Strategic management as an academic field of study has spanned over four decades. As an interdisciplinary subject that enjoys concurrent contributions by allied disciplines such as economics and social science, numerous industries have benefited from applying tools and concepts developed within strategic management that are subsequently tailored to match their specific contexts. Strangely, although postured as one of the oldest and largest industries, the construction industry has largely chosen to omit the relevance of the subject in daily business operations. This is especially true in the United States, compared to the British who have embarked on such studies as early as the 1970s. Recent literatures have commented on inadequate management knowledge and systems perspective of civil engineers as they rise through the ranks and shoulder higher responsibilities of management. This is manifested by lackluster performance and failure of several international construction firms sampled in this research, the causes of which were least attributed to technical engineering issues and project management aspects. This doctoral research aims to bridge the knowledge gap in strategy and formulates a conceptual model suited for construction. Shales compose the major part of sedimentary rocks and cover most of hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs. Shale materials are probably one of the most complex natural composites, and their mechanical properties are still an enigma that has deceived many decoding attempts from experimental and theoretical sides. Advanced experimental techniques, such as nanoindentation, and theoretical microporomechanics make it possible today to break such a heterogeneous material down to a scale where physical chemistry meets mechanics, to extract intrinsic material properties that do not change from one material to another, and to upscale the intrinsic material behavior from the submicroscale to the macroscale of engineering application. This thesis identifies material invariant properties of shales by investigating the elastic properties of shales at multiple scales. We combine new experimental data of shale microstructure and mechanical properties, with nanoindentation analysis and microporomechanics. This leads to the development of a novel multiscale upscaling model for shale poroelasticity. The proposed model relies on a few quantities that can be easily obtained from mineralogy and porosity data. This thesis surveys the use of sensors and sensor networks in monitoring civil structures, with particular emphasis on the monitoring of bridges and highways using fiber optic sensors. Following a brief review of the most widespread form of civil infrastructure inspection -- visual inspection -- the thesis describes the anatomy, mechanisms, and types of fiber optic sensors and characterizes the tradeoffs involved in choosing between fiber-optic and conventional sensor technologies. The thesis then presents a survey of contributions to this field, followed by a discussion of deployed applications of fiber-optic sensors, many of them in North America. The latter portion of the thesis first briefly discusses the emerging technology of wireless sensor networks and then presents an abbreviated case study comparing the costs and time required to deploy a fiber optic system to traditional visual inspection on the same structure. The case study suggests that the fiber optic sensors are a cost-effective technology, particularly when indirect savings are considered. It is well known that irregular topography can substantially affect the amplitude and frequency characteristics of seismic motion. Macroseismic observations of destructive earthquakes often show higher damage intensity at the tops of hills, ridges and canyons than at lower elevations and on flat areas. Systematic seismic motion amplification over convex topographies has been confirmed by instrumental studies and also predicted by theoretical and numerical simulations of wave diffraction. Nonetheless, for the most part, the former have been limited to weak motion data and the later have treated topographic asperities as simple geometric irregularities on the surface of homogeneous, linearly elastic halfspaces. Despite the qualitative agreement between theory and observations on topography effects, there is still much uncertainty concerning the actual severity of amplification near topographic irregularities, inasmuch as predictive methods are still lacking on the quantitative aspects of seismic amplification near such features. Focusing of seismic rays by convex topographies does play a significant role as shown theoretically, yet it is not the only physical phenomenon involved. Rock fracture pattern description is important in civil engineering, engineering geology, and petroleum engineering. Deformability, strength, and stability of a rock mass as well as fluid flow through it are all influenced by fractures. Rock fracture patterns normally cannot be observed completely so different approaches have been used to model them. Geometric models, which use probabilistic processes usually not or only indirectly related to mechanics, are often used for this purpose. Mechanics-based models, on the other hand, can only describe simpler fracture patterns. This research will improve on fracture pattern modeling capabilities, specifically for layer-perpendicular joints in sedimentary rock. Layer-perpendicular joints in sedimentary rock represent relatively simple fracture patterns that are usually confined within a competent layer bounded by ductile non-jointing layers. Field and laboratory studies in the literature suggest that their spacing is related to layer thickness and follows some probability distribution. Laboratory results in the literature also suggest that for a given layer thickness, a limiting joint spacing exists (i.e., joint saturation); this is not apparent in field data.; (cont.) Existing models for layer-perpendicular joints in sedimentary rock consider some but not all of these aspects. Two new models are developed to better consider them. The first model (flaw model) is mechanics-based and relies on tensile stress and tensile strength submodels to generate joint patterns. Tensile strength can be correlated or uncorrelated. Compressive stress and interface slip saturation mechanisms are also implemented. The second model (rejection procedure) is a faster and largely probabilistic approach that generates joint patterns from a continuously updated probability density function but this function is assumed to depend only on tensile stress. Understanding and shaping the relationship between supply chain management and the natural environment is critical not only to human health and the environment, but to the future success of business. While the cumulative environmental impacts of industrial production are best addressed at the supply chain level, little research has connected the overall context of supply chain management, including the characteristics of environmental pressures and market drivers, to a general approach for developing operational supply chain processes that may deliver environmental and economic performance improvements. Findings from a series of semi-structured interviews indicate that there are four sources of environmental pressure currently affecting supply chain management in unique ways. These include regulations, customer demands, resources, and ethical responsibility. Corporations that are better able to identify and understand these impacts will be better positioned to address them strategically. A framework of supply chain environmental excellence is presented to illustrate how corporations may integrate environmental operating models, operational objectives, and new supply chain processes into a comprehensive corporate strategy.; (cont.) History states that architects and engineers rarely operate in a peaceful environment as each have their own specific agendas to fulfill. The architect appeals to the plastic form of a building before tending to its structural behavior while the engineer tends towards the opposite. This thesis focuses on the transportation sector and its role in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and conventional pollutant emissions. Specifically, it analyzes the potential for hydrogen based transportation, introducing this technological option within a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the economy. The transportation sector accounts for an important part of CO2 emissions and analyses that have imposed carbon limits on the economy have shown relatively limited reductions in transportation emissions with current technology, thus the interest in technological options that would make it economic to reduce emissions. The US Federal government has been particularly focused on developing fuel cell technology for vehicles that, when powered by hydrogen, would offer a technological solution that potentially eliminates emissions of both CO2 and other conventional pollutants from the transportation sector. This work examines the economic conditions under which such a technology might successfully compete in the market. Recent developments have occurred that limit the effectiveness of conventional strength-based structural design. First, there has been a trend towards designing more flexible structures that require increased emphasis on structural motion and serviceability. Next, motion has become more important for the design of new facilities that house very sensitive manufacturing and operating equipment. This equipment can only operate properly under extremely low movement conditions. Third, advances in material science and engineering have led to developing materials with significantly increased strengths, but the stiffness of these materials have not increased at the same rate. Motion parameters control the design for these high-strength materials. Finally, recent earthquake responses have shown that repair costs from structural damage due to inelastic deformation that was much greater than anticipated. This has led to a trend in reducing the reliance on inelastic deformation in the structure to dissipate energy, and designing control of the response with other energy dissipation and absorption devices. This thesis investigated the potential for environmental management techniques to contribute to malaria vector control in Niger, with a case study on Banizoumbou village in western Niger. Numerical modeling was used to simulate habitat modifications in the form of leveling a topographic depression, ploughing the land surface to enhance infiltration and providing barriers to surface runoff on hillslopes. The hydrologic model described by Bomblies et al. (2008) was used for the modeling investigation, calibrated using environmental observations obtained in Banizoumbou for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. The modeling investigation showed that leveling of topographic depressions could reduce the persistence time of a pool to less than the time needed for establishment of mosquito breeding, approximately 7 days. Increasing the surface soil permeability by ploughing also reduced the persistence time of the pool but was not as effective as leveling. Therefore leveling is the recommended intervention for pools of a small to intermediate size, while ploughing would be recommended for large pools where leveling would require too much work to implement. Interception of hillslope runoff using a barrier was demonstrated to be the most effective way to prevent a pool from becoming breeding habitat. However...

In developing countries, growth frequently parallels increasing motorization rates, and visions of mobility are often centered on the private automobile as the most flexible form of personal transportation and a symbol of increasing wealth. The pursuit of mobility in this form has severe social, environmental, and economic consequences, some of which can be mitigated by the promotion of alternative modes of transportation Cycling and other forms of human-powered transportation have benign environmental effects, improve physical health, and can positively affect the psychology of people who, by choosing this mode, are more active and spend time outside and engaged in their environment. Given these benefits, it not surprising that some medium-sized, developing cities are including cycling in their transportation plans.These cities experience significant barriers, however, in promoting cycling as a form of sustainable transportation. Much of the challenge involves effectively utilizing planning processes and tools, which are often imported and applied in a context where they were not designed to be used, to elicit more sustainable transportation behavior in the midst of rapid change. An experimental study was performed to determine the environmental durability of the adhesive bond between fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and concrete. The study specifically focused on freeze-thaw cycling exposure of such bonds and their ultimate strength prior and after the environmental exposure. To investigate the bond strength 84 single lap shear specimens were manufactured utilizing two different types of carbon FRP pultrued strips and three different structural adhesives for total of three FRP/adhesive combinations. Two types of concrete substrate were used: regular high strength and air-entrained concrete. The specimens were freeze-thaw cycled for three different numbers of cycles using two different freeze-thaw procedures. First freeze-thaw procedure used chloride solution (3% NaCI) as its medium; the second procedure utilized tap water. This main program was complemented by the same freeze-thaw cycling of pull-off specimens of the adhesively bonded system and dumbbell tension specimens of the three adhesives. Coefficients of thermal expansion of the three structural adhesives were also experimentally measured. Results show that the ultimate strength of the adhesive bond between FRP and concrete deteriorates measurably during freeze-thaw cycling in chloride solution. The objective of my thesis is to analyze the economic impact on agriculture production from changes in climate and tropospheric ozone, and related policy interventions. The analysis makes use of the Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model, a computable general equilibrium model of the world economy and crop yield results from the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM), a biogeochemical model of terrestrial vegetation. I disaggregated the original EPPA model to capture the dynamic behaviors of crops, livestock and forestry within the agriculture sector. Further calibration was done to validate projections on future food shares according to Engel's Law. Results from AIDADS (An Implicit Direct Additive Demand System) were used to adjust the model, as the EPPA Agriculture Model was implemented using CES (Constant Elasticity of Substitution) consumption function that, other things equal, keeps the food share constant as income grows. My research shows that the direct effects of environmental change on yields are substantially moderated in terms of production effects as a result of crop sector adaptations and reallocation of resources within the economy. However, costs (or benefits) resulting from reallocation of resources show up as losses (or gains) in aggregate economic consumption. Over the past six years, the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's Master of Engineering program has undertaken various projects involved with the design and implementation of a wide range of household drinking water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) systems. Projects have been conducted in Nepal, Haiti, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Peru, with the current year's project team focused on Kenya. These individual and team projects have brought the overall HWTS program to a point where program implementation practices are now of great interest. The primary objective of this thesis is to generate program implementation and selection tools to aid in the implementation of HWTS systems for local communities in developing nations. The tools generated are presented as two separate components: (1) a HWTS implementation organization survey and (2) a HWTS technology selection tool. An interactive, online geographic information system (GIS) was developed to enhance the involvement of stakeholders in the public participation processes of site selection issues in the marine environment. Displaying educational material and interactive maps of relevant data, this new tool allows users to input personal preferences for the criteria they value in the siting decision, and produces a map showing the most and least suitable sites according to the user's weighting of the criteria. Current decision-making processes focus on finding an optimum solution from a number of alternatives using an objective analysis of the criteria, but are often inaccessible to many stakeholders, and do not consider the fairness of the outcome to the stakeholders. This tool is intended to educate stakeholders and enhance their involvement in the public decision-making process. To demonstrate the interactive, online GIS concept, a website called eSite was assembled, using as its case study the hypothetical issue of siting marine reserves within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Marine resource protection is a controversial issue with many stakeholders in New England, where fishing in the Gulf of Maine has a long history, and human activities have had significant impacts on the marine environment. With monitoring of different system components becoming common, increasingly the limits posed on participants in the energy and environment system, from federal and state governments to policy analysts, is not the lack of reliably measured data, but the inaccessibility and poor usability of the data that is available. These factors are complicated by the nature of the system that is constantly changing and which holds a diverse and sometimes competing group of stakeholders. This thesis makes the case for smart data management and application integration using XML and Web services technologies for government agencies involved in the energy and environment system. The features of a service-oriented IT architecture (simple, robust, heterogeneous, distributed) are elements lacking from the current system of data acquisition and dissemination. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Markets Division is taken as a case study.
