This paper provides an examination of the emergence of open business models — entrepreneurial strategies that take advantage of the ease of digital reproduction to distribute free content, while
earning money from the sale of related products and services. Locating the origins of open business in the open source software
phenomenon, the authors suggest that the business strategies
innovated there have broader economic relevance. Through a case study of the tecnobrega music scene in Belém, the paper illustrates
how open business models can be applied to the production of
cultural materials more generally

empresarial.
Numa primeira fase, foram realizadas quatro entrevistas semi-estruturadas a académicos
e responsáveis de instituições ligadas à ITVP...

#new technology-intensive firms#business models#emerging renewable energy technologies#socio-technical transitions
This paper focuses on the behaviour of new technology-intensive firms (NTIFs) in the process of developing research-based renewable energy technologies, and introducing them into the market.
Our main assumption is that the introduction of new energy technologies is closely connected with the creation of a variety of small technology-intensive firms that are the conveyors of these technologies and act as challengers to the statu quo.
We adopt a business model framework to study value creation by NTIFs, taking into account the context, where policy options, obstacles and opportunities impact the action and outcomes of the companies. The framework is applied to a group of 28 Portuguese NTIFs in several renewable energy areas.
Further work will explore the potential both of the conceptual and analytical frameworks introduced here, and the array of interesting data collected in the research.

We would like to thank Philipp Schwarz and Julia Gückel for their dedicated support in preparing this paper and our colleagues and students of the School of Engineering and the Business School for our fruitful discussions.; Four categories of innovations have been identified by Freeman and Perez: incremental innovations, radical innovations, new technological systems (systemic innovations), and technological revolutions or new techno-economic paradigms. New techno-economic paradigms represent changes in technological systems that are so far-reaching in their effects that they have a major influence on the behaviour of the entire economy. Scarcity of oil and external costs like global warming are the key arguments and the main drivers of the change of the current paradigm.
They will affect especially the mobility of individuals and the interlinked business models. Novel business models within newly created markets will raise e.g. extended mobility services, activities aiming at the infrastructure, new opportunities in the field of energy transmission and supply and even new strategies of recycling, reusing or reducing the use of resources in order to address global scarcity issues.
Especially for the established players of the automotive industry like original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or 1st and 2nd tier suppliers this implicates opportunities and risks at the same time. But also new players will get the chance to create and enter new markets with new or extended products or services and lead the new value chain.
This paper compiles and evaluates current approaches and business models of selected OEMs together with upcoming players. Additionally their positions within the existing value chain are being analyzed and classified. Bringing together the identified drivers of changes with current trends within the automotive industry the authors also show new concepts of extended business models...

This report evaluates the role,
operational models and identifies good practices of programs
that seek to accelerate innovative entrepreneurship by
managing, nurturing and leveraging social and business
networks. The report discusses the role of venture
acceleration networks, using networks to support
entrepreneurs, creating strong networks, selecting ventures,
financing the program, choosing an organizational structure,
adapting to the innovation ecosystem and the role for the
public sector in Russia. The second part of the report
describes individual programs. The conclusion suggests next
steps for operationalizing a venture acceleration network in
Russia. Venture acceleration network experiments highlight a
multitude of challenges. Some face challenges linked to the
environments where they operate. Where there is no local
pipeline of coachable ventures or of mentors with the right
mix of skills, experience and connections, programs do not
succeed. Programs also face an uphill challenge where there
is no local access to complementary forms of public and
private support.

E-procurement systems have become an
integral component of procurement reform by governments
around the world as they move to institute competitive and
fully transparent procurement systems, and to address issues
of corruption and transparency. This rise in demand for
e-Government Procurement (e-GP) systems has created an
innovative industry of technical products and business
arrangements. To support the development, implementation and
operation of e-procurement systems, governments have
undertaken several different business approaches, from
complete in house solutions to various types of third-party
partnerships. Each implementation has its own set of
benefits and business issues associated with it, which
directly affect both the government and the suppliers doing
business with the government. The purpose of the study is to
identify the types of business arrangements used by
governments; the benefits of these arrangements; how they
may or may not affect the procurement process; the types of
issues or perceived issues that have resulted from the
business approaches applied; the contractual arrangements or
policies that have been drafted to mitigate issues and
ensure the integrity and security of the procurement
process. The goal of this study is to continue expanding the
World Bank knowledge base on e-procurement programs...

The objective of the Customer Management
in Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Banking Guide is to
share and disseminate critical information for managing the
SME client relationship, allowing banks that already serve
the SME sector to move beyond lending to better capture the
SME Banking opportunity. This Guide leverages IFC s SME
Banking Diagnostic framework used to assess SME banking
operations, as well as its SME Banking Benchmarking exercise
used to analyze good practice business models. In addition,
the Guide provides practical examples of customer management
focused on SME banking from a number of featured financial
institutions. Such examples may serve to highlight a good
practice, or may simply serve to illustrate a learning
experience. Financial institutions featured in this
publication include Bankinter, DBS Bank, Diamond Bank,
Garanti Bank, ICICI Bank, Banco Santander, and Türk Ekonomi
Bankasi (TEB). Additional SME banking experiences are drawn
from a variety of other banks and are cited throughout the
text as appropriate. Profitably serving the SME segment
requires a tailored customer management approach that will
allow banks to answer these four questions: How can banks
better understand SME customer needs? How can they match
diverse needs with the right offer...

In order to remain relevant in the face of both national and global challenges, the U.S. Navy must recognize that its once useful organizational constructs and business operations that fought the Cold War must be supplanted by significantly more nimble and effective organizations and business models. To realize the Force Transformation vision as outlined by Sea Power 21, the Navy must be vigilant in transforming its business operations. The Navy has devised several business improvement strategies, most notably Sea Enterprise, but has not institutionalized a process to refine and translate these strategies into actionable, measurable business goals. The missing piece, a center of business excellence, would integrate the strategic management of business transformation, unite future business improvement opportunities, provide an operational-level business excellence resource, and aid business initiative implementation throughout the Navy enterprise. The Center for Navy Business Excellence (CNBE) leverages six business transformation enablers throughout the Navy: Business Management Integration, Business Intelligence, Communities of Practice, Corporate Universities, Embedded Human Capital Programs, and Consultants. By incorporating these six enablers...

This paper outlines and evaluates
several intellectual property monetization strategies
available to patent holders in developing countries that
help generate domestic innovation and knowledge-driven
growth by promoting more active technology markets. Based on
a review of World Intellectual Property Report indicators,
the patent ownership gap between a sample of developed and
developing countries has narrowed gradually for more
technologically-sophisticated developing countries. However,
based on complementary International Monetary Fund Balance
of Payments data, the patent commercialization divide (as
indicated by licensing income) has been widening. The paper
argues that patents, and all forms of intellectual property,
are an enabling mechanism rather than a defensive right: an
intangible asset class that can be proactively nurtured and
managed for greater value extraction to stimulate
knowledge-based entrepreneurship and growth in developing
countries. The paper presents multiple case studies of
alternative monetization strategies to address the
commercialization divide. These strategies range from
private...

Mobile money (m-money) refers to the use
of mobile phones to perform financial and banking functions.
However, the technology is far ahead of the infrastructure
of financial and technical network service providers needed
for an m-money system to function. This study was undertaken
to increase the understanding of m-money and to address key
issues in scaling up development of m-money services
globally. It examines the potential demand for m-money,
national regulatory environments, major obstacles, and the
requirements of potential service providers and networks to
run m-money services as viable businesses. Four countries -
Brazil, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Thailand - each of which
represents a different world region, socioeconomic
situation, and financial sector context, were included in
the study. The countries were analyzed in terms of m-money
business models, money flows and demand, potential user
perceptions and behavior, regulations, and agent networks.
In each country, an m-money service provider acted as a
partner institution. To place these four countries in the
wider context of m-money developments...

#Business models of digital color printing companies#Cluster method#Infrastructure investment#Print applications#Print service providers
In 2003, the RIT Printing Industry Center
monograph titled Investing in Digital Color…
the Bottom Line1 identified four different business models that were related to successful digital color print services enterprises. The four models reflected different levels of investment in equipment, telecommunications and networking infrastructures, and human resources. Figure 1 summarizes the four business models in terms of investment strategies and market focus.
The purpose of this research is to validate those four models. The 2003 research was based on a small sample size of print services providers which did not allow us to generalize to a wider population. Are there just four models? Or are there more or fewer? The earlier study described the investment in infrastructure only and did not include other aspects of the businesses in the model profiles. Therefore, a more in-depth study was designed to provide more reliable estimates of the investments for each model and to add business performance measures.; Document #PICRM-2004-06
