A engenharia simultânea e os sistemas de gerenciamento de dados de produto(PDM), apesar de serem uma ajuda preciosa para que as empresas enfrentem as novas condições de sobrevivência no mercado atual, não são muito conhecidos. Além disso, existem poucos trabalhos científicos relacionados à implantação e ao auxílio deste tipo sistema no gerenciamento de dados em ambiente de engenharia simultânea. O processo de desenvolvimento do produto (PDP) tem assumido uma importância crescente na indústria devido ao aumento da complexidade de produtos e processos de produção, bem como às pressões para o atendimento dos requisitos do cliente em prazos cada vez menores. A Engenharia Simultânea (ES) é uma abordagem que surgiu em resposta a estas mudanças. Foi inicialmente desenvolvida na indústria na manufatura, a partir da organização simultânea de diferentes funções envolvidas no desenvolvimento de novos produtos. A aplicação da engenharia simultânea na construção civil tem sido estudada por acadêmicos, principalmente em empreendimentos que possuem grande incerteza e elevado grau de interdependência entre as atividades. Neste contexto, a falta de integração entre projeto e produção e a ineficácia do planejamento e controle do processo de projeto têm sido apontadas como importantes lacunas de conhecimento. This classical way to manage product development processes for massive production seems to be changing: high pressure for cost reduction, higher quality standards, markets reaching for innovation lead to the necessity of new tools for development control. Into this, and learning from the automotive and aerospace industries factories from other segments are starting to understand and apply manufacturing and assembly oriented projects to ease the task of generate goods and from this obtain at least a part of the expected results. This paper is intended to demonstrate the applicability of the concepts of Concurrent Engineering and DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) in the development of products and parts for the White Goods industry in Brazil (major appliances as refrigerators, cookers and washing machines), showing one case concerning the development and releasing of a component. Finally is demonstrated in a short term how was reached a solution that could provide cost savings and reduction on the time to delivery using those techniques.

Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia Industrial; Ao longo dos últimos anos foi possível verificar um aumento substancial na procura de elevadores elétricos no mercado da construção. Este aumento deveu-se principalmente ao fato de o Estado incentivar os construtores civis, através da concessão de benefícios fiscais, a escolher equipamentos de baixo consumo. O fato de a Grupnor ter de alguma forma menosprezado a evolução nos sistemas elétricos de elevadores, teve como consequência uma incapacidade crescente de se tornar competitiva nesta área (tendo sempre apostado mais nos elevadores hidráulicos). Essa falta de competitividade levou a que em alguns casos tenham sido efetuadas vendas abaixo do preço de custo para a empresa apenas para segurar e manter uma boa relação com determinados clientes habituais. Este projeto teve como objetivo encontrar soluções para a melhoria da competitividade da empresa em estudo mais especificamente no segmento de mercado dos elevadores elétricos. Product and manufacturing system design are the core issues in product development and dominate the profitability of a company. In order to assess and optimize the product and manufacturing system design, an objective evaluation framework is needed. Despite the many existing tools for product and manufacturing system design, there is a missing link between the product design and the production performances under system variability. The goal of the thesis is to explore and understand the interactions among part design and tolerancing, processes and system variability, and system control decision, then provide an integrated model to assess the total cost in a system. This model will be used to aid part design, tolerancing, batching, as well as strategy analysis in process improvement. A two-stage modeling approach is used to tackle the problem: quality prediction and production prediction. The quality prediction model projects the process variations into the output quality variations at each manufacturing stage, then predict the yield rate from the stochastic behavior of the variations and the tolerance. Integrated concurrent engineering is a method for rapid conceptual design. Previous study has suggested that integration of system-level optimization techniques into integrated concurrent engineering can benefit the design process. In order to confirm and strengthen these results further study was carried out. A two-stage liquid rocket software model was created to serve as a complex multi-disciplinary design problem. Several design session trials were run with the goal of optimizing the rocket in performance and cost. Some design teams used optimization along with integrated concurrent engineering, while others only used integrated concurrent engineering. Construction projects are uncertain and complex in nature. One of the major driving forces that may account for these characteristics is iterative cycles caused by errors and changes. Errors and changes worsen project performance and consequently, cause schedule and cost overruns to be prevalent. In particular, these iterative cycles are more detrimental when large-scale concurrent design and construction is applied. In an effort to address these issues, this research proposes Dynamic Planning and control Methodology (DPM) as a robust design and construction planning methodology for large-scale concurrent design and construction. The proposed DPM is composed of: 1) an error and change management framework that enables understanding of the construction processes associated with errors and changes and how they affect construction performance; 2) a proactive buffering strategy for reducing sensitivity to iterative error and changes cycles; 3) a System Dynamics-based construction project model which provides policy guidelines for the planning and control of projects; and; (cont.) 4) a web-based error and change management system, which supports coordination of errors and changes among contractors and design professionals without hardware and software compatibility issues. Vibrotactile displays have been created to aid vision or hearing through the sense of touch. These displays communicate with the user to provide information. The focus of this thesis was to determine how concurrent activity affects vibrotactile signal recognition. An overall accuracy recognition rate of 90% or greater was desired from each of the signals in the each of the tasks. The first experiment asked subjects to wear the tactile display and walk while responding to signals. The results indicated that most of the subjects were able to recognize the patterns. The overall mean correct response rate was 92% and then when the subjects were asked to jog, they correctly identified the patterns 91% of the time. After determining the success rates from the first experiment, a second set of subjects were asked to concentrate on an internet game while responding to signals. The data from this experiment had an overall mean correct response rate of 93%. The results from this experiment further indicate that subjects can still receive communications while participating in other activities. The results also lead to specific conclusions about the patterns used and their ability to be identified with concurrent activity where some patterns are more easily received than others. Pitch differences between concurrent sounds are important cues used in auditory scene analysis and also play a major role in music perception. To investigate the neural codes underlying these perceptual abilities, we recorded from single fibers in the cat auditory nerve in response to two concurrent harmonic complex tones with missing fundamentals and equal-amplitude harmonics. We investigated the efficacy of rate-place and interspike-interval codes to represent both pitches of the two tones, which had fundamental frequency (FO) ratios of 15/14 or 11/9. We relied on the principle of scaling invariance in cochlear mechanics to infer the spatiotemporal response patterns to a given stimulus from a series of measurements made in a single fiber as a function of FO. Templates created by a peripheral auditory model were used to estimate the FOs of double complex tones from the inferred distribution of firing rate along the tonotopic axis. This rate-place representation was accurate for FOs above about 900 Hz. Surprisingly, rate-based FO estimates were accurate even when the two-tone mixture contained no resolved harmonics, so long as some harmonics were resolved prior to mixing. We also extended methods used previously for single complex tones to estimate the FOs of concurrent complex tones from interspike-interval distributions pooled over the tonotopic axis. With the revolution of the construction industry in Brazil, it becomes necessary to promote its improvement and renovation. This sector in its current state has a segmentation between the stages of a project and its execution, whose conformation creats a barrier between phases that are necessarily independent. This discontinuity, added to failure in organization of informations, hampers the data recovery, and makes management, designers and project professionals to take decisions based on their intuition and experience. This thesis aims to evaluate the process of the exchange of information and collaboration among professionals in the production cycle in building construction, apropriating the grounds and criteria proposed by Concurrent Engineering. Automotive industry is facing a tough period. Production overcapacity and high fixed costs constrain companies' profits and challenge the very same existence of some corporations. Strangulated by the reduced cash availability and petrified by the organizational and products' complexity, companies find themselves more and more inadequate to stay in synch with the pace and the rate of change of consumers' and regulations' demands. To boost profits, nearly everyone pursue cost cutting. However, aggressive cost cutting as the sole approach to fattening margins results invariably in a reduction of operational capabilities which is likely to result in a decline in sales volume that leads to further cost reductions in a continuous death spiral. Long-term profitable growth requires, instead, a continuous flow of innovative products and processes. The focus should be, therefore, shifted from cost reduction to increased throughput. Automotive companies need to change their business model, morphing into new organizational entities based on systems thinking and change, which are agile and can swiftly adapt to the new business environment. The advancement of technology and the relentless increase in computing power will provide the necessary means for this radical transformation. The introduction of concurrent design practices to the aerospace industry has greatly increased the efficiency and productivity of engineers during design sessions. Teams that are well-versed in such practices such as JPL's Team X are able to thoroughly examine a trade space and develop a family of reliable point designs for a given mission in a matter of weeks compared to the months or years sometimes needed for traditional design. Simultaneously, advances in computing power have given rise to a host of potent numerical optimization methods capable of solving complex multidisciplinary optimization problems containing hundreds of variables, constraints, and governing equations. Unfortunately, such methods are tedious to set up and require significant amounts of time and processor power to execute, thus making them unsuitable for rapid concurrent engineering use. In some ways concurrent engineering and automated system-level optimization are often viewed as being mutually incompatible. It is therefore desirable to devise a system to allow concurrent engineering teams to take advantage of these powerful techniques without hindering the teams' performance. This paper proposes such an integration by using parametric approximations of the subsystem models. These approximations are then linked to a system-level optimizer that is capable of reaching a solution more quickly than normally possible due to the reduced complexity of the approximations. This paper provides a comprehensive insight into current trends and developments in Concurrent Engineering for integrated development of products and processes with the goal of completing the entire cycle in a shorter time, at lower overall cost and with fewer engineering design changes after product release. The evolution and definition of Concurrent Engineering are addressed first, followed by a concise review of the following elements of the concurrent engineering approach to product development: Concept Development: The Front-End Process, identifying Customer Needs and Quality Function Deployment, Establishing Product Specifications, Concept Selection, Product Architecture, Design for Manufacturing, Effective Rapid Prototyping, and The Economics of Product Development. An outline of a computer-based tutorial developed by the authors and other graduate students funded by NASA ( accessible via the world-wide-web ). is provided in this paper. A brief discussion of teamwork for successful concurrent engineering is included, t'ase histories of concurrent engineering implementation at North American and European companies are outlined with references to textbooks authored by Professor Menon and other writers. In Concurrent engineering, design solutions are not only produced by individuals specialized in a given field. Due to the team nature of the design activity, solutions are negotiated. Our objective is to analyse the argumentation processes leading to these negotiated solutions. These processes take place in the meetings which group together specialists with a co-design aim. We conducted cognitive ergonomics research work during the definition phase of an aeronautical design project in which the participants work in Concurrent Engineering. We recorded, retranscribed and analysed 7 multi-speciality meetings. These meetings were organised, as needed, to assess the integration of the solutions of each speciality into a global solution. We found that there are three main design proposal assessment modes which can be combined in these meetings: (a) analytical assessment mode, (b) comparative assessment mode (c) analogical assessment mode. Within these assessment modes, different types of arguments are used. Furthermore we found a typical temporal negotiation process.

Os empreendimentos imobiliários são produtos da indústria da construção civil que conta com incorporadores, investidores, projetistas, construtores e outros, para realizar os sonhos de famílias, ou melhor, de toda uma comunidade. Portanto, se faz necessário o estudo de ferramentas e técnicas para aperfeiçoar o desenvolvimento deste tipo de produto, que conforme se verifica na literatura, possui características únicas e é passível de falhas na sua execução. This study compares, applying mathematical modeling, the economic results of the employment of two strategies of new product development management: Point-Based Concurrent Engineering which conducts the development through improvements from an unique initial concept and Set-Based Concurrent Engineering where the development process works in parallel from a set of initially viable concepts. Mathematical models were developed to compare the economic performance of new product projects with different technical uncertainties and business environment conditions. Time-to-market and risk analyses are also developed. The main result is the strategic regions mapping, defined by project and business environment conditions. Such mapping brings managerial implications because it determines the best strategy to be employed in any innovation, well-known the project and the business environment characteristics.
