The kind of temperance discussed is the virtue of moderation concerning the pleasures of eating and drinking. A person lacks this moderation if either his desire for such pleasures causes conflicts with his own standards of appropriate behaviour or the standards themselves attach too much importance to the pleasures concerned. Opinions vary about the proper status of these pleasures, but people surely value them too highly if they place them above their health or the moral duty not to cause unnecessary suffering. Temperance concerns medicine because of its connection with health, ethics because it involves not only the good life for the individual but also the welfare of other creatures.

The temperance is a virtue that orders the pleasures of tact, and regulates the chastity. Finally, we show that is possible in thomistic thought admit the legitimacy of sexual pleasure and also the natural necessity in relations, and this relations just can be designed inside of legitimate marriage; Esta dissertação tem como propósito apresentar uma visão elementar do pensamento tomista acerca da sexualidade humana a partir das noções de vício e de virtude.

The three temperance cycles and their etiology are examined. Related articles on origins of drinking patterns and attitudes in western Europe from antiquity and the influence of the Roman Empire, its continued influence on modern society including American Prohibition and temperance cycles, alcohol control policies, attitudes and beverage preferences due to religion, climate, and European homeland can be found at the following IUScholarWorks links: http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17452; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17143; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17139; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17148; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17149; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17485; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17484; Western Europeans brought their drinking patterns, formed in antiquity, to the new world. Because of vast cultural differences in these drinking norms, in combination with political and social forces, anti-alcohol and prohibition movements have occurred in the United States. These have often been part of social reform cycles, sometimes called "clean living movements," where concerns about tobacco, diet, pure water, exercise and social conditions have also been common. The current movement started in the late 1970s. It has resulted in modifications of public policy and education concerning alcohol. Some of the changes since the beginning of this reform cycle have included the raising of the legal purchase age for alcoholic beverages...

It is proposed the American temperance cycles are the result of cultural clashes concerning alcohol use. Related articles on origins of drinking patterns and attitudes in western Europe from antiquity and the influence of the Roman Empire, its continued influence on modern society including American Prohibition cycles, alcohol control policies, attitudes and beverage preferences due to religion, climate, and European homeland can be found at the following IUScholarWorks links: http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17452; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17139; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17145; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17148; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17149; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17485; http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17484; It has been proposed that different drinking norms developed in northern and southern Europe during antiquity and that these patterns are still found today in the cultures overlying these areas. In terms of western European civilization and its colonies, anti-alcohol movements have primarily emerged in the Protestant Nordic and English language speaking culture. European immigrants to the New World brought with them their different drinking attitudes and practices to both North and South America. In North America—particularly in the United States—clashes between these divergent cultures and their drinking patterns have precipitated anti-alcohol...
