Esta dissertação demonstra a possibilidade de aplicação dos princípios ecológicos no design de jóias com o objetivo de contribuir para a sistematização do conhecimento sobre o ecodesign de jóias. Num primeiro momento, a fundamentação teórica foi realizada por meio de pesquisa exploratória e descritiva, apoiada pela revisão e discussão da literatura técnica e científica sobre jóia, design de jóias e ecodesign de produtos. Essa etapa forneceu os subsídios para o desenvolvimento das jóias ecológicas realizadas pelo autor entre 2007 e 2009 e constituintes dos três casos estudados. A revisão da literatura, contraposta à experiência do autor como designer de jóias, possibilitou a construção do instrumento de análise ecológica de produtos joalheiros. Após a descrição dos casos, passou-se a analisá-los sob a ótica do conhecimento teórico sobre o ecodesign de jóias, através da aplicação do instrumento de análise construído, a fim de verificar a pontuação ecológica e os limites e vantagens ambientais constatados no desenvolvimento dos produtos, bem como os níveis de eficácia, eficiência e ecoeficiência das jóias, comprovando a possibilidade real do ecodesign de jóias. A gestão do desperdício e da reciclagem é um dos grandes problemas actuais sequentes da indústria têxtil e do vestuário. Milhões de toneladas de matérias têxteis, incluindo o despejo de roupa, são rejeitadas anualmente, sendo parte delas ainda reutilizáveis. Face a estes problemas, é importante desenvolver estratégias e criar ferramentas que reduzam não só a poluição, mas também o consumo e o desperdício têxtil. Fora de Portugal, existem várias iniciativas, geradas pelo sector público ou privado, e diferentes áreas de intervenção. O estudo proposto pretende expor o “Design” como intervencionista e demonstrar como ele pode participar, de forma sustentável, no ciclo de Moda. Minimizar os impactos ambientais, sociais e económicos, sem deixar de satisfazer as necessidades do mercado, são objectivos que o Design, enquanto elemento “global”, pode e deve planear. Dissertação de Mestrado em Ambiente, Saúde e Segurança.; Ao fim de quase um século de desenvolvimento económico e social extraordinário, da crescente globalização, da revolução contínua das tecnologias de informação e comunicação (ICT´s), e das rápidas inovações e rotações de processos e produtos, constata-se que a utilização de recursos naturais, o impacte dos derivados do petróleo, e a crescente produção de resíduos colocam seriamente em causa a sustentabilidade terrestre. Nos finais dos anos 90´s, o Concelho Mundial de Negócios para um Desenvolvimento Sustentável (WBCSD) identificou 7 factores de sucesso para a “eco-eficiência”, dos quais se realçam a desmaterialização, a redução da intensidade energética dos produtos e serviços, a promoção da reciclabilidade, o aumento da durabilidade dos produtos, e o aumento da partilha de bens e serviços. Esta dissertação tem como objectivo primordial rever casos de design de brinquedos e analisá-los face a considerações ecológicas e educativas, criando um ponto de ligação entre a educação para a sustentabilidade e as boas práticas do eco design, concebendo ainda uma metodologia que possa ser usada na produção de novos objectos lúdicos e, ou, didácticos. Assim, foi efectuada uma revisão bibliográfica para o levantamento do estado da arte, no âmbito dos temas de educação para a sustentabilidade, design ecológico de brinquedos e metodologias de design sustentável. A dissertação produziu também resultados de âmbito metodológico, como produto da revisão das metodologias existentes, da sua análise e da sua combinação, e, ou melhoria. Ecoinnovation strategies are increasingly adopted to ensure the minimization of environmental impacts. Nonetheless, only a comprehensive integrated assessment along the life cycle stages of a product may ensure a robust analysis of the benefit of the innovation. The object of the present study is the environmental assessment of furniture prototypes produced using certified wood and integrating eco-design criteria in their conception. The aim of the study was twofold: firstly, to evaluate the environmental profile of the furniture, highlighting possible hot-spots of impacts; and secondly, to evaluate the capability of LCA to identify the environmental benefit associated to the adoption of life-cycle management and ecodesign strategies, such as: ensuring short supply chain from raw material to production; using wood coming from certified forests (according to PEFC scheme); and the implementation of ecodesign principles, also associated with green public procurement requirements. Methods LCA has been applied in a case study related to the wood furniture sector in the alpine region of Northern Italy is presented. Scientifiques, gouvernements, entreprises et consommateurs s’entendent aujourd’hui pour dire que le système naturel est déréglé, que l’activité industrielle en est la cause principale. L’éco-conception est une manière de concevoir des biens ou des services en diminuant leurs impacts sur l’environnement et la société. De plus en plus présente dans les grandes entreprises où, associée à une gestion intégrée de l’environnement, elle procure des bénéfices non négligeables et une image de marque, l’éco-conception a beaucoup de difficultés à s’implanter dans les petites et moyennes entreprises. Dans ce travail, nous avons cherché à comprendre les raisons de ces difficultés. Deux approches ont été utilisées, l’une basée sur une analyse documentaire des rapports de RSE de dix entreprises, grandes et petites, de différents secteurs d’activité, qui nous a permis de fixer le cadre et le formalisme de la démarche de recherche, l’autre sur le principe d’entretiens semi-dirigés à partir de questions ciblées. Aujourd’hui, il existe très peu de nouveaux produits écoconçus (NPE) mis sur le marché par les PME du Québec et les réussites commerciales sont encore plus rares. Dans ce contexte, il semble pertinent de se pencher sur la manière dont le processus d’écoconception pourrait être à la fois mieux et plus utilisé dans les PME québécoises en étudiant spécifiquement la réception des NPE auprès des détaillants pendant la commercialisation. La question à laquelle se propose de répondre ce mémoire est la suivante : comment un produit conçu selon une approche cycle de vie est-il reçu par le réseau de détaillants d’une PME? Aussi, cette recherche explore le rôle du designer, qui normalement s’achève au début de la commercialisation, que pourrait jouer durant cette phase afin de favoriser la réception positive d’un NPE. Cette recherche s’appuie sur une étude de cas de la première phase de commercialisation d’un meuble de salle de bain écoconçu par une PME manufacturière québécoise en 2010 et 2011. La chercheuse a observé la réception d’un NPE, c’est-à-dire la perception et l’appréciation de celui-ci, par des personnes œuvrant dans une PME de fabrication d’ameublement de salle de bain et par ceux qui agissent dans son réseau de distribution. The use of day-to-day life artifacts is a key phase in the lifecycle of products. Indeed it has a great impact on our environment. User centered methods are not yet taken into account in eco-design approaches. These methods are being developed in two ways, by building new user models encompassing complex dimensions such as Kansei and experience, including values and moods, and by integrating the user himself in the design process. This paper deals with setting-up a new theoretical framework associating user-centered design advanced approaches such as experience design, Kansei studies, or participative design and eco-design methods. Integrating environmental aspects in the design process is getting more and more covered by the actual scientific research. Based on various fields such as "eco-design", "Design for sustainability", "eco-innovation", several specific software and methods have been developed to tackle this issue. Our work focuses on product designer software and eco-designer software that already exist. This research analyses product design and eco-design—considering their respective complexity—in order to determine the main difficulties to systematically integrate environmental aspects in the design process. Our observations have led us to work on three elements: information, software, and collaboration between designers and LCA expert. The principal objective is to facilitate the interface between product design and eco-design by linking the requirements and performances of both domains. Nowadays, in order to face increasing competition, businesses must differentiate through innovation, but also crucially by positioning themselves with respect to environmental concerns, in order to improve brand image. SMEs are particularly plagued with a lack in human, financial and time resources to integrate such aspects to design. In this paper, we propose a gradual approach (short-, medium- and long-term) to implement an eco-design process in SMEs. This process comprises four stages: analysis, sensitisation, eco-design strategy and sustained improvement. A first experimentation, in collaboration with a SME (MulTiroir-Controlec), allowed us to integrate this eco-design process in the development of a new product range of hospital carts. We present the results of the product development as well as an experience feedback on the project; today the company integrates this eco-design approach in its strategy.

We propose here to highlight the benefits of building a framework linking Kansei Design (KD), User Centered Design (UCD) and Eco-design, as the correlation between these fields is barely explored in research at the current time. Therefore, we believe Kansei Design could serve the goal of achieving more sustainable products by setting up an accurate understanding of the user in terms of ecological awareness, and consequently enhancing performance in the Eco-design process. El títol del pre-print va ser: Eco-innovation of urban elements to support sustainable multimodal mobility; The provision of an adequate network of urban infrastructures is essential to create clean and energy-efficient urban mobility systems. However, the urban infrastructure to support sustainable mobility can produce a substantial environmental burden if no life cycle environmental criteria are applied in its design and management. This paper demonstrates the potential to support energy-efficient and CO2-free pedestrian and e-bike mobility through the eco-design of urban elements. An eco-design approach is applied to reconceptualize a conventional pergola toward an eco-product (solar pergola). The solar pergola generates surplus photovoltaic electricity that provides a multifunctional character. According to the end-use of this energy, passive and active contributions to sustainability are distinguished for robust decision-making. The deployment of solar pergolas can contribute to save from 2,080 kg to over 47,185 kg of CO2 eq. and from 350,390 MJ to over 692,760 MJ eq. in 10 years, depending on the geographic emplacement and electricity grid system. Sustainable manufacturing has increasingly included design for environment methodologies with the objective of improving the environmental performance of products over their entire life cycles. Current European Union (EU) directives on eco-design focus on the use phase of energy-related products (ErPs). However, the maintenance of various household non-ErPs is performed with ErPs; therefore, the environmental impacts of product maintenance have an important role in the life cycle of non-ErPs. This article presents two eco-design studies where the implementation of improvement strategies of the use and maintenance phase of products had relevant results. Furthermore, environmental communication-to-user strategies were important to ensure the commitment of users toward eco-efficient behaviors. First, a knife was eco-designed according to strategies which focused on materials, processing, maintenance, and communication to user. By applying eco-design in a cradle-to-consumer scope, improvements decreased the environmental impact of the eco-designed product by 30%. However, when considering the entire life cycle of the eco-designed product, environmental impacts could be reduced by up to 40% and even up to ≈93% (depending on the cleaning procedure) as a result of large improvements in the maintenance stage. Whilst there are many tools aiming to support environmentally conscious design, they are typically complex to use, demand substantial data collection and are not tailored to the specific needs of the medical device sector. This paper reports on the development of a Maturity Grid to address this gap. This novel design tool was developed iteratively through application in five case studies. The tool captures principles of eco-design for medical devices in a simple form, designed to be used by a team. This intervention tool provides designers and product marketers with insights on how to improve the design of their medical devices and specifically allows consideration of the complex trade-offs between decisions that influence different life-cycle stages. The sustainable building design process is driven on the basis of a range of design eco-indicators. Consideration of a multitude of eco-determinants, such as environment, economy, resources, energy consumption and society values in addition to design characteristics and contexts, makes the process of ecological design even more complex. A large number of eco-drivers are extracted from the literature and current design practices. To gain a better insight on eco-design determinants, a survey focusing on the use of eco-design drivers has been conducted with various architects in the UK. The factor analysis method was used to remove redundant data from the survey. Through the factor analysis approach, 115 eco-determinants are grouped into six main clusters. This article presents the process, analysis and findings of this work. The extracted eco-indicators and their associated clusters can be used to improve the process of ecological building design. Design and ecology are critical issues in the industrial sector. Products are subject to constant review and optimization for survival in the market, and limited by their impact on the planet. Decisions about a new product affect its life cycle, consumers, and especially the environment. In order to achieve quality solutions, eco-effectiveness must be considered, therefore, in the design of a process, its product development and associated system. An orderly methodology is essential to help towards creating products that meet both user needs and current environmental requirements, under paradigms that create environmental value. To date, the industry has developed techniques in an attempt to address these expectations under Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C), which is loosely structured around the conceptual frameworks and design techniques. The present work describes a new framework that encompasses all stages of design, and enables interaction under a set of principles developed for C2C.
