xii, 463 p. : ill., music ; 28 cm.; Scholars in the social sciences have devoted considerable research to the relationship between the United States and Mexico, underscoring its crucial importance to the economic, political, social and cultural development of both countries. However, academics in the humanities and arts are just beginning to write the history of binational cultural relations. This study examines the musical nationalisms of both countries in the context of the binational relationship. A comparative analysis of Mexican and American musical nationalisms shows significant, yet largely unexplored, connections and parallels, elucidating the mechanisms through which foreign policy, culture, and music interact to create and mediate national and transnational identities.
The definition of a national identity and the development of cultural and political nationalism dominated much of the musical discourse of early twentieth century American and Mexican art music, as well as of popular music in the late part of the century. Intertwined with the discourse of musical nationalism in both countries are aesthetic and cultural issues emerging from two dichotomies that came to dominate the music of the twentieth century: the split between modernism and the Classical tradition...

This thesis focuses on the change of the concept of asylum through the incorporation of the gender concept and its impact on the application process of asylum and the granting of status refugee for victims of gender violence in Canada. This report compares the history of Environmental Assessment (EA) and Social Assessment (SA) in the World Bank, in order to draw "lessons learned" to improve development. The main need-to shift attention from the EA report to implementation on the ground-has been started recently (Goodland and Mercier 1999), so this paper focuses on process. The history of social and economic assessments shows how scarce social and natural capital is being converted to abundant economic capital. The EA and SA processes are examined to see the extent to which they could promote sustainability, the maintenance of capital. This means social and economic assessments can be used to prevent inadvertent consumption of natural and social capital. Following a historical section, there is a brief but more theoretical section on the substitutability between the four main forms of capital and their relevance to achieving the goal of sustainability by means of improved social and economic assessments.

The Horn of Africa (HOA) covers Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. Despite its rich endowment in human, social, and natural capital, the region is plagued by a complex history of weak governance, insecurity, increasing environmental degradation, entrenched poverty, and a range of persistent development challenges. Conflict remains endemic in the region. The complex cultural, social, and political nature of these conflicts is compounded by demographic shifts due both to population growth and the movement of people, as well as imbalanced service provision, inaccessibility, the growing threat of pandemic diseases, increasing conflicts over scarce natural resources, and harsh climatic conditions including frequent droughts and floods. There are four major protracted displacement situations in the HOA, each with its own characteristics but also with similarities: (1) Eritrea, with significant mixed migration; (2) Somalia, with conflict and violence in areas of origin and food insecurity and destruction of shelter due to floods and droughts; (3) South Sudan...

Expertise in physics has been traditionally studied in cognitive science, where physics expertise is understood through the difference between novice and expert problem solving skills. The cognitive perspective of physics experts only create a partial model of physics expertise and does not take into account the development of physics experts in the natural context of research. This dissertation takes a social and cultural perspective of learning through apprenticeship to model the development of physics expertise of physics graduate students in a research group. I use a qualitative methodological approach of an ethnographic case study to observe and video record the common practices of graduate students in their biophysics weekly research group meetings. I recorded notes on observations and conduct interviews with all participants of the biophysics research group for a period of eight months. I apply the theoretical framework of Communities of Practice to distinguish the cultural norms of the group that cultivate physics expert practices. Results indicate that physics expertise is specific to a topic or subfield and it is established through effectively publishing research in the larger biophysics research community. The participant biophysics research group follows a learning trajectory for its students to contribute to research and learn to communicate their research in the larger biophysics community. In this learning trajectory students develop expert member competencies to learn to communicate their research and to learn the standards and trends of research in the larger research community. Findings from this dissertation expand the model of physics expertise beyond the cognitive realm and add the social and cultural nature of physics expertise development. This research also addresses ways to increase physics graduate student success towards their PhD. and decrease the 48% attrition rate of physics graduate students. Cultivating effective research experiences that give graduate students agency and autonomy beyond their research groups gives students the motivation to finish graduate school and establish their physics expertise.

In this paper, I analyze the processes that transformed aquaculture into a major export industry in India, in order to understand the role aquaculture has as a social and economic development strategy of the Indian state. The discussion employs a political ecology approach as I explore the complex relations between access and control of India’s coastal resources, society, and economy. I argue that many of the forces that initiated the development of aquaculture in India, namely the involvement of the Indian state, continue to shape the industry today. I also discuss how despite widespread social conflict, the shrimp farming industry, in particular, continues to thrive and grow in rural India. My analysis utilizes ethnographic and archival data collected over the course of 9 months of fieldwork in Tamil Nadu, India. Keywords: rural development, aquaculture, India, State, ethnography

The international art market is a mature market and as such provides an interesting venue for the exploration of the roles played by business and social relationships in shaping this market. Following Hallen (1992) and Maniela (2007), this paper explores the operation of managers in the visual arts in terms of the network of relationships within which they offer. Drawing on Bourdieu (1998), the importance of social and cultural capital in governing these relationships and relational levels is explored. Six life history interviews were conducted with artist managers in Melbourne, Australia which focused on the relational networks to which they belonged. The findings led to the development of a initial four level typology of interpersonal relationship development in the international art market. Overall, movement between the four levels and adding on or removing a level is carefully focused around favours, exchange of tacit knowledge and loyalty and such movement is often dependent on the symbolic capital of the individuals involved in this exchange. The research showed that relationships are not static and are geographically specific, in line with Hallen’s (1992) work and that the need to acquire, or the possession of, social and cultural capital plays an influencing role in moving relationships from one level to another.; Finola Kerrigan and Susan Freeman

This dissertation has two main themes. First, it studies the role of social and cultural capital in educational achievement from a comparative perspective. Second, it investigates determinants of social trust among adolescents, where the theoretical framework combines insights from both political socialization literature and social capital literature. The core of the thesis is three empirical papers. The first paper is novel in that it explores the relevance of social and cultural capital when measuring improvement in children’s educational achievement in two vastly different societies: Eastern and Western Europe shortly after communism. My explicit question is not if social and cultural capital contribute to educational outcomes, but whether this contribution is the same in different societies. In seeking the significance of the role of social and cultural capital, I used data from the Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) which surveyed 50,000 eighth-grade pupils across Europe. Educational performance is measured by pupils test scores in mathematics. The second and third papers elaborate what is the second theme of this thesis: The origins of social trust among adolescents. In order to shed more light on this issue...

The situation of women in the world is generally worse than the situation of men, however, many violations of rights of women are not considered, at the international level, as human rights violations. This situation is aggravated especially when it comes to economic, social and cultural rights of women. Overall, development policies have taken a paternalistic approach and they disregard the needs of women. In doing so, interventions to alleviate poverty don’t have contributed to a more effectiveness of human rights of women.

Estuaries are the 'door mat' of human activity on land. They are also highly valued by the community. The New South Wales (NSW) oyster industry is Australia's oldest farming enterprise, dating back to the pre-European settlement era and as a consequence has social and cultural significance. Oyster farmers have developed generations of understanding and professional and intimate observation of the subtleties and frailties of NSW estuaries, cultivating their shells on a daily basis. The key motivation for this study is that the NSW oyster industry is a risk indicator of sustainable coastal catchment policy and practice. The studies are based on the overarching hypothesis that the economic, social, cultural, human health and environmental sustainability objectives of the NSW oyster industry require a historically- and scientifically-based risk analysis framework for selecting, managing and cultivating oyster farming areas. A review identified that it was vulnerable because of the lack of protection and planning for oyster growing areas. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that policies based on a risk analysis framework optimise outcomes for strategic management of the NSW oyster industry where risk is defined in terms of the effect of uncertainties on the industry's economic...

Elevated arterial blood pressure varies substantially in relation to social and cultural variables. Early work on acculturation, socioeconomic status, and blood pressure documented this variation, which could not be explained entirely by conventional factors such as diet, physical activity, or access to medical care. These findings stimulated the development of a model of stress and disease. The stress model emphasizes social and psychological factors that are perceived by individuals to be stressful, as well as factors that help individuals to respond to those stressors. Conventional stress models are, however, problematic because the primary emphasis is on individual perception, with little consideration of the social and cultural context in which stress occurs. This paper describes a complementary model of social and cultural influences on disease risk, placing greater emphasis on how individuals are able to approximate, in their own behaviors, shared cultural models of life, referred to as "cultural consonance". Findings from research in Brazil indicate that the higher an individual's cultural consonance, the lower his or her blood pressure. These results indicate the importance of linking different levels of analysis - the cultural...

Any vision of knowledge societies must affirm the core aspirations for peaceful and sustainable knowledge societies in a way that acknowledges the interests of all stakeholders. It is essential to recall that knowledge societies are concerned with human development, not only with technological innovation and its impacts. In this report, we focus on the importance of freedom of expression and freedom of information, universal access to information and knowledge, quality education for all, and respect for linguistic and cultural diversity. We underline the key role of learning and training processes, grassroots initiatives and stakeholders’ participation, and policies to achieve a fair balance between public and private interests.

Various approaches to the adjudication of economic, social and cultural rights have developed out of jurisprudential and doctrinal debates around the justiciability of these rights. This article advocates for the application of both direct and indirect approaches to the justiciability of economic, social and cultural rights in the African human rights system. Under the direct approach, it argues for a model that combines the analysis of relevant provisions to identify normative standards and the evaluation of the conduct of states based on those standards. Under the indirect approach, it makes a case for the interdependent interpretation of substantive rights falling in different commonly-used categories to bridge gaps in the protection of specific economic, social and cultural rights and to ensure the coherent application of human rights norms. There is evidence in the jurisprudence of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights that it applies both approaches. Its reasoning in many of the relevant decisions has, however, been lacking in the level of rigour, soberness, detail and consistency that is needed for a principled disposition of cases. The further development of its jurisprudence based on the evaluation of competing approaches to the justiciability of economic...
