In this work, diagnosis of boron (B) nutritional status based on leaf B concentrations were compared for the most common leaf sampling times for olive trees, January and July. For this purpose field experiments were conducted over four years (2003-06) in two rainfed olive groves located in Mirandela and Bragança, in north-eastern Portugal. Leaf samples were collected in January and July and analysed for B by standard procedures. Fruit harvest occurred in December of each year. The crops followed typical alternate fruiting cycles. During the four years of the study, mean olive yields in the Bragança orchard, for instance, fluctuated, yielding 3.6, 28.1, 5.5 and 22.7 kg tree-1. Yield variation per individual tree was also great. In the Bragança orchard and in the 2004 harvest, for instance, yields ranged from 1.2 to 52.7 kg tree-1. Leaf B concentrations also varied greatly between individual trees. In the Bragança orchard in the July sampling of 2004, values for individual trees varied from 12.2 and 23.7 mg B kg-1. From a total of 16 scatterplots generated from the relationship between leaf B concentrations and olive yields, 10 significant linear relationships were established; six of them were related to July sampling dates and four were related to January dates. The number of significant linear relationships established between leaf B concentration and olive yield was used as a criterion of the accuracy of the B nutritional diagnosis...

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed mortality associated with the mid-July 1995 heat wave in Chicago. METHODS: Analyses focused on heat-related deaths, as designated by the medical examiner, and on the number of excess deaths. RESULTS: In July 1995, there were 514 heat-related deaths and 696 excess deaths. People 65 years of age or older were overrepresented and Hispanic people underrepresented. During the most intense heat (July 14 through 20), there were 485 heat-related deaths and 739 excess deaths. CONCLUSIONS: The methods used here provide insight into the great impact of the Chicago heat wave on selected populations, but the lack of methodological standards makes comparisons across geographical areas problematic.

Heat stroke is associated with prolonged exposures to high air temperatures that usually occur in the summer months of July and August in Tokyo, Japan. Also during July and August, residents of Tokyo are often exposed simultaneously to high concentrations of air pollutants. To assess the impacts of these combined exposures, daily numbers of heat stroke emergency transport cases/million residents for Tokyo were stratified by gender and three groups: 0-14, 15-64; and > 65 years of age, for the months of July and August in 1980-1995. A regression model was constructed using daily maximum temperature (Tmax) and daily average concentrations of NO2 and O3 as model covariates. Classification indices were added to make it possible to compare the expected number of heat stroke cases by age and gender. Lag times of 1-4 days in Tmax and air quality covariates and terms to account for interactions between pairs of model covariates were also included as additional risk factors. Generalized linear models (GLMs), assuming a Poisson error structure for heat stroke emergency transport cases, were used to determine which covariates were significant risk factors for heat stroke for the three age groups of males and females. Same-day Tmax and concentrations of NO2 were the most significant risk factors for heat stroke in all age groups of males and females. The number of heat stroke emergency transport cases/million residents was greater in males than in females in the same age groups. The smallest number of heat stroke emergency transport cases/million residents occurred for females 0-14 years of age and the greatest number of heat stroke emergency transport cases/million residents occurred for males > 65 years of age.

Taiwan had been free of indigenous human and animal rabies case since canine rabies was eliminated in 1961. In July 2013, rabies was confirmed among three wild ferret-badgers, prompting public health response to prevent human rabies cases. This descriptive study reports the immediate response to the reemergence of rabies in Taiwan. Response included enhanced surveillance for human rabies cases by testing stored cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from patients with encephalitides of unknown cause by RT-PCR, prioritizing vaccine use for postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) during periods of vaccine shortage and subsequent expansion of PEP, surveillance of animal bites using information obtained from vaccine application, roll out of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with vaccine stock restoration, surveillance for adverse events following immunization (AEFI), and ensuring surge capacity to respond to general public inquiries by phone and training for healthcare professionals. Enhanced surveillance for human rabies found no cases after testing 205 stored CSF specimens collected during January 2010–July 2013. During July 16 to December 28, 2013, we received 8,241 rabies PEP application; 6,634 (80.5%) were consistent with recommendations. Among the 6,501persons who received at least one dose of rabies vaccine postexposure...

This paper examines whether social interactions and cultural practices affect political views and behavior in society. We investigate the issue by documenting a major social and cultural event at different stages in life: the Fourth of July celebrations in the United States during the 20th century. Using absence of rainfall as a proxy for participation in the event, we find that days without rain on Fourth of July in childhood shift adult views and voting in favor of the Republicans and increase turnout in presidential elections. The effects we estimate are highly persistent throughout life and originate in early age. Rain-free Fourth of Julys experienced as an adult also make it more likely that people identify as Republicans, but the effect depreciates substantially after a few years. Taken together, the evidence suggests that political views and behavior derive from social and cultural experience in early childhood, and that Fourth of July shapes the political landscape in the Unites States.

The goal of this thesis is to understand the imagined and subjective meaning of the action of the cuban revolutionary of the 26th July movement during insurrection rebellion (fight ou dispute)(1952 to 1958). Our hypothesis is that this social action was marked by political revolutionary asceticism, that is, by one kind of action in that the agent feels as an instrument of pure and noble values of the revolutionary cause. The ascetic revolutionary is quite different from the pragmatic revolutionary since its action is not faced as a rational way to reach the aim systematically desired. On the contrary, its action is, mainly, a task to be accomplished. We analyzed, from this point, the revolutionary sacrifice as a way of bringing back to the corrupted world the pure and noble values and we noticed how the ideal of the body was presented in the discourses of the Cuban rebellions.; O objetivo de nossa tese é compreender o sentido imaginado e subjetivo da ação do revolucionário cubano do Movimento 26 de Julho durante o período de luta insurrecional (1952 a 1958).

Thomas Scott (1746-1824) was a politician and judge originally from Scotland. He came to Canada in 1800 after accepting the appointment of Attorney General of Upper Canada, and in 1806 was promoted to Chief Justice of Upper Canada. The declaration of war in 1812 brought into question the loyalty of the colony’s population, who were largely born in America. As concerns over allegiance intensified, the government sought out traitors in an attempt to make an example of them and deter others. The subsequent trials of citizens accused of treason resulted in 15 convictions, including Jacob Overholser. These trials were intended to assert the authority of the state, but also to demonstrate clemency. Only 8 of the convicts were executed, with the rest being banished from the colony. Scott supported these measures, although they were largely initiated by Attorney General John Beverly Robinson. Thomas Scott retired in 1816 and died in 1824.; Consists of 4 photocopied letters from Thomas Scott, Chief Justice of Upper Canada, to Secretary General Drummond, concerning traitors and treason. The letters are dated July 5, 1814, July 8, 1814 (2), and July 14, 1814. The July 5th letter is titled “copy of a dispatch from …Bathurst…of insufficiency of evidence to convict traitors” and “Relative to the Traitors who were condemned at Ancaster”. The July 14th letter is titled “The Instruments of Reference not made out in due form”.

This thesis investigated the current patterns around San Clemente Island, California. The data were from a mooring located at Eel Point, during the period July 10, 2006 to July 23, 2007. The currents were dominated by strong poleward flow along isobaths. Semi-diurnal and diurnal tides dominated the kinetic energy and rotary spectra. Clockwise rotation dominated the rotary spectra with inertial peaks in both the near surface and near bottom depths. There were on average 2-3 current reversals every three months which appear to be unrelated to the wind stress curl. The stratification was described for the year, with one upwelling event occurring in late spring. Using wavelet analysis, it was shown that inertial/diurnal and semi-diurnal energy were present intermittently throughout the water column. The strongest modes of energy were associated with the near bottom depths. Wind stress was poorly related to the currents. Oscillations with a 2-3 day period were observed in the alongshore flow. These lasted for approximately 10 days in April 2007 and are referred to as the April event. This event was observed from mid-water to the bottom. The event had maximum velocities of 30 cm/s at mid-water and upward phase speed of 0.12 cm/s. These oscillations were rectilinear at mid-water and became counter clockwise with depth. It is speculated that this event may have been a coastally trapped wave but...

We report observations of Neptune made in H-(1.4-1.8 {\mu}m) and K'-(2.0-2.4 {\mu}m) bands on 14 and 16 July 2009 from the 10-m W.M. Keck II Telescope using the near-infrared camera NIRC2 coupled to the Adaptive Optics (AO) system. We track the positions of 54 bright atmospheric features over a few hours to derive their zonal and latitudinal velocities, and perform radiative transfer modeling to measure the cloud-top pressures of 50 features seen simultaneously in both bands. We observe one South Polar Feature (SPF) on 14 July and three SPFs on 16 July at ~65 deg S. The SPFs observed on both nights are different features, consistent with the high variability of Neptune's storms. There is significant dispersion in Neptune's zonal wind velocities about the smooth Voyager wind profile fit of Sromovsky et al., Icarus 105, 140 (1993), much greater than the upper limit we expect from vertical wind shear, with the largest dispersion seen at equatorial and southern mid-latitudes. Comparison of feature pressures vs. residuals in zonal velocity from the smooth Voyager wind profile also directly reveals the dominance of mechanisms over vertical wind shear in causing dispersion in the zonal winds. Vertical wind shear is not the primary cause of the difference in dispersion and deviation in zonal velocities between features tracked in H-band on 14 July and those tracked in K'-band on 16 July. Dispersion in the zonal velocities of features tracked over these short time periods is dominated by one or more mechanisms...

In July 2007, the blazar 3C 454.3 underwent a flare in the optical, reaching R~13 on July 19. Then the optical flux decreased by one magnitude, being R~14 when the source was detected by the gamma-ray satellite AGILE, that observed the source on July 24-30. At the same time, the Swift satellite performed a series of snapshots. We can construct the simultaneous spectral energy distribution using optical, UV, X-ray and gamma-ray data. These shows that an increased gamma-ray flux is accompanied by a weaker optical/X-ray flux with respect to the flare observed in the Spring 2005 by INTEGRAL and Swift. This confirms earlier suggestions about the behaviour of the jet of 3C 454.3.; Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, MNRAS (Letters) in press (minor revision)

The Athens Neutron Monitor Data Processing (ANMODAP) Center recorded an unusual Forbush decrease with a sharp enhancement of cosmic ray intensity right after the main phase of the Forbush decrease on 16 July 2005, followed by a second decrease within less than 12 h. This exceptional event is neither a ground level enhancement nor a geomagnetic effect in cosmic rays. It rather appears as the effect of a special structure of interplanetary disturbances originating from a group of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the 13-14 July 2005 period. The initiation of the CMEs was accompanied by type IV radio bursts and intense solar flares (SFs) on the west solar limb (AR 786); this group of energetic phenomena appears under the label of Solar Extreme Events of July 2005. We study the characteristics of these events using combined data from Earth (the ARTEMIS IV radioheliograph, the Athens Neutron Monitor (ANMODAP)), space (WIND/WAVES) and data archives. We propose an interpretation of the unusual Forbush profile in terms of a magnetic structure and a succession of interplanetary shocks interacting with the magnetosphere.; Comment: Advances in Space Research, Volume 43, Issue 4, p. 600-604

Objective: To examine trends in the use of oral conventional, depot and atypical antipsychotic medications in Australia between July 1995 and December 2001. Method: For each six-month interval between July 1995 and December 2001, prescription data obtained from the Health Insurance Commission of Australia were converted into a measure of drug utilization expressed as the number of defined daily doses per thousand population per day (DDDs/1000/day). Results: Between July 1995 and December 2001, use of atypical medications increased from an estimated 0.27 to an estimated 3.83 DDDs/1000/day. Use of oral conventional medications decreased from 1.76 to 0.91 DDDs/1000/day, while use of depot medications decreased from 1.38 to 0.96 DDDs/1000/day. During the latter half of 2001, atypical medications accounted for 67.3%, oral conventional medications for 16.0%, and depot medications for 16.7% of total prescriptions for antipsychotic medications dispensed through community pharmacies in Australia. The increased use of atypical medications was accounted for largely by a dramatic increase in the use of olanzapine. Between July 2001 and December 2001, prescriptions for olanzapine accounted for 65.0% of total prescriptions for atypical antipsychotic medications. Conclusions: The results of the present study confirm that atypical antipsychotic medications have replaced conventional medications as the first-line pharmacological treatment for psychotic illness in Australia. While this change in prescribing practice is gratifying...
