This dissertation aims to analyze sociologically labor relations in social work in the metropolitan area of Goiânia, revealing how the social workers are affected and experience the changes taking place in the universe of work and its implications for the category. Still, there are as specific objectives: to outline the socioeconomic profile of social workers; to analyze the process of construction of social identities of these professionals; and to identify how ownership of emotional labor and gender constructions affect the profession. The methodology has qualitative emphasis. A semistructured interview with social workers was the main procedure for the construction of qualitative data, with technical elements of narrative interviews. The quantitative data were used as sources of secondary data bases, as Census, PNAD and RAIS sources. The results indicate a visible process of casualization of working conditions in social service, particularly with respect to the type of job contract (temporary contracts, commissioned position, volunteer work), diferent types of work journey arrangements, widely disparate wages, unstable links and absence of social rights (holidays, maternity leave, etc). Even workers with effective statutory relationship are affected by the dichotomy of contracts...

non-peer-reviewed; This research investigates the construction of gender identity in the discourse of pregnancy advice literature. It focuses in particular on uncovering the societal power asymmetries and hierarchies which repress and control women, and on identifying how the discourse of pregnancy advice literature operates to sustain these hierarchies. The thesis is based on a diachronic critical discourse analysis of a selected number of pregnancy advice texts in English and French, using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of description, interpretation and explanation. The social conditions and discourse processes framing these texts are thus considered in the analysis of the lexical and grammatical patterns used to represent women and position them in relation to other social actors. The study considers firstly how discourse is used as an instrument of power and control in the positioning of pregnant women in relation to the medical institution, and subsequently investigates how women’s emotions during pregnancy, and their attitudes both to their pregnancies and to their changing bodies are constructed in the discourse of pregnancy advice literature. This research also focuses on constructions of masculinity and femininity in this discourse in order to identify how gender roles are discursively constituted. The thesis ultimately demonstrates that historical discourse patterns are being reformulated yet reproduced in contemporary pregnancy advice literature...

Taking into account inter-dependence within the family, we investigate the relationship between part-time work and happiness. We use panel data from the new Household, Income and Labor Dynamics in Australia Survey. Our analysis indicates that part-time women are more satisfied with working hours than full-time women. Partnered women’s life satisfaction is increased if their partners work full-time. Male partners’ life satisfaction is unaffected by their partners’ market hours but is increased if they themselves are working full-time. This finding is consistent with the gender identity hypothesis of Akerlof and Kranton (2000).; no

Against a background of significant social change experienced by Spanish women from the 1960s onwards, new gender identities and conflicts have emerged. These factors have barely been taken into account in the research work done in Spain. This article looks into the conversations of young people concerning their relationship with risky sexual behaviour, recreational drug use and sexual identity. Drawing from a qualitative study of discussion groups and emi structured interviews with young recreational drug users, the article suggests that there are at least two models of femininity among the recreational drug consumers that have taken part in this study. First there is a traditional romantic model whereby young women associated risky sexual behaviour with being in love or trusting in the partner. Here the young woman does not link her sexual behaviour to the effects of using recreational drugs but, rather, to the characteristics of her emotional relationship. Second, there is a model of new values and gender roles that are closer to those traditionally associated to males, where the young women use recreational drugs as a form of empowerment to take on new situations concerning their sexuality. The article analyses the perceptions of risk among the different identity groups...

Feminist theory has identified the complex social practices it is made of as well as the ethics of responsibility which underpin it, all of it, according to Gilligan, constructed through the long process of women’s socialization. When men become involved in care...

Thesis (PhD) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2006; The discipline of gender studies, driven by the social movement of feminism, has become an established area of study on a number of university campuses. Early examinations of gender studies courses identified two specific influences of this newly formed branch of education, intellectual mastery of the course content and the less traditional goal of personal change (the effects of student connections between class materials and personal experiences). Based on existing research, feminist theory and theories of gender development, the author of the present study hypothesized a continued personal change impact of current gender studies courses. The study explored this concept of personal change through an examination of the pre-course relationships between biological sex, experiences with sexism, parental nontraditional gender roles and students' feminist perspectives. Furthermore, the study examined post-course effects related to the concept of personal change through an inquiry on the influence of an introductory gender studies course on students' feminist perspective, gender identity, and gender self-confidence. As pre-course and post-course measures, gender studies students (n = 118) from three separate sections of the same undergraduate course completed a series of questionnaires pertaining to these areas. As a control...

It has been claimed that the conditions of modernity create the opportunities as well as the need for social actors to take greater responsibility for their own identities. Feminist theorists have responded to such `celebratory' views of identity transformation with caution, emphasizing instead the situated nature of critical reflexivity and arguing that the opportunities for transformations in gender identity are far more limited than has been suggested by modernization theorists. In this article, the authors address this issue of the transformative potential of critical reflexivity by drawing upon Frankfurt's (1988) notion of second-order desires and Bonham's (1999) re-working of this in relation to Bourdieu's social theory. Illustrating the argument with data drawn from three case studies from Singapore, the authors show that where second-order desires result from deliberations and public debates — whether these are habituated or institutionalized, or not — transformations in conceptions of gender can and do emerge.; Ann Brooks, Lionel Wee

Grounded in ongoing fieldwork inside Myanmar and amongst exiled Burmese communities, this article provides the first detailed account of the legal and human rights status of sexual orientation and gender identity minorities in Myanmar, with a focus on the abuses that they suffer. It also examines how Burmese activists overcame repressive laws to form an indigenous LGBT rights movement that has flourished since the start of the country’s recent political transition. The research thus sheds light not only on future challenges for LGBT rights activism, but also on the broader political mobilization of human rights in a changing Myanmar. The research also has implications for states during democratic transition.; The first author was funded by the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Grant, National University of Singapore, and the second author was funded by an Australian Postgraduate Award.

The study examines the buddy film genre and the representation of masculinity in relation to the homosocial and the homoerotic. As a genre, the buddy films focus on male relationships, thematically seeking to mediate the boundaries surrounding the homosocial continuum and the intimacy and eroticism implicit in male bonding. Theories of genre, gender and identity are used to analyze the construction of masculine identity within the films. By providing a qualitative analysis of films from the 1960s to contemporary times, the research establishes a relationship between social changes, attitudes toward men and depictions of men. The buddy films adapt to address changes in the representation of masculinity, embodied in the difference between the male couple in the films. The early films of the 1960s served as templates that deconstructed traditional representations of male identity through articulating the tension within homosocial relationships. However, in the later films this tension became a refle~ive convention, acting to undermine the eroticism onto a displaced Other. The buddy film genre highlights the tension inherent to the male masquerade. This tension is situated in the need to represent the protagonist's homosocial relationship...

Knowing and analyzing the way students of Universidad de La Sabana speak, as well as the meaning of their language according to their gender identity, has become the scope of this research. The Potter and Wetherell"s proposal for discourse analysis has been used in it. The results obtained show that men as well as women use just a few words when they speak. It also shows that their affection expressions don"t mean exactly what they want to say, but they do reveal some attitudes as regard their ethics and moral values.

This is the accepted manuscript version. The final version is available from Springer at http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10508-014-0385-0.; While reports showing a link between prenatal androgen exposure and human gender role behavior are consistent and the effects are robust, associations to gender identity or cross-gender identification are less clear. The aim of the current study was to investigate potential cross-gender identification in girls exposed prenatally to high concentrations of androgens due to classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Assessment included two standardized measures and a short parent interview assessing frequency of behavioral features of cross-gender identification as conceptualized in Part A of the diagnostic criteria for gender identity disorder (GID) in the DSM-IV-TR. Next, because existing measures may have conflated gender role behavior with gender identity and because the distinction is potentially informative, we factor analyzed items from the measures which included both gender identity and gender role items to establish the independence of the two constructs. Participants were 43 girls and 38 boys with CAH and 41 unaffected female and 31 unaffected male relatives, aged 4- to 11-years. Girls with CAH had more cross-gender responses than female controls on all three measures of cross-gender identification as well as on a composite measure of gender identity independent of gender role behavior. Furthermore...

Why, nearly two decades into a new political democratic dispensation, with a well-established constitution and legal system, is gender inequality still perpetuated? The education of learners in this regard has been identified as critical. Teaching-learning of gender equality could be challenging for teachers who have not reflected on their own gender identity. This article focuses on the findings of a recent empirical study which explored the lived experiences of patriarchy of selected female teachers situated in four provinces in South Africa. The findings show that the participating teachers' gender identity is shaped by their religious and cultural discourses. Working within a feminist paradigm, narrative inquiry was employed as the research methodology. Creating a safe space, the opportunity was provided to hear the teachers' voices in response to the master narrative of patriarchy. Sharing their self-narrative both with an internal audience (in their 'society-of-mind') and with an external audience allowed them to reclaim themselves as they discovered the extent to which it is possible to become disentangled from their 'other' (men). This process initiated self-empowerment of the teachers and contributed to building 'identity capital' as they reflected on their gender identity...
