Nanotechnology, which involves creating and manipulating organic and inorganic matter from the molecular to the nanoscale level, is an emerging, enabling technology that is receiving enormous amounts of attention in industrial and scientific communities. It is an umbrella term for a wide range of science and technologies. Significant and rapid advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology have been made in the past two decades. Numerous potential applications have been identified, with a promise to transform virtually every industry. These industries include aerospace, agriculture, biotechnology, electronics, energy and environment, information technology and telecommunication, materials science and manufacturing, and medicine. Governments from developed nations around the globe and private investors, including venture capitalists, are investing heavily in nanotechnology. Established companies and entrepreneurial startup firms are now exploring options for commercializing nanotechnology innovations. This thesis was initiated to investigate the current state of nanotechnology commercialization with respect to identifying the differences in commercialization strategies between startup firms and large corporations; the managerial and technical challenges facing nanotechnology based companies; the critical success factors in commercializing nanotechnologies; and the factors limiting the adoption and diffusion of nanotechnologies. The results and analysis of the interviews demonstrate that commercialization strategies for large corporations differ from those for start-up companies...

Trust Management is a growing problem in large corporations today. In industries like financial services, firms need to comply with constantly changing regulations, security requirements and business policies. Information technology is often the backbone of the processes that are regulated by such policies. Traditionally fine-grained Trust Management has been attempted by embedding policies within business logic of silo software applications. This practice leads to high total costs of ownership, minimal interoperability, potential security vulnerabilities and low management visibility into policy specifications and enforcement, which complicates compliance challenges with regulations like Sarbanes Oxley. This thesis makes several new contributions. First, it evaluates trust-policy related applications in the overall financial services industry that can benefit from rule technologies. A second contribution is proposing SCLP RuleML, an emerging semantic web rule language, for representing trust policies (SCLP = The Situated Courteous Logic Programs knowledge representation). A third contribution is providing several financial application scenarios in SCLP that demonstrate the effectiveness of RuleML, including credit card authorizations for electronic transactions...

Banking channel management has become a crucial component in the drive for improved efficiency. Since the channel is the interlocutor between customers and products, banks are leveraging their knowledge of channels to efficiently address perfect product portfolio through the most cost-effective and profitable channel. This thesis describes some ideas currently influencing banking channel management strategy and how banks can manage and take advantage of these factors through focusing on efficiency, customer segmentation and channel interaction versus cost structure. It first provides a global perspective of the banking industry through a survey of four regions and countries, and then reviews current trends and strategies applied by banks and consulting firms. On this foundation, it makes recommendations as to how the industry can best adapt to changes in banking channel management in order to remain competitive and efficient.; by Renato Teixeira Catalan.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 112-115).

In recent years we have seen a confluence of science and technology that portends great impact to business strategy and product development. Just as physicists, chemists and biologists have extended their knowledge to other fields in pursuit of their own research, so, too, must senior business managers extend beyond competency in finance and marketing to comprehend fundamental scientific principles in order to make strategic business decisions. In addition to technical knowledge specific to their particular industry, successful leaders of the very near future will have to understand the ebb and flow of new technology discoveries "emerging" from the lab to the market, and will skillfully leverage these dynamics to navigate their companies through waves of innovation. The speed of scientific discovery and the convergence of multiple technologies to influence a single product create a compelling argument for corporate investigation of a range of emerging technologies and tracking of developments in multiple industries. "Technical intelligence" is knowledge, derived from analysis of appropriate metrics, trends and activities, which informs strategic planning and decision-making. This research surveys the academic literature and examines some methods and tools for gathering and employing technical intelligence. We conclude that an amalgamation of strategic evaluation methods...

We would like to propose two critical dimensions for strategy: "Industry Scope Shift" and "Reverse Strategy Trace." Recent changes in the progress of information technology and economic globalization raised the importance of these dimensions. Rapid progress in information technology requires firms to respond to the changes of scope including market and product. The execution speed is increasingly becoming critical to keep uniqueness of product and service offerings. Industry Scope Shift helps the capturing of these changes into strategy. Economic globalization demands the organizational challenge to manage conflicts between local market responsiveness and global operation efficiency. Reverse Strategy Trace gives a clear perspective to analyze emergent strategy to accumulate organizational learning from business operations. We will examine the importance of these two dimensions and provides answers when and why these are critical in the strategy planning process.; by Yasuhiko Kiuchi.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 80-83).

High-performance teams can be used to achieve strategic high pay-offs for an organization. The aim of this paper is to study fundamentals key to the success of high performance teams and to examine the application of these fundamentals in an inherently multicultural international organization, such as the United Nations. The approach is to first review and to discuss relevant articles of work on high performance teams. As far as is possible, the most updated papers and books with a strong focus on both theory-driven approach and research, and which make good use of case studies with ample examples and illustrations are used. The output is the derivation of perspectives and frameworks which will then be used as guides to understanding the case for the United Nations. Following an overview of the United Nations history and current operations, a series of interviews with its key individuals is then conducted, with the aim to learning and making credible hypotheses and meaningful analysis. Towards this end, a good representation across the UN agencies is sought to ensure the necessary depth and breadth. The paper then considers what lies in the way ahead and finally concludes with recommendations for the United Nations and relevant key lessons learnt for the Civil Service of Singapore.; by Tan Wee Beng.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

The promise of personalized medicine lies in its potential to fundamentally change healthcare. In the past, pharmaceuticals were prescribed on a "one size fits all" basis-patients with certain disease phenotypes were given what were thought to be appropriate drugs. There is growing evidence however that the effectiveness of these drugs may differ by individual and by sub-group; presumably due to fundamental genetic differences in disease and metabolic pathways. Drugs like Herceptin, Gleevec and Iressa are part of an emerging trend in the biopharmaceutical arena of drugs that are accompanied by genetic diagnostic tests and prescribed only for patients with genotypes in which the agents are most effective.; by Chad D. This thesis studies the intellectual property strategy of companies in the flash memory industry, with special emphasis on technology and the development of nitride-based flash, a new and emerging type of memory technology. First, general perspectives and frameworks for licensing of patents and know-how are explored. Then, the participants in the flash memory industry are mapped to a product value chain, which is in turn mapped to an intellectual property value chain. We use a patent database analysis software IPVision in order to examine the patent portfolios of some of the memory chip companies. Analysis of the patent positions allows us to draw conclusions about the direction of technology development.; by Tomoko H. The healthcare industry is expanding swiftly and total healthcare expenditures are expected to reach 18% of GDP by 2008. However there exist steep variances in quality of care and high incidences of medical error. This has given impetus to efforts at progressively evolving the healthcare delivery system. The role of information technology (IT) is seen as being central to cost reduction and quality improvement of healthcare delivery. Furthermore, efficiency gains will realize approximately 20% in cost reductions. However, there are significant challenges associated with widespread adoption of IT by healthcare providers. Despite the existence of vendor and technology maturity, implementation rates for clinical patient record systems were only 35% in 2006. This study addresses the problem of low IT adoption in hospitals through a three pronged analysis methodology. A Clockspeed analysis has revealed a dichotomy between the maturity levels of technology and vendors on the one hand and delivery processes on the other. This has resulted in lower business value being realized from IT investments by healthcare providers.; (cont.) To address the concern of low business value realization from IT investments, a workflow and Social Networking Analysis was conducted on the surgery patient flow process of a prominent Boston area hospital. It was demonstrated that productivity gains could be achieved through redesign of social networks at the workplace and by inculcating an enterprise-wide process orientation. This would generate greater business value from existing IT investments and thereby impact the rate of IT adoption. Furthermore...

Disruptive innovations in network systems are forcing mobile carriers to manage difficult network software development. Within the limited development time, mobile carriers are required to develop large scale, high quality and robust network software, and accomplish smooth transition/upgrading. In the drastic transition of the network architecture, network carriers often fail to develop platform network software. Compared with KDDI, NTT DoCoMo (DoCoMo) has been coping with network migration problems. The critical difference in both mobile carriers is whether the platform-based approach was applied sufficiently in the network software development. DoCoMo's insufficient platform-based approach led to migration difficulties. On the other hand, the consistent platform-based approach allowed KDDI to enjoy successful migration. In order to identify the critical factors in network software development related to this problem, this thesis (1) explores the characteristics of network innovations and (2) analyzes the platform innovations in mobile network software. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to (3) suggest how incumbent mobile carriers can avoid the potential threats and develop the platform network software in future disruptive network innovations. In the future...

"When you write a book, you need to have more than an interesting story. You need to have a desire to tell the story. You need to be personally invested in some way. You need to care about it." Malcolm Gladwell Author, "The Tipping Point". "I have never thought of writing for reputation and honor. What I have in my heart must come out, that is the reason why I compose. " Ludwig van Beethoven. The above quotes answer the basic question that many people have asked me (and I have asked myself): Why are you writing a thesis? The answer is simple: I believe there's a story to be told, and I have a personal passion for the subject. This thesis will analyze the patterns and practices of contemporary software startups. Though much has been written about software companies and much has been written on startups, I'm primarily interested in the intersection: software startups. More specifically, I will explore contemporary software startups that were started after the Internet bubble burst. About The Website: onstartups.com; As part of the thesis writing experience, I started a blog called "OnStartups" (http://onstartups.com) where I have been posting articles on software startups. More information on the onstartups.com site is included at the end of the thesis. My passion for learning more about software startups...

In many high technology industries, incumbents routinely find themselves loosing to new entrants as well as established competitors in the battle for leadership across successive generations of new technology. However, the demise of the incumbent is most typically associated with the entry of start-up firms particularly in settings with minimal complementary assets, few intellectual property rights and limited technical expertise. This thesis will explore a different competitive setting - the U.S. Government's unclassified satellite competitions - an arena characterized by deep technical skills, strong and lasting complementary assets and robust IP. Given these strengths, we would expect to find that incumbents would successfully win most competitions. In fact, according to newly gathered data, satellite producers for the U.S. Government have historically experienced an almost 90% loss rate in follow-on satellites competitions. This pattern is prevalent in satellite competitions undertaken by the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Air Force (USAF) and the United Stated Navy (USN).; (cont.) The winners of these competitions are not to new entrants into the satellite business...

Consumers are constantly demanding better products, at lower prices, along with better overall services and customer support. Organizations, on the other hand, are struggling with shorter product life cycles, increased product variety and lower profit margins due to fierce global competition and faster commoditization of products and services. In a new, global world, targeting local markets does not seem to be enough for long-term company survival. Good supply chain management and design is becoming a key factor for resource optimization, overall user experience enhancement and to achieve a competitive strategic advantage in order to gain sustainable growth ratios. This thesis analyses how current trends in Supply Chain Management are affecting the global wine supply chain, and builds on the specific case of Argentinean wineries that sell their products in the U.S. market. I start by analyzing each tier of the supply chain using Porter's Five Forces model in order to understand the characteristics of each tier, how these forces impact the supply chain as a whole, and how companies interact between tiers. While doing so, I also analyze how current trends in Supply Chain Management are affecting the current state of the supply chain. Finally...

Innovations can be the single source of industry's growth. How innovations themselves grow or decline also has a direct affect on the health of the industry in which they play. This thesis looks at fiber optic technologies and their impact on the communications industry. The relative importance of the fiber optic technology is evidenced by its speed and effectiveness in shaping the communications infrastructure in a short period of the recent years. Advent of this relatively new technology, coupled with deregulation policies and the changes in the nature of the network traffic, has caused several disruptions to the communications value chain. Effects of these disruptions and their eventualities are the focus of this thesis. To study these effects, this thesis looks in detail at the interplay of various life cycle stages of innovations and industry. The innovation stages are classified as: Fluid, Transitional, and Specific. Each of these three stages affects the dynamics value chain of the industry in different ways. The characteristics of each stage are studied in detail. There are few innovations that can bring about an impact as extensive as the advent of fiber optics communications has. The review of the processes in the evolution of innovation from birth to potential re- birth provides great insights on the industry's life cycle. The study is based on current theories on the subject of management of technology applied to the communications sector. Most examples and data are based on the telecommunication networks in North America; the timeline of the study is the decade from mid 1990's to present. In closing various strategies in treading the evolution of innovation are described. The evolution life cycle; (cont.) model can be used in several other industries for managing innovation and technologies. Several related research topics are described...

A major element of mobile multimedia, telematics is the convergence of telecommunication and information technology which provides various services to and from the vehicle or mobile communication devices. Telematics is also a new technology which accelerates the rate of technological evolution in the automotive electronics industry. Similar to the United States and Europe, Japan is one of the nations which have advanced automotive technologies. Japanese telematics, however, doesn't have a long history. On the other hand, Japan has unique business circumstances such as highly developed mobile communication technology and contents business. The purpose of this study is to unlock the industrial structure and dynamics of the telematics industry in Japan. In addition, providing indications for building business strategies for telematics players such as automakers, auto suppliers and other industries is another objective. According to the "clockspeed" analysis, telematics clockspeed is much faster than that of automobiles. This situation creates a boundary called clockspeed collision between these two industries. Clockspeed collision will increase market pressure on automakers to provide updated electronic features and to reduce exposure of obsolescence. Clockspeed collision will also significantly affect the business strategies that each player involved in the telematics industry must consider. Value chain analysis illustrates that the telematics industry has a horizontally disintegrated structure. Also the fact that automakers have advantages in the industry is presented. In such situation...
