Poster (and extended abstract) presented at the 13th International Conference "Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA 2014)" held on 16-20th June, University of Zadar, Zadar, Croatia; The aim of this project is to find out if and how Institutional Repositories (IR) are using alternative metrics or Altmetrics (besides usage statistics and citation counts) as a value-added service to showcase their content impact and give some hints on how this tool can be used to supplement the traditional research performance assessment exercise in an institution. Altmetrics can provide a measure of impact for all non-journal scholarly works available in Open Access (OA), like usage statistics, but it can go further by contextualizing the readership of an author’s research output. The increasing importance of Altmetrics indicators led to its inclusion in the 2014 edition of the Ranking Web of Repositories. This project promises to be useful for repositories managers in that it gives some examples of good practices of implementation of Altmetrics along with other metrics in IRs which can help to increase the content, foster the adoption of OA by authors, contribute to the visibility of the institution and meet the funding agencies requirements, thus making a strong case for the relevance of IRs in the context of the research assessment process.

The voluntary uptake of institutional repositories by academics has been disappointing. This paper describes the repository situation in Australia, and looks at the mandates in place for academics to use them. It then explores the inherent conflict between the institutional requirements of reporting and the ‘invisible college’ – the allegiances academics hold with their research colleagues. It argues that by forcing academics to report in a fashion at odds with their natural flow of work and community, the potential for widespread uptake of repositories as a method of achieving open access is unlikely to succeed. ¶ The introduction in Australia of a new scholarly output reporting system in 2008 has the potential to increase the awareness and use of digital repositories across the academic community. There are, however, two potential problems with using reporting as a vehicle for promoting open access; the system has been developed with limited consultation or consideration of the way different disciplines conduct their work, and the reporting requirement means the papers that must be uploaded into repositories will need to be the publisher’s versions. The new system will result in academics complying with the minimum reporting requirements...

The World Wide Web has provided us with a unique opportunity for the dissemination of information globally and its impact on the activities of the research community has been stupendous. Ten years after the first wave of migration of online research to the web, we are now seeing the evolution of Web2 and Library 2.0 in which the expansion of web discovery tools is growing at an ever-increasing rate. In an age in which most students are now ‘web-native’, the importance of e-research as the most prevalent method of learning cannot be overlooked. Institutional repositories are providing academics and librarians with a means to showcase the intellectual output of their organizations. The data retrieved from repositories such as Digital Commons are harvested by Google and other search engines making it searchable via the most popular channels of contemporary e-research. (Over 85% of hits to most institutional repositories come directly from Google and Google Scholar). With the investment of the Australian government in the progressive development and critical evaluation of academic research via DEST and the Research Quality Framework, the business of publishing research has taken on a vital new phase where content that is made available to the web can have an impact at the highest level...

Major research universities are grappling with their response to the deluge of scientific data emerging through research by their faculty. Many are looking to their libraries and the institutional repository as a solution. Scientific data introduces substantial challenges that the document-based institutional repository may not be suited to deal with. The Sustainable Environment - Actionable Data (SEAD) Virtual Archive specifically addresses the challenges of ???long tail??? scientific data. In this paper, we propose requirements, policy and architecture to support not only the preservation of scientific data today using institutional repositories, but also its rich access and use into the future.; This work funded by the National Science Foundation under cooperative agreement #OCI0940824 and by the grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, award #4112440.

After ten years from Berlin’s declaration, it could be the adequate time to define some repositories evaluation indicators, focus on internal management and users’ satisfaction. The approach is that even there is not an only way to evaluate institutional repositories, some general criteria could be given. After making a review of the recent literature about repositories indicators...

Metadata is a core issue for the creation of repositories. Different institutional repositories have chosen and use different metadata models, elements and values for describing the range of digital objects they store. Thus, this paper analyzes the current use of metadata describing those Learning Objects that some open higher educational institutions' repositories include in their collections. The goal of this work is to identify and analyze the different metadata models being used to describe educational features of those specific digital educational objects (such as audience, type of educational object, learning objectives, etc.). Also discussed is the concept and typology of Learning Objects (LO) through their use in University Repositories. We will also examine the usefulness of specifically describing those learning objects, setting them apart from other kind of documents included in the repository, mainly scholarly publications and research results of the Higher Education institution.

Select academic journal publishers and subject repositories have implemented tools that allow authors to see their “impact” at an article level. These usage indicators, called “altmetrics,” measure article citations, download counts, pageviews, bookmarks on academic social reference manager sites, and mentions on Facebook and Twitter. Some altmetrics have been shown to predict the likelihood of papers receiving more traditional measures of impact such as citations (Eysenbach, 2011), and a growing number of scholars are calling for altmetrics’ recognition as a supplementary measure of an article’s influence (Neylon & Wu, 2009; Priem et al, 2010; Taraborielli, 2008). Should institutional repositories offer altmetrics for the research they hold? If so, which metrics? Which tools are best suited to aid in implementation? What barriers to participation exist for repository managers? Using examples from the research literature, academic publishers, and subject and institutional repositories, we explore these questions."

Institutional Open Access repositories are becoming established as an important part of the university library and information services infrastructure. While early efforts to populate them with content have concentrated on the deposit of peer-reviewed research papers, there is a growing awareness of their potential as repositories of data and other non-text materials, and consequently a need to develop strategies and procedures that can realise this potential. Chemistry as a discipline has been slower than the physical and biomedical sciences to adopt and exploit Open Access concepts in the handling of experimental data and research publications. Chemical information is essential to many sciences outside chemistry, and the reporting of the synthesis and properties of new chemical compounds is central to this. But most of the essential experimental data associated with peer-reviewed publications from chemistry departments are never communicated to the scientific community. These data are all available in high-quality electronic form in the laboratories but there is no effective method for archiving them or making them openly accessible. The SPECTRa (Submission, Preservation, and Exposure of Chemistry Teaching and Research Data) project addressed this problem. It was a JISC-funded 18-month collaboration...

The institutional repository has become the locus for holding the academic production of universities and research institutes, becoming a valuable tool for the dissemination of scientific information. However, because of the technological dynamism, repositories, as computerized tools, require constant updating. Similarly, to serve the dissemination of scientific information, they should be in line with the trends of science. In this sense, this study aims to survey and analyze the adherence of Brazilian repositories regarding: Open Data; Open archives; Open Access; Open science; Digital curation and e-science. To this end, a quantitative approach was adopted, administering a survey to the managers of Brazilian institutional repositories. The research revealed a still-incipient stage, but promising in relation to adherence to the trends in science, where the largest support is given to Open Access. With the worldwide growth in the number of repositories...

Institutional repositories have played an important role in disseminating scientific output of educational institutions and research expanding the visibility of both the author and the institution. Nowadays, technological advances have enabled both the insertion of university publishers in the use of digital editing processes and the increased visibility, accessibility, usage and impact of books. University publishers have a key role to promote the diffusion of scientific production and are characterized by covering all areas of knowledge, publishing quality texts, peer-reviewed and written by researchers with different institutional affiliations. The present study aims to verify the compliance of publishers to the open access movement to scientific information through the presence of titles published in collections of IR. The objective is also to know the policy of publishers and institutions focused on deposit of books and chapters in these repositories. To do so, it has been selected 31 repositories from  universities and research institutions as the sample, having as criteria the availability in their collections of books and book chapters. The repository of the Federal University of Bahia (Universidade Federal da Bahia) stands out by providing the largest number of books and chapters - 307 items - followed by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária) with 120. It is concluded that the participation of the production of university presses is still timid in the collections of IR...

Institutional repositories are databases that aim to store the scientific output of an institution. In this context, self-archiving is the mechanism of deposit in institutional repositories recommended by the open access movement to scientific information, by following the strategies of Green Road. Self-archiving is held by the author. The adoption of self-archiving by institutions aims to guarantee deposits in institutional repositories, so that the quantity of their documents is maximized. Reasons that may prevent self-archiving: ignorance on the part of the authors about the open access movement, on issues related to copyright, the process of peer review, the impact of the work in open access, among other factors. This research intends to verify the existence of self-archiving policies in Brazilian and Portuguese institutional repositories, as well as the identification of materials to support the author to carry out such activity. For the study there were considered the Brazilian and Portuguese repositories registered in the Directory of Open Access Repositories - OpenDOAR.; Os repositórios institucionais são bases de dados que têm por objetivo armazenar a produção científica de uma instituição. Presented at the CRIS2012 Conference in Prague.-- 6 pages.-- Full conference programme available at: http://www.cris2012.org/findByFilter.do?categoryId=1158; In Norway the institutional repositories are seen as the most important piece of the Open Access infrastructure puzzle. The Norwegian national CRIS is the single point of entry for all Norwegian research, and this can be used to increase the number of Open Access publications in the institutional repositories. The CRIS is used as a delivering-portal for full-text, and there is a great potential in identifying the large portion of Norwegian research results that are candidates for self-archiving, but for some reason do not end up in the repositories today. The infrastructure is strengthened through three steps; building an easy route for data from the CRIS to the repositories, identify the portion of candidates for self-archiving, and finally, distribute the content of the repositories to the rest of the world.

Delivered at the CRIS2014 Conference in Rome; published in Procedia Computer Science 33 (Jul 2014).; Contains conference paper (8 pages) and presentation (15 slides).; Much has been said in recent times about the alleged dichotomy between Institutional Repositories (IRs) and Current Research Information Systems (CRISs). According to this highly ideological argument, IRs would be the platforms to support the noncommercial initiative jointly carried out by HEIs – and specifically their Libraries – in order to freely disseminate their research outputs, whereas CRISs would support the whole institutional research information management (RIM) with special emphasis on projects and funding. RIM being an activity oriented towards reporting for research assessment exercises and thus tightly connected to the institutional funding, the support from the Management at HEIs for CRIS implementation and operation and for the Research Office traditionally in charge of such tasks would be much higher than for the much less relevant IR. Moreover, the awareness of researchers and scholars towards such platforms will usually be much higher for the CRIS – from whose accurate and complete depiction of their research activity their salaries will ultimately depend – and it won't be unusual to collect complaints on the need to ensure that both systems are simultaneously fed with the appropriate...
