies a Savitzky-Golay filter, along with quadratic and linear fits, to the height-time measurements for better revealing the true CME speed and acceleration profiles across the plane-of-sky. Here we present a sample of new results from the CORIMP CME catalog, and directly compare them with the other automated catalogs of Computer Aided CME Tracking (CACTus) and Solar Eruptive Events Detection System (SEEDS)...

Satellite Tracking of People (STOP) tracks thousands of GPS-enabled devices 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. With locations captured for each device every minute, STOP servers receive tens of millions of points each day. In addition to cataloging these points in real-time, STOP must also respond to questions from customers such as, "What devices of mine were at this location two months ago?" They often then broaden their question to one such as, "Which of my devices have ever been at this location?" The processing requirements necessary to answer these questions while continuing to process inbound data in real-time is non-trivial. To meet this demand, STOP developed Adaptive Partitioning to provide a cost-effective and highly available hardware platform for the geographical and time-spatial indexing capabilities necessary for responding to customer data requests while continuing to catalog inbound data in real-time.

The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is a 5000 deg2 grizY survey reaching characteristic photometric depths of 24th magnitude (10 sigma) and enabling accurate photometry and morphology of objects ten times fainter than in SDSS. Preparations for DES have included building a dedicated 3 deg2 CCD camera (DECam), upgrading the existing CTIO Blanco 4m telescope and developing a new high performance computing (HPC) enabled data management system (DESDM). The DESDM system will be used for processing, calibrating and serving the DES data. The total data volumes are high (~2PB), and so considerable effort has gone into designing an automated processing and quality control system. Special purpose image detrending and photometric calibration codes have been developed to meet the data quality requirements, while survey astrometric calibration, coaddition and cataloging rely on new extensions of the AstrOmatic codes which now include tools for PSF modeling, PSF homogenization, PSF corrected model fitting cataloging and joint model fitting across multiple input images. The DESDM system has been deployed on dedicated development clusters and HPC systems in the US and Germany. An extensive program of testing with small rapid turn-around and larger campaign simulated datasets has been carried out. The system has also been tested on large real datasets...

In this project a functional prototype of web based documentation, search, cataloging, and organizational tool was created to demonstrate a potentially powerful aid to the Division of Planning. For purposes of discussion this utility will be termed the DUROS, the Documentation Utility for Referencing, Organization, and Search. In conclusion, DUROS represents a simple but powerful utility that can be developed and implemented in the near term with relatively low cost when compared to large scale data warehouse efforts.
