The present masters thesis presents results of an investigation on Law & Economics, not just based on the economic analysis of law developed by the Chicago School...

Our aim was to characterise the relationships between literacy practises developed in Portuguese kindergartens and children’s conceptualisations about the functions and nature of written language. The participants were 16 kindergarten teachers and 160 five-year-old children – i.e. a 1:10 teacher/child ratio. We developed an observation grid to characterise their literacy practises. It covers two main aspects of the teachers’ work: reading, writing and metalinguistic practises (14 items) and ways of supporting children’s attempts to read and write (16 items). It was used by two observers who spent two weeks in the kindergartens. The kindergarten teachers were divided into three groups depending on their literacy practises. In order to characterise the children’s conceptualisations about written language, in October and May we assessed both their perceptions of the objectives and functions of written language and their invented spelling. The results show that there are close relationships between literacy practises pursued by the three groups of kindergarten teachers and the children’s conceptualisations about written language.

peer-reviewed; The present study brings together the disciplines of sociolinguistics and media studies. In recent years, the availability of media in minority languages has become an area subject to some research within the area of media sociolinguistics. It is widely accepted that the existence of minority language media is important for such languages, but exactly how important the availability of such media is to the efforts to revitalise minority languages has remained relatively unexplored. The current study seeks to compensate for this gap in the research by investigating to what extent minority language television functions as an effective mechanism of language policy. Drawing on the most recent theoretical thinking within the discipline of language policy studies put forward by Spolsky (2004) and Shohamy (2006), this thesis will investigate whether minority language television can function as a mechanism of language policy. The research focuses on university students between the ages of 18 and 25, who are not first language-speakers of two particular minority languages, Irish and Basque. The case research was conducted at the University of Limerick and at the University of the Basque Country and involved the use of both quantitative and qualitative research methods. These included a questionnaire stage...

peer-reviewed; This study, set in the field of English for academic legal purposes (EALP), sets out to first identify a semi-technical word list in post-graduate academic legal written texts and then to examine the rhetorical functions such a wordlist enables as an indicator of the epistemology of the disciplinary community. This field was chosen because access to student assignments is hindered by the fact that they are not in published form; yet numerically, they most likely outnumber published academic material. In a post-graduate context, where in the field of law there is an influx of non-native speakers who have had their legal education in systems other than the English language dominated Common Law, the need to quickly understand how information is to be organised and communicated in student academic texts is a very pressing one indeed. The thesis adopts a corpus linguistics approach to the identification of semi-technical language. The corpus is comprised of texts written by post-graduate students studying Masters in Law (LLM) courses at three universities in Ireland; the corpus is just under one million words. The approach relies on quantitative methods to arrive at a vocabulary list and beyond the initial setting of parameters for data organisation and filtering...

The development of the interpersonal functions of language is a key step in language ontogeny. Archaeological evidence of hominids moving raw materials across the landscape suggest that changes in the interpersonal communication abilities of hominids represent major events in human language evolution. The earliest hominids moved raw materials short distances, suggesting home-range sizes, social complexity and interpersonal abilities similar to those of primates. A transition from primate communication to a protolanguage is indicated by a large increase in raw-material transfer distances at about 1.2 million years ago. The increase in transfer distances results from the ability to pool social and environmental information using a protolanguage. The transition to human language is suggested by the emergence of long-distance exchange networks during the African Middle Stone Age. The operation of exchange networks requires the full panoply of human interpersonal communication abilities, such as the use of symbols in social contexts, expression of displacement, the expression of multiple degrees of intentionality and recursiveness. The results of computer simulations show that this transition from protolanguage to full language may have resulted from language adapting itself rather than any specific biological or cultural mutation.; yes

Background: Early left hemispheric brain lesions often induce right hemispheric organization of language functions. The children thus affected show delays in language development, but an apparently normal language outcome when they are adolescents or adults. Many patients with early left hemispheric brain lesions, however, show persistent deficits in visuospatial skills, which are usually mediated by the right hemisphere. This paradox finding has been explained by a) a "crowding" of the right hemisphere, or b) considered to be due to unspecific lesion effects. Methods: The present work examined with neuropsychological methods and functional neuroimaging the consequences of early left-hemispheric brain injury on the behavioral and the functional neuroanatomical level. Patients with congenital left-hemispheric brain lesions and normal controls were examined with a neuropsychological test battery and with verbal and nonverbal tasks in functional MRI. Results: It was shown that patients with early left hemispheric brain lesions may experience deficits in visuospatial functions, if their lesion induced a reorganization of language to the right hemisphere. The visuospatial deficits are, in these patients, not an unspecific consequence of the brain lesion...

This dissertation establishes a novel data-driven method to identify language network activation patterns in pediatric epilepsy through the use of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A total of 122 subjects’ data sets from five different hospitals were included in the study through a web-based repository site designed here at FIU. Research was conducted to evaluate different classification and clustering techniques in identifying hidden activation patterns and their associations with meaningful clinical variables. The results were assessed through agreement analysis with the conventional methods of lateralization index (LI) and visual rating. What is unique in this approach is the new mechanism designed for projecting language network patterns in the PCA-based decisional space. Synthetic activation maps were randomly generated from real data sets to uniquely establish nonlinear decision functions (NDF) which are then used to classify any new fMRI activation map into typical or atypical. The best nonlinear classifier was obtained on a 4D space with a complexity (nonlinearity) degree of 7. Based on the significant association of language dominance and intensities with the top eigenvectors of the PCA decisional space...

This study falls within a broad field of the sociolinguistics of Arabic, namely the diglossic variation between spoken Standard Arabic (SA) and Native Arabic (NA). I borrow the latter term from Owens (2001) which seems to me more “neutral” than ‘colloquial’ or ‘dialect’: NA is, in fact, the first variety of Arabic people learn since they are children. It deals with one of the main approaches to variation, code-switching (CS), within a specific region, Egypt, and within a specific genre, Christian homilies. I will use EA to generically indicate Egyptian native varieties. Whenever I need to specify that I deal only with Cairene Arabic, I will use the abbreviation CEA (Cairene Egyptian Arabic). The general question this study starts from is: if the combined use of SA and NA at various level of Spoken Arabic is a very common practice among Arab speakers, attestable through simple linguistic observation, what are the rhetorical motivations for which Arabs code-switch from SA to NA and vice-versa? And specifically what does CS add to the argumentative construction of an oral text, specifically a Christian religious discourse? The hypotheses posited that will be tested in the course of this study are: 1) diglossic CS occurs with considerable frequency in Christian religious discourse as well as in other genres; 2) these switches occur only at an intersentential level; 3) switches are always rhetorically functional...

PURPOSES: To translate and adapt the Clinical Evaluation of Language Functions - 4th Edition (CELF-4) to Brazilian Portuguese. METHOD: One hundred and sixty normal language development school children between the ages of seven and ten, half from public schools and the other half from private schools, both located on the east side of São Paulo. RESULTS: CELF-4's translation and adjustment to Brazilian Portuguese language showed equivalence between the original and translated versions, which demonstrates that there were no significant changes in the test's form and content. Cronbach's α test was used in order to verify CELF-4's subtests internal consistency, in other words, if every subtest measures consistently the evaluated constructors. In this analysis, we observed that by excluding right or wrong items, and problematic items from the pool (those different from the rest of the group), all analyzed subtest presented satisfactory internal consistency, except for the Word Association Task for eight years old. CONCLUSION: Most subtests, as well as the Pragmatic Profile and the Observational Evaluation Scale, were simply translated, dismissing significant adaptations. The alterations performed were due to morphosyntactic and phonological differences between both languages. CELF-4's translated and adapted version to Brazilian Portuguese was able to characterize the language performance in the studied population.

III Colloquium on Semi-Immersion in Catalonia; III Encuentro sobre Semi-Inmersión en Cataluña; This paper presents an overview of the UAM-CLIL Project which began in the academic year 2005-06 collecting data in two CLIL classes in two schools participating in the British Council/Spanish Ministry of Education bilingual programme, and has followed the same groups from 1º to 4º of ESO (Obligatory Secondary Education) in the subject of Social Science, taught in English. In the project, we have collected spoken and written data from whole class sessions, and recorded six students from each class individually, once a year on a topic from the syllabus, making a corpus of approximately 40,000 spoken and 25,000 written words. Our aim is to describe the features of the language of these students in relation to the language needs of the discipline they are studying. We have collected parallel data from L1 Spanish classes, as well as some similar data from L1 English students, for comparison. We are also interested in the teachers’ performance, in relation to the students’ production. Here, we describe the spoken and written corpus and some results of our analyses of the language produced in classroom interaction and in the students’ written texts on the same topic. The linguistic framework we use is the systemic-functional model (Halliday 2004)...

This text aims to define the statute and the functions of language in methodologies of analysis in a clinic of activity. Initially, we define the language in a conceptualization that allows us to consider it as an instrument, as an activity but also as an empirically analyzable product of human activity. Then, using Vygotsky’s psychology and his views on the functional diversity of language in psychological life, we examine how the various forms of language, promoted by the methodologies of the clinic of activity...

Halliday divides the functions of language into three macro-functions' which he calls: ideational function, expressing content, or the propositional content of the speaker's xperiences of the real and inner world; interpersonal function, which is the means whereby we achieve communication, taking on speech roles vis-à-vis other people, complaining, narrating, enquiring, encouraging, etc.; and textual function, which serves to connect discourse, weaving it together. Under this latter function comes the notion of cohesion. Phoric' elements are parts of the reference system needed for a text to be cohesive. Russian formalists, French structuralists and recent Anglo-American literary critics assert that literature is a special kind of discourse. Their assumptions are that literature can be distinguished from other kinds of discourses by its 'literariness'. For the formalists, there is an opposition between poetic and non-poetic language, and literary or poetic language is autonomous. These are the main points of their argument, according to Pratt (1977): language functions in literature differently from the way it does elsewhere; relations between the literary and non-literary functions of language are one of opposition; 3. this oppostion is fully manifested in the observable properties of literary and non-literary language.; Russian formalists, French structuralists and recent Anglo-American literary critics assert that literature is a special kind of discourse. 'All options are embedded in the language system: the system is a network of options, deriving from all the various functions of language' (1973:111) Thus a certain choice of (one set of different) options rather than another can be said to have been motivated by what the speaker (or writer) wanted to mean -- to convey or emphasize.
