Steel and concrete composite structures are becoming a more and more common solution for buildings, since its structural efficiency and fast erection methods make its use economically competitive. A parametric study dealing with steel and concrete composite structures for typical office buildings braced horizontally and with regularly spaced columns is presented. The varying parameters are the type of column layout, the spans and the structural steel class. The general modeling principles of these building structures are briefly described, and for each structure within the parametric study the structural layout and geometry, the design criteria meeting ultimate and serviceability limit states, and the most representative internal forces are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the steel weight of the main and secondary girders, of the columns, and of the whole structure is analyzed and presented in the form of illustrative graphics, relating the amount of steel to the span and to the structural steel class.

The utility of wireless networks for many applications is increased if the locations of the nodes in the network can be tracked based on the measurements between communicating nodes. Many applications, such as tracking fire fighters in large buildings, require the deployment of mobile ad hoc networks. Real-time tracking in such environments is a challenging task, particularly combined with restrictions on computational and communication resources in mobile devices. In this paper we present a new algorithm using the Bayesian framework for cooperative tracking of nodes, which allows accurate tracking over large areas using only a small number of anchor nodes. The proposed algorithm requires lower computational and communication resources than existing algorithms. Simulation results show that the algorithm performs well with the tracking error being close to the posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound that we derive for cooperative tracking. Experimental results for a network deployed in an indoor office environment with external GPS referenced anchor nodes are presented. A computationally simple indoor range error model for measurements at the 5.8 GHz ISM band that yields positioning accuracy close to that obtained when using the actual range error distribution is also presented.; Thuraiappah Sathyan...

In this paper, we present tree based representations as enabler for fast information mining from Very High Resolution optical images. Nowadays, VHR images are acquired at resolution where man-made structures are visible. These structures are best associated to the homogeneous image components which are generally captured by a segmentation. The segmentation decreases the number of elements to be managed with respect to the number of pixels. In this paper, the image is mapped onto hierarchical segmentations which have the property of not being constrained by the typical scale of a single segmentation. The image components embedded in the hierarchical segmentations are further characterized by shape and spectral features. The hierarchical nature of the segmentations allows for fast characterization and restitution of the image components. Then, machine learning techniques can be employed for managing the features for performing analysis of the image information content. The paper describes a new machine learning technique which exploits the pre-organization of the features into hierarchical clusterings represented as a tree structure. This machine learning technique is proven to handle millions of elements. Experiments are conducted with satellite images to assess the combination of hierarchical segmentations with the tree based learning method. A first experiment is conducted on an hyper spectral image. Then...

Rapid urbanisation continues to be an issue with one third of the world’s urban population living under poor living conditions in informal settlements or shanty towns. Improving the lives of this population, which is one objective of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals, requires knowledge about the areas under concern. This information is currently still collected in intensive field studies. Earth observation data could be an alternative source of information that can support the process of information collection and on longer terms also serves for monitoring the evolution of those areas. Today’s sub-meter resolution satellites provide very detailed information allowing identification of different urban pattern. However, the huge amount of data requires an automatic information extraction to derive relevant information in a fast and consistent way. Reference data is crucial for the assessment of those algorithms but in case of absence of a relevant data set, which is especially the case in developing countries, an alternative database needs to be defined. In this paper we present a robust approach to produce a reference data set with limited field surveys for the city of Harare (Zimbabwe). This data set is defined to serve two objectives: first...
