Many people try to find e-Learning systems and learning objects on the Web. But that can be very difficult to find what we need with the actual search engines. How can someone quickly find and with meaning the learning objects existing in the Web? Sistemas de Aprendizagem Adaptativos e Inteligentes, tema de pesquisa recente no mundo, são ambientes com arquitetura e algoritmos específicos, que consideram as características individuais de cada estudante para selecionar o objeto de aprendizagem mais adequado a ser oferecido ao aluno. O rápido desenvolvimento da infraestrutura sem fio e o amplo uso de dispositivos móveis na vida diária das pessoas motivam as pesquisas relativas ao uso desses dispositivos na educação, proporcionando o m-learning. Assim, relacionado a essas linhas de pesquisa, este trabalho propõe a arquitetura AdaptMLearning, elaborada para prover a aprendizagem em plataformas móveis e não móveis, considerando a seleção de objetos de aprendizagem que melhor se adaptam a diversos aspectos, tais como: dados sobre a tecnologia utilizada para acesso; informações sobre o estilo de aprendizagem de um estudante; desempenho e tempo associados à interação do estudante com o objeto de aprendizagem; conhecimentos adquiridos pelo estudante em consonância ao conteúdo do curso; e a garantia de que não só o professor possa configurar as adaptações a serem oferecidas ao seu curso, como também o aluno tenha a possibilidade de informar sua preferência pelos tipos de mídia. The association of human properties and behaviours to virtual entities, namely to agents or computees, has been made, almost exclusively, by an evaluation function that measures such properties, grading it. In this paper, it is presented an alternative way to analyse intelligence, behind an agent’s knowledge, through the use of anthropopathic functions. The enforcement of such attitudes is made via the extensions of the functions or predicates referred to above, which make the agents or computees body of knowledge, and are to be applied in distance learning systems embedded in websites prepared for medical education.

Thesis proposal.; Reinforcement learning systems are interesting because they meet three major criteria for animate control, namely: competence, responsiveness, and autonomous adaptability. Unfortunately, these systems have not been scaled to complex task domains. For my thesis I propose to study three separate problems that arise when scaling reinforcement learning systems to larger task domains. These are: the propagation problem, the transfer problem, and the attention problem. The propagation problem arises when the number of states in the problem domain is scaled and the distance the system must go for reinforcement is increased. The transfer problem occurs when reinforcement learning systems are applied to problem solving tasks where its desirable to transfer knowledge useful for solving one problem to another. The attention problem arises when a system with a fixed length input vector is applied to a task domains containing an arbitrary number of objects. Each of these problems are discussed along with possible approaches for their solution. A schedule for performing the research is also given.

Q-Learning is a method for solving reinforcement learning problems. Reinforcement learning problems require improvement of behaviour based on received rewards. Q-Learning has the potential to reduce robot programming effort and increase the range of robot abilities. However, most currentQ-learning systems are not suitable for robotics problems: they treat continuous variables, for example speeds or positions, as discretised values. Discretisation does not allow smooth control and does not fully exploit sensed information. A practical algorithm must also cope with real-time constraints, sensing and actuation delays, and incorrect sensor data. ¶ This research describes an algorithm that deals with continuous state and action variables without discretising. The algorithm is evaluated with vision-based mobile robot and active head gaze control tasks. As well as learning the basic control tasks, the algorithm learns to compensate for delays in sensing and actuation by predicting the behaviour of its environment. Although the learned dynamic model is implicit in the controller, it is possible to extract some aspects of the model. The extracted models are compared to theoretically derived models of environment behaviour. ¶ The difficulty of working with robots motivates development of methods that reduce experimentation time. This research exploits Q-learning’s ability to learn by passively observing the robot’s actions—rather than necessarily controlling the robot. Insbesondere wird Lernen im Kontext von Organisationssystemen - das organisationale Lernen - fokussiert. Dabei wird Lernen als Änderung der systemischen Erwartungsstruktur definiert, die aufgrund erwartungsabweichender Kommunikationen erfolgt. Es wird eine Metatheorie von Evaluation entfaltet, die evaluative Operationen als konstitutiven Bestandteil und funktionales Element organisationaler Lernprozesse begreift. Evaluation erscheint als spezifische Operationsform eines Systems: als reflexiv-bewertende Form der Kommunikation. Beyond data storage and information retrieval: How to fit e-learning approaches into knowledge management structures E-learning systems have frequently been treated as something different than knowledge management systems. Organizations tend to see both developments as separate issues with different responsibilities and tasks. Knowledge management is typically started in initiatives high up in the organization, often directly below the executive level while the responsibility for e-learning lies within the training department. The paper attempts to examine the links and similarities between e-learning systems and knowledge management systems. Coming from an information systems background many known structures reappear when looking closer at e-learning systems. Three different e-learning approaches can be identified, the instructionoriented, the communication-oriented and the information-oriented approach. In dieser Dissertation wird ein Verfahren, der sogenannte eLS-Baukasten, zur automatisierten Generierung, Verwaltung und Inhalteaufbereitung, sowie webbasierten Präsentation der Inhalte derartiger Systeme vorgestellt. Die generierten e-Learning-Systeme zeichnen sich durch eine komponentenbasierte Architektur aus und umfassen ein mächtiges Wissens- sowie Benutzermodell, welche die Abbildung von Lernstrategien und -interaktionsformen erlauben, die aktuellen kognitionspsychologischen Gesichtspunkten entsprechen. The software development process plays a crucial role in the design and development of a high-quality e-learning system. However, to date, there is no comprehensive comparative study of open source software (OSS) development process for different OS e-learning systems. This hinders the development of a generalized OSS development process, a key requisite for rapidly developing highquality OS e-learning systems. This paper provides a full analysis of different existing and successful OS e-learning software systems and the best practices followed in the e-learning development. In particular, this paper investigates the software development activities of Moodle, Dokeos and ILIAS. An activity flow representation that describes their current development practices is constructed individually for all three OS e-learning systems. Em Aprendizado de Máquina - AM não existe um único algoritmo que é sempre melhor para todos os domínios de aplicação. Na prática, diversas pesquisas mostram que Redes Neurais Artificiais - RNAs têm um 'bias' indutivo apropriado para diversos domínios. Em razão disso, RNAs têm sido aplicadas na resolução de vários problemas com desempenho satisfatório. Sistemas de AM simbólico possuem um 'bias' indutivo menos flexível do que as RNAs. Enquanto que as RNAs são capazes de aprender qualquer função, sistemas de AM simbólico geralmente aprendem conceitos que podem ser descritos na forma de hiperplanos. Por outro lado, sistemas de AM simbólico representam o conceito induzido por meio de estruturas simbólicas, as quais são geralmente compreensíveis pelos seres humanos. Assim, sistemas de AM simbólico são preferíveis quando é essencial a compreensibilidade do conceito induzido. RNAs carecem da capacidade de explicar suas decisões, uma vez que o conhecimento é codificado na forma de valores de seus pesos e 'thresholds'. A construção de material didático é bastante difícil, mas avaliá-lo é ainda mais complexo. Saber como o aluno absorveu o conteúdo, como reagiu a ele e quanto tempo foi gasto durante o uso de cada objeto de aprendizagem pode ajudar a refletir se o conteúdo está adequado às necessidades deste aluno. Além disso, considerar as diferentes características cognitivas de aprendizado e, conseqüentemente, possibilitar adaptações através de ajustes no conteúdo didático digital auxiliaria a avaliação do professor em um curso disponível através da web. Este trabalho propõe um sistema de acompanhamento (MSys) que, através do monitoramento do nível de utilização das atividades desenvolvidas pelos alunos, deverá apresentar para o professor, assim como para o próprio aluno, resultados resumidos e comparativos do acompanhamento. This paper describes a communication model to integrate repositories of programming problems with other e-Learning software components. The motivation for this work comes from the EduJudge project that aims to connect an existing repository of programming problems to learning management systems. When trying to use the existing repositories of learning objects we realized that they are mainly specialized search engines and lack features for integration with other e-Learning systems. With this model we intend to clarify the main features of a programming problem repository, in order to enable the design and development of software components that use it. The two main points of this model are the definition of programming problems as learning objects and the definition of the core functions exposed by the repository. In both cases, this model follows the existing specifications of the IMS standard and proposes extensions to deal with the special requirements of automatic evaluation and grading of programming exercises. As the efficiency of neuromorphic systems improves, biologically-inspired learning techniques are becoming more and more appealing for various computing applications, ranging from pattern and character recognition to general purpose reconfigurable logic. Due to their functional similarities to synapses in the brain, memristors are becoming a key element in the hardware realization of perceptron-based learning systems. By pairing memristive devices with a perceptron-based neuron model, previous work has shown that an efficient and low area neural logic block (NLB) can be developed. However, the use of a simple threshold activation function has limited the set of learnable functions for a single block, resulting in the need for multiple layers to implement certain functions. This complicates the training process, decreases the scalability of the system, and increases the overall energy and delay of large networks. In this work, three novel NLB designs are presented that overcome the limitations of previous hardware NLBs. First, an Adaptive Neural Logic Block (ANLB) and Robust Adaptive Neural Logic Block (RANLB) are proposed. Reinforcement learning systems improve behaviour based on scalar rewards from a critic. In this work vision based behaviours, servoing and wandering, are learned through a Q-learning method which handles continuous states and actions. There is no requirement for camera calibration, an actuator model, or a knowledgeable teacher. Learning through observing the actions of other behaviours improves learning speed. Experiments were performed on a mobile robot using a real-time vision system.

To transform education in this country, South African teachers need to be appropriately equipped to meet the evolving challenges and needs of the country. The national policy framework for teacher education and development is an attempt to address the need for suitably qualified teachers in South Africa. Its aim is to improve the quality of education by focusing on the professional development of teachers. This article attempts to address the following research problem: Does continuing professional development for teachers (CPDT), as stipulated by the national policy framework, have the potential to contribute to the development of teachers as proposed by social learning systems? The answer to this question has the potential to inform and influence the policy and its implementation. The answer also describes how conceptual frameworks for learning in Wenger's social learning systems conflict with effective professional development (PD) programmes and CPDT.
