A pesquisa tem por objetivo, compreender as possibilidades e os desafios da prática pedagógica do professor-tutor no curso Veredas, destinado à habilitação de professores das séries iniciais do ensino fundamental, na modalidade de Educação a Distância EaD). O estudo da prática do tutor no Veredas se deu por meio de pesquisa de campo, na Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (AFOR UFU), em Uberlândia, MG, no período de janeiro de 2003 a julho de 2005. Para melhor compreender de que modo e em que condições o tutor desenvolveu sua função de mediação pedagógica na formação de professores e qual a percepção dos tutores acerca da própria prática, observamos as atividades dos tutores nos encontros presenciais do curso. Realizamos entrevista semiestruturada com tutores e coordenadores, grupo focal com cursistas e análise documental. Participaram da pesquisa, dez tutores e trinta cursistas do total de 42 tutores e 630 professores cursistas. Os resultados mostraram que o Veredas apresentou avanços e inovação no que diz respeito à formação superior de professores das séries iniciais do ensino fundamental em EaD. Entretanto, a pesquisa aponta aspectos que precisam ser corrigidos e aperfeiçoados para melhor atender às necessidades de cursistas e tutores. Esta tese estuda as concepções de avaliação da aprendizagem em cursos a distância, pois tendo em vista a crescente oferta de cursos nesta modalidade de ensino, a partir do desenvolvimento das tecnologias de informação e comunicação, acreditamos ser o tema relevante para que cursos a distância possam, de fato, contribuir, para que superemos, enquanto nação, a desigualdade de acesso à educação. Consideramos como aporte teórico os princípios da avaliação formativa, uma vez que um de seus principais objetivos é oferecer informações para que professor e aluno possam repensar e fazer os ajustes necessários nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem. O estudo feito sobre a História da Educação a Distância e os meios de comunicação utilizados nesta modalidade de ensino objetivou compreender o status que ocupa nos dias de hoje, para então entender as prováveis concepções que norteiam a legislação vigente sobre o tema. Também analisamos três documentos de instituições de ensino superior que oferecem cursos a distância, buscando identificar a concepção de avaliação da aprendizagem. Como contribuição, podemos destacar dois pontos: a análise de instrumentos de avaliação da aprendizagem que podem ser utilizados em cursos a distância e um conjunto de princípios que podem gerar inúmeras práticas pedagógicas que favoreçam a construção do conhecimento e a aprendizagem. Os atuais contextos educacionais a distância ou híbridos, assentados na internet, introduzem novas formas de estudar e aprender, suscitando questões que precisam ser discutidas acerca da qualidade e efetividade da Educação a Distância (EAD). A presente pesquisa objetivou propor e testar um modelo de avaliação de ações educacionais a distância, visando identificar variáveis preditoras de aprendizagem relacionadas às características da clientela (estratégias de aprendizagem e frequência nos recursos da web) e às reações aos procedimentos instrucionais e ao tutor. A universidade parceira oferece desde 2008 cursos superiores em EAD, sendo as disciplinas semipresenciais Metodologia Científica e Economia, ofertadas a todos os graduandos da instituição. Foram aplicados virtual e presencialmente os questionários de Estratégias de aprendizagem, Reação aos procedimentos instrucionais e Reação ao desempenho do tutor, os quais, anteriormente à coleta de dados, sofreram modificações para se adequarem às especificidades dos contextos de ensino superior (validação semântica e/ou por juízes). Para constatar as evidências de validade dos instrumentos, foram realizadas análises exploratórias fatoriais (Principal Components e Principal Axis Factoring) e de consistência interna (Alfa de Cronbach). Os sistemas de ensino, baseados em redes de computadores, denominados Ambientes de Ensino Distribuídos, são uma excelente alternativa de solução para o ensino a distância1, pelo fato de manterem os recursos instrucionais centralizados, permitindo um maior controle sobre o processo, e de colocarem estes recursos simultaneamente à disposição de diversos alunos ao mesmo tempo, possibilitando oportunidades de ensino a um maior número de pessoas e diminuindo os custos de sistemas educacionais em larga escala. Os Ambientes de Ensino Inteligentes, por outro lado, constituem uma classe de instrumentos de ensino muito mais avançados do ponto de vista pedagógico. Resultados experimentais, no entanto, levam a crer que uma solução ideal para a Educação a Distância deveria privilegiar os dois aspectos. The process of expansion and democratization of higher education in the country, in recent decades, with the university reforms implemented by the State, has caused hard debate about the future of the university. It is in the midst of these reforms that the Distance Education (EaD) on upper level begins to expand, is viewed as strategic to democratize the access to higher education, by virtue of the possibilities arising from the improvement of Information Technology and Communication (TIC) from 1990s. This study strives to sketch an initial map of the extent and nature of institutional and program differentiation within African systems of tertiary education. In doing so, it also seeks to chart the patterns of articulation that have emerged or been consciously put in place between the different institutional types (such as public universities, private universities, polytechnics, training colleges). The analysis of tertiary education differentiation and articulation is based on field visits to a dozen selected African countries. Its purpose is to improve general understanding of this under-researched but strategically important technical aspect of African higher education at a time when it is becoming an important aspect of education policy. This study had three purposes related to the effective implem,entation and practice of computer-mediated online distance education (C-MODE) at the elementary level: (a) To identify a preliminary framework of criteria 'or guidelines for effective implementation and practice, (b) to identify areas ofC-MODE for which criteria or guidelines of effectiveness have not yet been developed, and (c) to develop an implementation and practice criteria questionnaire based on a review of the distance education literature, and to use the questionnaire in an exploratory survey of elementary C-MODE practitioners. Using the survey instrument, the beliefs and attitudes of 16 elementary C'- MODE practitioners about what constitutes effective implementation and practice principles were investigated. Respondents, who included both administrators and instructors, provided information about themselves and the program in which they worked. They rated 101 individual criteria statenlents on a 5 point Likert scale with a \. point range that included the values: 1 (Strongly Disagree), 2 (Disagree), 3 (Neutral or Undecided), 4 (Agree), 5 (Strongly Agree). Respondents also provided qualitative data by commenting on the individual statements, or suggesting other statements they considered important. Eighty-two different statements or guidelines related to the successful implementation and practice of computer-mediated online education at the elementary level were endorsed. It is the outcome of a research carried out by a Working Group on Distance Education and e-Learning (GT-EADEL), based on the principles and initiatives stated by the executive board of the University of Minho’s Institute of Education. This study was based on the need to identify perceptions, concepts, teaching practices and requirements in distance learning (EaD) and e-learning among lecturers at the Institute of Education, University of Minho (IE-UM) in order to better plan an intervention in awareness-raising and teaching in this field. Despite the specificity of the study in relation to the subjects involved, we believe that some of the aspects tackled, particularly those regarding what leads lecturers to use or not use an e-learning platform, may be useful indicators for other institutions committed to stimulating distance and e-learning teaching practices. The data were gathered via an electronic version of the questionnaire 'Perceptions, teaching practices and requirements in the domain of distance education and e-learning'. Introduction: Prostate Cancer (PC) screening has become a controversial topic both in the United States and abroad, stimulating debates surrounding who should and should not be screened. United States (USA) population-based studies have established a link between race and PC risk, but whether race predicts PC after adjusting for clinical characteristics is unclear. In Brazil, where cancer registries are limited, underprivileged men have limited access to both education and health care due to geographic barriers. Thus, we investigated the association between, educational status, geographic distance from screening site to follow-up care facility and non-compliance with having cancer, and, risk of low and high-grade PC in men undergoing initial prostate biopsy in equal access medical centers in the USA and Brazil.

The development of distance education is associated with the popularization and democratization of the accessibility to information and communication technologies. Nursing has been using this modality of education in both undergraduate and graduate courses, which has provided knowledge about other technologies, an easier accessibility, flexibility of time and space, and reduced costs. The objective of this study is map the national higher education distance nursing courses. This exploratory, descriptive study was developed by visiting governmental, non-governmental and institutional websites. Two undergraduate and nine graduate courses in nursing were found, which is considered to be a low number, considering that distance education is an appropriate pedagogical tool that permits to prepare a large number of nurses who are geographically dispersed and who do not have access to the conventional educational processes.; El desarrollo de la Educación a Distancia está asociado a la popularización y democratización del acceso a Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación.
