Microblogging in the workplace as a functionality of Enterprise Social Networking (ESN) platforms is a relatively new phenomenon of which the use in knowledge work has not yet received much attention from research. In this cross-sectional study, I attempt to shed light on the role of microblogging in knowledge work. I identify microblogging use practices of knowledge workers on ESN platforms, and I identify its role in supporting knowledge work performance. A questionnaire is carried out among a non-representative sample of knowledge workers. The results shed light on the purposes of the microblogging messages that knowledge workers write. It also helps us find out whether microblogging supports them in performing their work. The survey is based on existing theory that supplied me with possible microblog purposes as well as theory on what the actions of knowledge workers are. The results reveal that “knowledge & news sharing”, “crowd sourcing”, “socializing & networking” and “discussion & opinion” are frequent microblog purposes. The study furthermore shows that microblogging benefits knowledge workers’ work. Microblogging seems to be a worthy addition to the existing means of communication in the workplace, and is especially useful to let knowledge...

peer-reviewed; The introduction of social networking in language learning is becoming increasingly important, and as a result, teachers require new skills in their newfound roles as moderators of informal online learning. This paper presents details about a two-year EU Lifelong Learning funded project, namely JOYN 2.0, which aims to promote language learning through social networking http://www.joynlanguages.eu/. The JOYN 2.0 projects examines the process of moderating language learning through the use of social networking by effectively using on-line tools, collaborative learning and autonomous learning opportunities; by enhancing the role of media, particularly on-line media and social media, in language learning; by strengthening cooperation between social media/networks, commercial providers of online learning opportunities and language teaching professionals; and by using more fully the potential of (a) on-line learning resources (b) collaborative learning in social networks; (c) tools such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) and the European Language Portfolio (ELP). There are six partners involved in this project stemming from Ireland, UK, Lithuania, Latvia and Greece. Our task in the UK was to train language teachers for the role as moderators in an informal online learning environment. This was achieved by means of a two-day training event. The next step was for the partner institutions to set up social networks in their respective languages for online learning. To this end...

This ethnographic research among rural South African men and women seeking care for STDs explores constraints to communication among partners and defines predominant patterns of sexual networking. A series of fifteen open-ended interviews explored topics related to sexual networking and partner communication. Patterns of sexual networking showed clear gender variation, with men more likely to discuss multiple partners. Both men and women believed they should tell one partner about their STD, most often a steady partner. Strong distinctions were made between regular and casual partners, with an emphasis on the role of trust in a steady relationship. Men and women expressed anxiety about telling their partners of their illness, but women more often expressed fear whereas men felt embarrassed. Multi-partnered sexuality is common and is widely accepted for men. While the importance of regular partnerships is clear for both men and women, sexual relationships appear to be highly unstable. Communication among partners could be facilitated by stronger health promotion messages, such as the importance of telling a partner about an STD. Prevailing patterns of communication and sexual networking have profound implications for the STD epidemic.; no

This thesis investigates the evolving learning needs and expectations of modern day higher education students in Australia, and explores the efficacy of online social networking tools within design and digital media education. This research is concerned with tertiary students at both first and final year levels, and also focuses on the international student experience within Australia. The principle aims of the research are a) to determine the effectiveness of social networking sites for improving the first year learning experience by establishing connections, both academic and social, between students, specifically connections between local and international students; and b) to establish networking opportunities for final year design students with relevant professionals, including recent graduates and industry leaders. The core research is conducted through two case studies, focussing on the use of Facebook as an online learning environment for both first and final year education. The first year case study uses the course Imaging Our World as an academic platform, and is analysed from 2008 to 2011. The final year case study uses the Master of Design with Digital Media program as an academic platform, and is analysed from 2009 to 2011. From 2008 to 2011 first year students engaged with their peers through an online forum in Facebook...

This paper addresses the topic of Fair QoE measurements in networking. The research of new solutions in networking is oriented to improve the user experience. Any application or service can be im- proved and the deployment of new solutions is mandatory to get the user satisfaction. However, different solutions exist; thus, it is necessary to select the most suitable ones. Nevertheless, this selection is difficult to make since the QoE is subjective and the comparison among different technologies is not trivial. The aim of this paper is to give an overview on how to perform fair QoE measurements to facilitate the study and re- search of new networking solutions and paradigms. However, previously to address this problem, an overview about how networking affects to the QoE is provided.; This work has been funded by the CONTENT NoE from the European Commission (FP6- 2005-IST-41) and by the Ministry of Science and Innovation under the CON- PARTE project (MEC, TEC2007-67966-C03-03/TCM) and T2C2 project grant (TIN2008-06739-C04-01).; [Invited Talk] Eighth International Conference on Wired/Wireless Internet Communications (June 1-3, Luleå, Sweden); Proceeding of: 8th International Conference, WWIC 2010, Lulea, Sweden, June 1-3, 2010

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 2009; After the death of a loved one, social networking sites may provide several important functions in relation to feeling connected to the deceased as well as others during grief. Logistically, because social networking sites can be accessed at any time of the day from anywhere in the world, bereaved individuals are able to connect with their social network whenever the desire arises. This may be especially important to college students who may be hundreds of miles away from their family and friends or access to their deceased friend's gravesite. Feeling connected to others during grief may also provide a much needed sense of comfort and community for the bereaved, which may not be readily available away from home. The focus of the study was to examine the meanings participants in emerging adulthood attribute to a deceased loved one's social networking Webpage. Continuing bonds with the deceased were also explored. Biographic-Narrative-Inquiry-Methodology (BNIM) methodology, which is used for exploring the lived-experiences through biographic narrative interviews, was used to collect and analyze data for this research which included a systematic approach to interview methods...

The motivation to carry out the learning experience presented in this paper derived from three premises found in the review of literature that sustains the empirical sudy: i) social networking is a daily routine for most western world citizens; ii) (portuguese) non superior schools are equipped with computers and Internet access; iii) the integration of the technologies in the curriculum is related to the ICT training teachers have in their initial education programs. Taking these assumptions as a guide, social networking activities were integrated in an ICT program at a Portuguese university enrolling 26 preservice teachers from humanities (History, Geography and Philosophy). For one semester student teachers used PROEDI (www.proedi.ning.com) a social networking created to be an informal space for professional growth Portuguese speaking teachers. For data collection we used observation of the interactions (sociometric analysis) as well as two online questionnaires (initial and final) to evaluate students´ perceptions on educational networking. Results are presented and discussed.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

Estes resultados identificam competências a otimizar para o desenvolvimento organizacional.; Different studies claim that political skills, networking and entrepreneurial attitude orientation are positively related to customer orientation and organization growth. This research tried to understand the influence of managers with these skills in the context of 200 Portuguese and German start-ups. It was found, however, that there are negative relationship between the using of networking with customer orientation, as well as between the building of networking and the entrepreneurial attitude orientation with growth organizational. These results identify skills to optimize organizational development.

In this paper, we introduce a new networking architecture called Group Centric Networking (GCN), which is designed to support the large number of devices expected with the emergence of the Internet of Things. GCN is designed to enable these devices to operate collaboratively in a highly efficient and resilient fashion, while not sacrificing their ability to communicate with one another. We do a full protocol implementation of GCN in NS3, and demonstrate that GCN utilizes up to an order of magnitude fewer network resources than traditional wireless networking schemes, while providing high connectivity and reliability.

In this paper we introduce the Generalized Virtual Networking (GVN) concept. GVN provides a framework to influence the routing of packets based on service level information that is carried in the packets. It is based on a protocol header inserted between the Network and Transport layers, therefore it can be seen as a layer 3.5 solution. Technically, GVN is proposed as a new transport layer protocol in the TCP/IP protocol suite. An IP router that is not GVN capable will simply process the IP destination address as usual. Similar concepts have been proposed in other works, and referred to as Service Oriented Networking, Service Centric Networking, Application Delivery Networking, but they are now generalized in the proposed GVN framework. In this respect, the GVN header is a generic container that can be adapted to serve the needs of arbitrary service level routing solutions. The GVN header can be managed by GVN capable end-hosts and applications or can be pushed/popped at the edge of a GVN capable network (like a VLAN tag). In this position paper, we show that Generalized Virtual Networking is a powerful enabler for SCN (Service Centric Networking) and NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and how it couples with the SDN (Software Defined Networking) paradigm.

Content-centric networking -- also known as information-centric networking (ICN) -- shifts emphasis from hosts and interfaces (as in today's Internet) to data. Named data becomes addressable and routable, while locations that currently store that data become irrelevant to applications. Named Data Networking (NDN) is a large collaborative research effort that exemplifies the content-centric approach to networking. NDN has some innate privacy-friendly features, such as lack of source and destination addresses on packets. However, as discussed in this paper, NDN architecture prompts some privacy concerns mainly stemming from the semantic richness of names. We examine privacy-relevant characteristics of NDN and present an initial attempt to achieve communication privacy. Specifically, we design an NDN add-on tool, called ANDaNA, that borrows a number of features from Tor. As we demonstrate via experiments, it provides comparable anonymity with lower relative overhead.; Comment: NDSS 2012 - Proceedings of the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium, San Diego, California, USA

Information Centric Networking (ICN) has been proposed as a new networking paradigm in which the network provides users with content instead communication channels between hosts. The Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach promises to be a solution to enable the continuous evolution of networking architectures. In this paper we propose and discuss solutions to support ICN using SDN concepts. We focus on an ICN framework called CONET, which grounds its roots in the CCN/NDN architecture. We face the problem in two complementary ways. First we discuss a general and long term solution based on SDN concepts without taking into account specific limitations of SDN standards and equipment. Then we focus on an experiment to support ICN functionality over a large scale SDN testbed based on OpenFlow, developed in the context of the OFELIA European research project. The current OFELIA testbed is based on OpenFlow 1.0 equipment from a variety of vendors, therefore we had to design the experiment taking into account the features that are currently available on off-the-shelf OpenFlow equipment.; Comment: submitted on January 2013 to Computer Networks (Elsevier)

Reduction of unnecessary energy consumption is becoming a major concern in wired networking, because of the potential economical benefits and of its expected environmental impact. These issues, usually referred to as "green networking", relate to embedding energy-awareness in the design, in the devices and in the protocols of networks. In this work, we first formulate a more precise definition of the "green" attribute. We furthermore identify a few paradigms that are the key enablers of energy-aware networking research. We then overview the current state of the art and provide a taxonomy of the relevant work, with a special focus on wired networking. At a high level, we identify four branches of green networking research that stem from different observations on the root causes of energy waste, namely (i) Adaptive Link Rate, (ii) Interface proxying, (iii) Energy-aware infrastructures and (iv) Energy-aware applications. In this work, we do not only explore specific proposals pertaining to each of the above branches, but also offer a perspective for research.; Comment: Index Terms: Green Networking; Wired Networks; Adaptive Link Rate; Interface Proxying; Energy-aware Infrastructures; Energy-aware Applications. 18 pages, 6 figures...

The hypothesis of this thesis is that social networking website design can exert a mediating influence upon the culture of a site by supporting certain behaviors more than others; this influence can be analyzed in an active and structured way that takes into account the culture of the community it addresses. Evidence will be offered by case study, demonstration of specific mediations, and analysis. This hypothesis will be tested with specific reference to the gay male community. The scope of this paper will be limited to the analysis of gay-oriented social networking websites as new media, in general and through specific examples. I will present frameworks for categorizing and analyzing these websites that consider the mediating influences associated with site design. In the last chapter, I will propose community-enhancing design. The method of analysis first takes into account the nature of new media. It then discusses the concepts of cultural mediums and mediators in terms of site-wide typology and specific forms of mediation. It then identifies common elements of gay social networking sites and their associated usage as well as the design decisions that are related to them. Next user goals and site goals are correlated to these design decisions. Virtual personas and real communities are discusses as a concept. Using the proposed methodology...
