This paper presents a study of the impact of Integrated Management Systems (IMS) in the areas of Quality, Environment and Health and Safety (QES) in the workplace in small and medium Portuguese companies (SMEs). In this study it is used as reference the standard ISO 9001 in relation to the quality management system, ISO 14001 in relation to the environment management system and OHSAS 18001 for the occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). The method used to evaluate the implemented systems was a form of questionnaire to the companies, considering the fact that they had to have at least the quality management system certification and had to be a small or medium enterprise. It is discussed the reasons for the companies to subscribe certifications, the advantages attainable results and questions about the three systems. Finally is presented a summary table of the main benefits of QMS (Quality Management Systems) in the SMEs with 2 and 3 Certifications. It is discussed the possibility of having only one standard that will involve the three systems: Quality, Environment and Safety, as well, the advantages and disadvantages that a unique standard would give

Purpose – Despite all the studies carried out in order to analyze the impact of quality management systems implementation and certification over companies’ financial performance, conclusions reached so far have been of a contradictory nature. Some authors conclude that there is a positive relationship between ISO 9001 certification and companies’ financial improvement, while others do not find evidence to support such a relationship. Overall, no consistent evidence could therefore be found in the literature concerning the ISO 9001 impact over companies’ business financial performance. This work aims to provide a contribution in this area. Design/methodology/approach – Using a public database of Portuguese companies’ financial information, this paper describes the results obtained from studying the economic impact of quality management systems, based on a statistical analysis. Findings – The results suggest that companies with higher financial performance do present a greater propensity to implement and certify their quality management systems. The ISO 9000 implementation motivation is a critical success factor in the impact of the quality management system over the company economic performance and, for some financial indicators...

Concepts like interfaces, synergies, fuzzy logic, organisational synapses and networking rule our days. These concepts orbit around the term “interactions”. Literally, interactions are everything. For instance, graphite and diamond are just carbon atoms “interacting” differently. Currently, customers demand a broader vision from organizations. In order to fulfil this demand organizations implemented and certified their management systems focusing different stakeholders’ requirements and according to several organisational standards, being the most reported ones ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Despite of the difficulties to achieve a consensual definition, if we consider concepts like quality tools, “Quality” is mainly an “action” concept. Thus, the main challenge faced by quality management systems (QMS) in an integrated environment would be philosophical: to leave the spotlights of an “action” based approach and to embrace the subtleness of the “interaction” approach. It is common sense that the system defining, promoting and stimulating interactions should not be involved in the action itself. Implications of this new role to play by quality management system are huge. Traditional organisational structures place quality transversally to production processes. It is expected that quality management system adopts a more vertical organisational orientation in order to accomplish new objectives posed by management systems integration. Human behaviour towards item production or service performance should change according new organisational placement by QMS. Each worker despite their organisational function should have a priori and a posteriori quality requirements knowledge...

Technological advancement has influenced all aspects of daily life. Since the adoption of Information Technology (IT) / Information Systems (IS), that represents the key issue for the success of most organizations, management of the quality of its products, services and business processes with established quality certification under ISO 9000, also represents a critical aspect in organizations. Organizations are forced to use advanced technologies and become more efficient in internal organization in order to be more competitive and closer to their customers and partners. In the face of increasingly demanding markets, interventions for organizational improvement through the adoption of quality management are becoming very common. The organizations are concerned with the development and implementation of information systems tailored to their specific needs, rather than buying in the market software applications. By the other hand, organizations acquire software certificates on the market to meet some specific requirements of the Quality Management Systems (QMS), such as auditing and document management. Synergies between the IS and QMS according to ISO 9001 standard, allows the association between these two systems, so that the IS can support and influence the processes related to the QMS...

Purpose – In the past few years, management systems implementation and certification has become a common practice among different types of organizations. In this context, quality management systems certification, according to the ISO 9001 standard is in the spotlight, due to over than 1.000.000 certified organizations by the end of 2009. Quality management systems can be integrated with an increasing variety of other subsystems implemented according to other standards, including environmental systems, health and safety, social responsibility, R&D, risk, or human resources, and subsystems raised from specific standards designed for specific activity sectors (HACCP, automotive or aeronautics, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and software). Due to this evolution, careful attention should be taken on how these different subsystems have been and should be articulated, harmonized and integrated. Thus, this paper intends to approach different strategies to achieve integration, with several levels of intensity, depth and authenticity between the different subsystems, and report some final recommendations related with good practices assuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the integration process. Design/methodology/approach – A case study methodology has supported this research. Three case studies were conducted on Portuguese companies that have an integrated quality...

Purpose: Despite the associations of the quality movement with the certification of quality management systems (QMS), these by themselves are not sufficient to ensure the competitiveness of organizations, namely if the implementation and the certification is due to external motivations. Considering the growing scarcity of resources and increased competition, now on a global scale, organizations, and particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), need to be more efficient, measuring and improving their performance. Thus, the existence of a QMS directed to the continuous improvement of procedures and processes and customer satisfaction, and the existence of an accounting system that, in addition to ensuring compliance with legal requirements, have the ability to produce timely and relevant information to support the decision process, can make the difference between discontinuation and progress of SMEs. In this context, this study aims to study the positioning of Portuguese SMEs with relation to the QMS and to investigate their use of accounting as an information system for management. Methodology/Approach: Data were collected through a questionnaire sent to a thousand companies. Findings: The results show that although the respondents recognize the importance of quality management and the role of accounting in the management of their companies...

Higher Education Institutions (HEI) have special features that matter to consider in the implementation of its Quality Management Systems (QMS). These should convey clear and broadly accepted messages, so they need to find the best balance between academic freedom and responsibility for accountability. Given these characteristics, as well as the weakness of diagnostic tools, the culture of independence of teachers and insufficient authority and stability of the management bodies, the QMS of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS) was designed to be based on two fundamental pillars: profound knowledge of the variables with impact on results and evidence-based management. In other words, it was not based on procedures (as usual), but in information. In this sense, and assuming known statement that “we cannot manage what we do not know”, the basic component of the QMS is a monitoring system. We applied the recommendation of Snyder et al. (2000, p.320) "Stimulating the imbalance with information", urging people to act on the basis of clear information. The work undertaken till now (last five years) is described and discussed critically. This work includes, among other activities and projects, the design of a Global Model Process...

This thesis aims at analyzing from the perspective of the manager the importance of the use of quality management tools and concepts in Federal Universities. It was motivated by the following research problem: do Federal University managers consider it to be relevant the quality management in their institution? Therefore, we sought to gather evidence for a satisfactory approach that addresses the complexity of the topic researched: quality, higher education and quality management systems. We chose to adopt an applied study, the exploratory-descriptive research as to the objective and the quantitative and qualitative research as to the approach to the problem. The object of study is composed by the Planning Provosts of Federal Universities listed in the University Ranking Sheet - (RUF) in 2013. We chose to restrict the sample listing only the provosts of the 20 best-placed universities in the ranking of the Federal Universities. The research instrument was composed of 26 questions, of which 6 questions were designed to identify the profile of the manager, 16 questions of perception (manifested variables) on the importance of quality management in the University, where the managers assigned values (answers) to the affirmatives (that address the main topic of this thesis) based on a Likert scale of 5 points...

This paperanalyses the quality management system of two Cantabrian companies from the telecommunications sector. Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; This thesis examines the similarities and differences between the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) and International Standards Organization (ISO) 9000 quality management systems (QMS), and what changes must be done to bring the NAMP to ISO 9000 standards. The NAMP is naval aviation's overall guiding document that outlines command, administrative, and management relationships, and assigns maintenance policy and procedure responsibilities to the respective individuals for management. ISO 9000 is a series of international standards establishing requirements and guidelines for maintaining an organization's quality system, which focuses on prevention rather than detection This thesis will first examine ISO 9000 QMS aspects in relation to intermediate maintenance actions. Next, a plan for implementing the ISO 9000 QMS in naval aviation's organizational and intermediate maintenance activities is developed. Specifically, process maps are described for QM documentation, policies, and procedures under both the NAMP and ISO 9000, and then compared and contrasted. Then, a sample ISO 9000 quality manual for the Tool Control Program (TCP) on an intermediate maintenance activity, including how this manual can satisfy the 20 tenets of the ISO 9000 QMS is developed. Finally...

As assisted reproductive technology (ART) expanded globally, several countries introduced prescribed requirements for treatment and monitoring of outcomes, as well as a licensing or accreditation requirement. While it is common for ART laboratories to be required to have an effective quality control system, the remainder of the clinic is often under less stringent regulation. Furthermore, when treatment conditions are prescribed, the standards tend to be conservative and clinics may choose to establish their own standards. Total quality management systems are now being used by an increasing number of ART clinics. In Australia and New Zealand, it is now a requirement to have a quality management system in order to be accredited and to help meet customer demand for improved delivery of ART services in these two countries.; http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/623004/description#description; G.M. The literature focusing on quality costs has placed great importance on issues related to identifying, measuring and reporting quality cost information. Less attention has been paid to how this information is used in the management process and how it can enhance internal capabilities and thereby improve company performance. In addition to addressing this question, we analyse how the extensive use of quality costs can boost organisational learning and innovation in organisations' internal processes, thus leading to an overall improvement in the quality management system that is reflected in financial and non-financial performance. The conceptual model developed involves these relationships and has been tested using the structural equation modelling technique. To this end, a questionnaire survey was conducted in Portuguese companies with the ISO 9000 certification. The results shed light on the causal links between the variables, and thus validate the conceptual model indicating that the use of quality cost information has a positive effect on both the development of quality management systems and performance

Presently, we are well aware that poor quality data is costing large amounts of money to corporations all over the world. Nevertheless, little research has been done about the way Organizations are dealing with data quality management and the strategies they are using. This work aims to find some answers to the following questions: which business drivers motivate the organizations to engage in a data quality management initiative?, how do they implement data quality management? and which objectives have been achieved, so far? Due to the kind of research questions involved, a decision was made to adopt the use of multiple exploratory case studies as research strategy [32]. The case studies were developed in a telecommunications company (MyTelecom), a public bank (PublicBank) and in the central bank (CentralBank) of one European Union Country. The results show that the main drivers to data quality (DQ) initiatives were the reduction in non quality costs, risk management, mergers, and the improvement of the company's image among its customers, those aspects being in line with literature [7, 8, 20]. The commercial corporations (MyTelecom and PublicBank) began their DQ projects with customer data, this being in accordance with literature [18]...
