This is report contains the formal proofs for the techniques for increasing the consistency of cloud storage as presented in "Bessani et al. SCFS: A Cloud-backed File System. Proc. of the 2014 USENIX Annual Technical Conference. June 2014."; The consistency anchor technique allows one to increase the consistency provided by eventually consistent cloud storage services like Amazon S3. This technique has been used in the SCFS (Shared Cloud File System) cloud-backed file system for solving read-write conflicts and to provide strong consistency guarantees (i.e., equivalent to an atomic register) despite the weak consistency provided by the underlying cloud storage services. Here we present a formalization of such technique and prove its correctness.

The objective of the article was to estimate the internal consistency and factor structure of the Adherence Scale for Alcoholics Anonymous Groups. The scale was applied to 257 alcoholic patients who had been admitted for treatment in 3 hospitals in Porto Alegre, about 6 months earlier. The scale was produced based on an adaptation of the Drug Attitude Inventory Scale. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach alpha. Data were subjected to a principal component analysis. The coefficient of internal consistency was 0.71. All items showed corrected item-total correlation coefficients above 0.29. Questionnaire items with factor loading of 0.57 or above were considered in the final factor solution. The factor analysis resulted in 2 dimensions which corresponded to 67.01% of the total variance. This scale appears to be a valid instrument for use in a population of alcoholic patients.

Release consistency is a widely accepted memory model for distributed shared memory systems. It provides significant opportunities for a coherence protocol to improve performance by delaying and buffering coherence operations. Different protocol implementations exploit these opportunities to different extents. Eager release consistency represents the state of the art for hardware-coherent multiprocessors, while lazy release consistency has been shown to provide better performance for software distributed shared memory (DSM). Several of the optimizations performed by lazy protocols have the potential to improve the performance of hardware-coherent multiprocessors, but their complexity has precluded a hardware implementation. With the advent of programmable protocol processors it may become possible to use them after all. We present and evaluate a lazy release-consistent protocol suitable for machines with dedicated protocol processors. This protocol admits multiple concurrent writers, sends write notices concurrently with computation, and delays invalidations until acquire operations. We also consider a lazier protocol that delays sending write notices until release operations. Our results indicate that the first protocol outperforms eager release consistency by as much as 20\% across a variety of applications. The lazier protocol...

This essay is an introduction to the recent literature on the "consistency principle" and its "converse". An allocation rule is consistent if for any problem in its domain of definition and any alternative that it selects for it, then for the associated "reduced problem" obtained by imagining the departure of any subgroup of the agents with their "components of the alternative" and reassessing the options open to that subgroup. Converse consistency pertains to the opposite operation. It allows us to deduce that the rule chooses an alternative for some problem from the knowledge that for all two-person subgroups, it chooses its restriction to the subgroup for the associated reduced problem this subgroup faces. We present two lemmas, the Elevator Lemma and the Bracing Lemma, involving these properties. These lemmas have been found useful in the analysis of a great variety of models. We also describe some of their applications. Finally, we illustrate the versatility of consistency and of its converse by means of a sample of characterizations based on these principles.

In the digital relief is best represented by the digital terrain model (DTM) and the automatic extraction from topographical parameters of this data type, configures a viable alternative in relation to the manual process performed on topographic maps. However, the available data may contain faults or present information to altitude that are not exactly the terrain. In this sense, it is important to consider these issues in the application of MDT. In hydrology, for example, you must perform preprocessing steps to eliminate inconsistencies that might prevent the natural reproduction of the flow of water toward the riverbeds. The objective of this research is to check the limits of applicability of the MDTs in hydrological analyses. For this, we used 5 (five) MDTs data: Light Detection And Ranging-LIDAR; Aerial Photography; Topodata; ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model-Aster GDEM; Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-SRTM, with different spatial resolutions and methods of acquisition. These data were applied a technique of hydrological correction and subsequently were extracted attributes from all surfaces. This information was used in the construction of the time of concentration and consequently the design hydrographs, which in turn were used to extract the maximum flow of project to return periods of 5...

An approach is presented for estimating a set of interdependent homography matrices linked together by latent variables. The approach allows enforcement of all underlying consistency constraints while accounting for the arbitrariness of the scale of each individual matrix. The input data is assumed to be in the form of a set of homography matrices individually estimated from image data with no regard to the consistency constraints, appended by a set of error covariances, each characterising the uncertainty of a corresponding homography matrix. A statistically motivated cost function is introduced for upgrading, via optimisation, the input data to a set of homography matrices satisfying the constraints. The function is invariant to a change of any of the individual scales of the input matrices. The proposed approach is applied to the particular problem of estimating a set of homography matrices induced by multiple planes in the 3D scene between two views. An optimisation algorithm for this problem is developed that operates on natural underlying latent variables, with the use of those variables ensuring that all consistency constraints are satisfied. Experimental results indicate that the algorithm outperforms previous schemes proposed for the same task and is fully comparable in accuracy with the ‘gold standard’ bundle adjustment technique...

In reading science, studies carried out with English-speaking participants reading in their native language have traditionally formed the basis for most theories and models. From the 1990s, however, there was a continuously growing conviction that this English-based research agenda alone would not lead to a universal science of reading. A major reason why English is not a good basis for developing univerally applicable theories and models on reading and reading acquisition is that the English orthography is exceptionally inconsistent with regards to the relationship of letters and sounds (low grapheme-phoneme consistency). One consequence of this inconsistency is that for reading English linguistic processing rather relies on small lingusitic units, whereas for more consistent languages (such as German) large linguistic units are rather relied upon. (Psycholinguistic grain size theory (Ziegler & Goswami, 2005)) – for example ultimately leading to a relative delay regarding reading acquisition skills for children learning English. The research project presented here set out to deepen and broaden the understanding of this phenomenon. In three studies, both word processing and sentence processing in the consistent German and the inconsistent English orthography were investigated. Methodologically...

peer-reviewed; Current and emerging safety-critical applications such as the automotive X-by-wire systems require a high degree of reliability. These dependable embedded distributed systems require an ultra-reliable communication system to exchange data between the distributed components. In addition to guaranteeing a high level of reliability, these communication systems should facilitate the development of fault-tolerant applications. This can be achieved by providing additional communication system services such as interactive consistency. Interactive consistency on a communication system can be defined as a means to ensure that all non-faulty nodes on the communication system receive a consistent value for any message communicated. This paper describes the adoption of an explicit interactive consistency algorithm on a time-triggered broadcast communication system, using a shared communication medium. This is supported by the development of a prototype implementation of the interactive consistency algorithm. This prototype system demonstrates that interactive consistency is successfully achieved in the presence of a number of faults.

The importance of posterior consistency in the robustness of Bayesian analysis is examined and discussed. The notions of sufficient and minimal sufficient parameters are introduced and important consistency results for such parameters are derived. We see that minimal sufficient parameters are fundamental in characterising the relationship between data and parameters. The concept of identifiability is then introduced and several equivalent definitions are given. The relationship between consistency and identifiability is examined and means of establishing identifiability are examined with a view to finding useful practical tests of identifiability. These results are applied to a simple example involving non response.; no

Although poverty lines are widely used as deflators for inter-group welfare comparisons, their internal consistency is rarely given close scrutiny. A priori considerations suggest that commonly used methods cannot be relied on to yield poverty lines that are consistent in terms of utility, or for capabilities more generally. The theory of revealed preference offers testable implications of utility consistency for "poverty baskets" under homogeneous preferences. A case study of Russia's official poverty lines reveals numerous violations of revealed preference criteria-violations that are not solely attributable to heterogeneity in preferences associated with climatic differences.

Multiplayer games have to support activities which have differing usability requirements. The usability of the system is directly influenced by the choice of consistency maintenance algorithm. These algorithms must accommodate usability requirements while ensuring shared data is accurately replicated. We demonstrate that consistency maintenance in games can be organized around the AMP properties which state that separate nodes can maintain their instances of shared data using different algorithms (asymmetry), multiple consistency maintenance algorithms can be used within an application (multiplicity), and that consistency maintenance algorithms should be created as modular components (plug-replaceability). The motivation for AMP is outlined with a review of examples from commercial 3D games and related research. Consistency maintenance algorithms are shown to exist in a usability trade-off space. A set of usability metrics is introduced and used to experimentally explore this space. Our results imply that no single algorithm is suitable for every in-game situation. The thesis concludes with an informal evaluation of the AMP based on our experience using the Fiaa.NET as an AMP framework. We found that AMP had several weaknesses, but that these were outweighed by the benefits for the developer.; Thesis (Master...

Automated consistency checking of UML models becomes necessary as models grow in size and complexity. Since the UML metamodel does not enforce model consistency, there are no fixed guidelines on how to approach the consistency problem. Current solutions are generally partial. The translation of the metamodel and the user designed model into Description Logics has proved to provide a solution in detecting a large set of inconsistencies. In order to make this solution available to system designers, we have implemented MCC+, a UML model consistency checker, built as a plug-in for Poseidon for UML, and relying on Jena as a reasoning engine. Compared to other approaches, we propose a usable and scalable solution, interoperable with a known modeling tool. We show the application of MCC+ to a real world large example of a meshing tool.; The work of Nancy Hitschfeld-Kahler has been supported by project Fondecyt No. 1061227.

This paper begins by introducing three alternative properties of expectations: weak consistency, strong consistency, perfect foresight. These concepts are then used to consider the relationship between beginnning of period equilibrium and end of period equilibrium for both discrete and continuous time. We show that in the former case the consistency between them requires not only that there be perfect foresight in predicting certain relevant variables but also that there can be no accumulation of assets. In the latter case the relationship between the two equilibria rests on much weaker conditions. They are equivalent provided expectations satisfy our assumption of weak consistency

The purpose of this study was to establish a reliable control method to maintain the visual hue consistency of "critical colors" on a four-color lithographic press. The term "critical colors" indicates those colors which are deemed by the customer or pressman to be important for a particular job and will require special attention to maintain their hue consistency. It was hypothesized that a densitometer, which automatically computes hue error and grayness using the Preucil method, could be used to measure critical colors and maintain their computed hue consistency. In order to analyze the effect of the control method monitoring hue error and grayness, the press sheets controlled by this method (the experimental group) were compared with the press sheets controlled by the pressman's visual judgment only (the control group). Colors with different hue and halftone-dot sizes were chosen as critical colors for the experiment. During the production of the experimental group, the hue error values of critical colors were controlled to remain within an arbitrary tolerance of ±4-percent from the measured hue error values on the O.K. sheet, as indicated acceptable by a previous study. From the sample press sheets drawn from the experimental group and the control group...

Consistency is one of the most important physical properties of fats since it is directly associated with its several applications. This property can be considered an important functional aspect of the plastic fats, which are a mixture of solid and liquid fat phase. The fat solid phase forms a tridimentional lattice arising plasticity to the fat. The objective of this paper was to analyze the interactions that occur in binary mixtures of two animal fats (abdominal chicken fat and bacon fat), regarding their consistency at different temperatures. The samples were analyzed for the fatty acid composition and for the consistency at the temperatures of 10 to 25 ºC. The texture analyzer TA-XT2 (Stable Micro Systems) was utilized. A mathematical model of multiple regression of the quadratic type was applied. The results showed that the eutectic effect was observed between the binary mixtures of stearins and bacon fat.
