Assuming science education in the early years as the stepping stone for the development of scientific and technological literacy, a teacher training program was developed with six kindergarten teachers in Portugal. Its aim was to promote the (re)construction of their subject content and pedagogical knowledge leading to innovative practices, based on the characterization of their profile, shortcomings and practices. Learning through practice was considered the most effective means to promote change in kindergarten teachers’ curricular approaches to science, hence the development of practical activities focusing on children’s understanding and requiring their scientific knowledge and enquiry processes. These include a teacher’s guide (presenting its objectives, concepts and teaching, learning and assessment strategies), a theoretical framework (presenting the concepts, known misconceptions and research references) and also the necessary didactic resources. The paper details the results of the developed teacher training program as well of the validation process of the designed teaching strategies.

Consensus exists among researchers and academics that science education, including chemistry education, is fundamental to the development of modern societies. Thus, investment becomes essential, from early years, in the education of informed citizens, prepared with scientific literacy competences and able to pursue an active, participative and responsible citizenship. In this context, school plays a major role and should provide chemistry education for all children. As such, it is necessary that teachers are able to meet this need and ensure the implementation of innovative practices, which, according to current guidelines, should be based in investigative activities of practical and experimental nature with a science-technology-society orientation, whose scientific contents are closely related to certain social phenomena (economics, politics and environment) and that meet the interests of children by helping them to explain and interpret the world around them. In this paper, we aim to present a review on the current guidelines for education in chemistry in the early years, that is, in pre-school and primary school, by applying a methodology based on practical and experimental work.

Purpose: The aim of this research is to develop and propose a conceptual framework that reflects the relationship between the implementation of quality management practices (QMPs) and their impact on the organizational performance of the Portuguese organizations. Design/Methodology/Approach: Based on the literature review carried out, we have identified the most common and used quality management practices. In the next phase we conducted semi-structured interviews with the Portuguese Quality Leaders in order to validate the work developed in the previous phase. In the third phase we conducted case studies in several types of companies with the aim of validating the theoretical work that had been developed in the previous phases. Currently we are in the phase four of the project that consists in the development of the conceptual model that will try to explain the relationship between the adoption of quality practices and approaches and the companies’ quality performance. This model will be statistically validated based on a survey that will be sent to the Portuguese companies. The statistical methodology that will be used is the structural equation modeling technique (SEM). Findings: It is expected that the results show a positive relationship between the implementation of quality management practices and the Portuguese organizations quality performance. Implications: This model could be used by the quality professionals as an approach for an efficient quality management implementation. Furthermore...

This paper presents an analysis of the contribution of the collaborative work developed by a Portuguese community, involving teachers and researchers, and created in the context of the project ‘Investigação e práticas lectivas em Educação em Ciência: Dinâmicas de interacção’ (IPEC), to the development of innovative practices in formal education. The community members developed, implemented, and evaluated curricular modules about sustainability, through continued interactions in an online platform and some face-to-face meetings. The case study revealed that the community created challenging innovative practices, since we uncover: a evidence of 13 of the 14 descriptors of innovative teaching practices taken into account for the analysis b disruptive practices when compared to traditional practices, presenting high risk-taking, large scope and complexity. In the final session, we present suggestions concerning design issues for web-based communities, such as the need to combine online interaction with face-to-face meetings.

It has been argued that most curricular practices in higher education settings are still strongly based upon the so-called telling paradigm rather than some sort of interactive or socializing way to foster better teaching and better learning. Besides, assessment practices are quite often oriented to grade students instead of being a means to engage them in deeper and more meaningful learning. At the same time, it is generally acknowledged that there is a need for studies that are based on stronger empirical data, collected in real classroom settings. In fact, it has been stated that without studies such as those one cannot get thorough descriptions of how one teaches, assesses, and learns in higher education classrooms. Putting it in another way: one cannot come up with credible statements on higher education curricular practices. Research reported in this paper was aimed at describing, analysing, and interpreting eight higher education teachers’ curricular practices within undergraduate courses of four knowledge domains: Arts and Humanities, Sciences and Technologies, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences. In particular, the study dealt with issues such as: a) teaching planning and organization; b) feedback nature, frequency, and distribution; c) classroom dynamics; d) teacher and student roles; e) tasks...

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics; This study aims to explore the impact of the HRM content (i.e. HRM practices) on individual (proximal) and organizational (distal) outcomes, in the hotel industry context, as well as the influence of the HRM process (i.e. HRM strength) as a mediator in the link between HRM practices and individual and organizational outcomes. A total of 202 responses from non-supervisory employees and 38 from supervisors, from 7 hotels in Algarve, were collected and analysed. HRM practices were grouped into three HRM bundles, through an exploratory factor analysis – Internal Labour Market, Employee Involvement and Meritocracy and Security. These HRM bundles were found to have a significant association with both proximal and distal outcomes. Specifically, Internal Labour Market was associated with Job Satisfaction, Organizational Citizenship Behaviour, Work Engagement and Innovative Behaviour; Employee Involvement was associated with Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment towards the Organization, Organizational Citizenship Behaviour, Work Engagement and Innovative Behaviour; and Meritocracy and Security was only significant with Organizational Commitment towards the Organization...

This thesis focuses on innovative teaching practices in university and they are associated to the categories derived from the concept of innovation built by the researcher, which will guide the construction process and analysis of data research such as: the ontological perspective, epistemological and methodological knowledge, intentionality, consciousness, autonomy, creativity, metacognition, transdisciplinarity, training, professional and educational practice. It is a paradigmatic trend which shows teacher training in the emancipatory perspective. The discussion is centered on complex thinking of the French thinker and philosopher Edgar Morin, and authors such as Capra, Prigogine and Maturana. Considering the complexitiy of the training process, the process of becoming professional and teaching practice, it seeks to base on a theoretical framework of the authors Alves and Oliveira; Anastasiou and Alves; Isaia and Bolzan; Cunha; Santos; Souza; Behrens; Lucarelli; Petraglia; Moraes; Moraes and Tower; Tower and Pujol; Magellan. The research takes place in the context of Pedagogy course, on the campus of Palmas Tocantins, with the participation of teachers that allowed this building and turned it into an unique experience. During the Fifth Replenishment Phase of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-5), portfolio monitoring and learning review were introduced as key components of knowledge management in the GEF Secretariat. These strategies were intended to address the need to generate knowledge on innovative practices, experiences, and lessons from projects financed by the GEF. In that regard, the Land Degradation focal area strategy for GEF-5 specifically included a learning objective on the catalytic effect of the GEF integrated Approaches, practices focused on integrating the management of land, soil, water, biodiversity, and biomass, in production systems (agriculture, rangelands, and forest landscapes). The focal area strategy embodies the landscape approach and integrated ecosystem management principles to maximize the global environmental benefits of combating land degradation. As a result of that focus, the strategy also addresses the need to harness and safeguard ecosystem services (carbon cycling, biodiversity...

Best management practices in green lodging are sustainable or “green” business strategies designed to enhance the lodging product from the perspective of owners, operators and guests. For guests, these practices should enhance their experience while for owners and operators, generate positive returns on investments. Best management practices in green lodging typically starts with a clear understanding of each lodging firm’s role in society, its impact on the environment and strategies developed to mitigate negative environmental externalities generated from the production of lodging goods and services. Negative externalities of hotel operations manifest themselves in energy and water usage, waste generation and air pollution. Hence, best management practices in green lodging are dynamic, cost effective, innovative, stakeholder driven and environmentally sound technical and behavioral solutions that attempt to ameliorate or eliminate the negative environmental externalities associated with lodging operations, while simultaneously generate positive returns on green investments. Thus, best management practices in green lodging should reduce lodging firms’ operating costs, increase guest satisfaction, reduce or eliminate the negative environmental impacts associated with hotel operations while simultaneously enhance business operations.

Creativity is a universal activity, essential in an evolutionary perspective, to adaptation and sustainability. This manuscript on the sociology of creativity has three purposes: (1) to develop the argument that key factors in creative activity are socially based and developed; hence, sociology can contribute significantly to understanding and explaining human creativity; (2) to present a systems approach which enables us to link in a systematic and coherent way the disparate social factors and mechanisms that are involved in creative activity and to describe and explain creativity; (3) to illustrate a sociological systems theory’s (Actor-Systems-Dynamics) conceptualization of multiple interrelated institutional, cultural, and interaction factors and mechanisms and their role in creativity and innovative development with respect to diverse empirical bases. The approach shares with key psychological theory approaches in the area consideration of key concepts such as “persons”, “processes”, “products”, and “places “but extends these to include additional factors such as social structures and resources, social powers, selection mechanisms (acceptance or rejection), and institutionalization. Moreover, the complex of factors identified and analyzed are specified in this article in sociological terms. The resulting model enables one to address and answer key questions relating to creative actions and innovative developments such as “who” is involved...

The paper analyzes innovative psychiatric practices that took place in Argentina during the sixties and seventies at the Hospital Jose Esteves in the province of Buenos Aires. Objective: To present the coexistence of different paradigms related to mental health in the same institution and to analyze the complexities generated by this scenario. Methodology: This study uses primary sources in the form of medical records of patients admitted to the hospital between 1960 and 1979. The medical records were cross-referenced with publications of newspapers and magazines of the time. Results: The analysis shows that the political environment during the era of militarydictatorship —characterized by ideological persecution and the inhibition of political expression— influenced the development of innovative psychiatric practices. At the same time, instances ofanti-Semitism and ideological persecution among health workers affected therapeutic approaches. Conclusions: While the introduction of innovative practices in mental health led to someresistance among the more orthodox psychiatrists, the presence of different paradigms shows a plan, both political and professional, to transform psychiatry and admission policy in Argentina.; El trabajo analiza prácticas psiquiátricas innovadoras que se llevaron a cabo en Argentina durante las décadas del sesenta y setenta...

The homebuilding industry has held a dominant presence in the U.S. economy over the past century. It has been a source of profit, shelter and jobs for countless Americans. In order to meet the needs of an ever-burgeoning population, the industry itself has grown into a complex and vast linkage of developers, designers, contractors and regulatory officials whose job it is to build the houses that most Americans live in. Yet the growth and success of the homebuilding industry in America has not come without repercussions. Today, more than ever, we are cognizant of the environmental impacts that the homebuilding industry is having on our physical landscape and our natural resources. As a response to this cognizance, there has been a growing movement towards less environmentally harmful methods of design and construction. Many, if not most, of these methods require substantial changes to the way the industry currently builds homes. In this sense, they are considered innovations. This thesis will provide an illustration of the process of innovation and how it diffuses throughout an existing industry in addition to recapping historical arguments for why the U.S. homebuilding industry has long been characterized as resistant to change. The industry...

The paper aims to present some eco-innovative practices regarding Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). The study also focuses on potential benefits for the actors who implement these practices, mainly with reference to companies. After a literature review on the actual importance of SCP and on the effects of eco-innovation tools and policies on companies, authors present the developed eco-innovation practices in three focus areas related to sustainable consumption and production. The aim of the study is to contribute to literature studies on SCP with the development of eco-innovative practices resulting by the integration of existing tools, by pointing out and valorizing their potentials and synergies. These practices have been pointing out in the framework of the international European project. Three focus areas are involved by the practices: sustainability of products and services, sustainability of production processes and sustainable management of industrial areas. Authors developed four eco innovative practices resulting from the integration of 15 existing tools. These practices offer many opportunities to many actors, mainly companies and public authorities, in order to achieve environmental and competitive benefits and implement eco-innovation principles with a cooperative and shared approach.
